'This is a revolution': Saudis absorb crown prince's rush to reform

Consolidation of power in Mohammed bin Salman?s hands has upended all aspects of society, including previously untouchable ultra-elite.
The crown prince has managed to sideline many other princes and take additional powers to himself. The religious police have also had some of their powers stripped from them. He is trying to modernise the country.
This would merely be a backyard spat if oil did not give these events a global significance. If the changes are not accepted by the rank and file life could become very untidy as the entire middle east finds a new equilibrium. Interesting times!

Seriously, there is about to be a massive realignment in the Middle East, in which Russia and China are expected to be major players.

Another step in the downward spiral of "The West" as a world power, unless of course President Trump can forge trade connections free from political interference.

You are looking my friends at the conception of a new world order.

The major destination of Saudi oil is China, who also takes the major part of Iraqi oil exports. The US only imports 10% of Saudi oil.
The game is changing and new players will bring their own influences to bear. China has joint production agreements in Iraq and has had personnel in place for many years jointly producing the Rumaila field near Basra. I have no doubt the chinese will take a very dim view of anyone threatening their future fuel security.

My neighbour (who knows the region well) was talking about this last might. His take on it: the people being purged are those opposed to their country being used for a proxy war with Iran. The messages about "democracy" and "modernization" are all window-dressing fluff for foreign consumption. The country is being dragged deeper into the murderous schemes of the USA.

The USA are involved in this no doubt, Trump was begging the Saudis to float Aramco on the NYSE and they've just taken delivery of a job lot of arms from the states; I'm guessing he's supporting the purge because there's some way he can make a buck out the situation. He registered 8 companies (during the election campaign) in the country with a view to expanding his hotel empire.

Lots of jockying between London and New York for the upcoming sale of Aramco. I wonder how many arms sales this will be worth?
