There used to be something wonderful about the White House Correspondents' Dinner. The President would attend and usually give a speech - and would usually be a good sport about it. Barack Obama always gave a good speech at the dinner, but his last one was a real classic:

But Trump has boycotted the dinner this year and last, and the White House correspondents have had to get by without a good-natured President to entertain them. But still, they go on.
Here's Michelle Wolf's presentation at the 2018 dinner:Some of it is really harsh.

Barack Obama, we miss you.

I absolutely loved Barack Obama Joe. And so did my husband. Lovely man, and his wife too did so much to motivate women and girls to aim high in life.
Oh dear, that Trump is coming here on a visit, but they daren't have him in London as there'd be hundreds of demonstrators chanting abuse. They're considering some more remote estate of the Queen.
Hope they don't bring him to our village. I'll be on the pavement with my placard if so!

Bill Clinton staged some pretty funny behind-the-scenes White House video for his talks at the dinner. I remember one when he was riding a bicycle through the underground corridors. Even folks with a divisive administration like George W. got in on the act. Trump has such thin skin he threw Huckabee under that bus - she really got nailed (and had it coming).

Didn't watch all of that - found it almost as hard to listen to as trump.

Btw: does 'smokey eye' mean something? I gather, in the context, the comedian's use of the term was a way to mock Sarah Huckabee-Sanders looks, but I don't really understand ... ?

Hey Joe I wouldn't want to start a thread about Paul Ryan firing a Catholic Priest for being political in the Capitol Bld. but I wonder if you know what is happening. After all, the priest is one of those social justice Jesuits. A good ol Protestant is waiting in the wings.

https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/the-fix/wp/2018/04/27/why-the-paul-ryan-chaplain-firing-is-very-weird/?utm_term=.73d52b3e89eb

I have heard Capitol Hill Chaplains make prayers far more political than the Priest who made a prayer about the tax bill being decided with the gospel in mind.

Its something Henry the 8th would do but Paul Ryan is getting weirder than his usual weirdness.

Yeah, it's something I find very upsetting and I'd like to start a thread on it, but I don't feel free discussing anything Catholic at Mudcat. Too bad.

Smokey eye is a type of eye makeup involving dark shading.

Trump doesn't go because he can't laugh at himself and provides too much fodder. Most of those guys seem to take themselves far too seriously.

I've heard people say Michelle Wolf went too far. I thought she was funny, with a couple of baddish jokes, and the F-bombs didn't bother me. Comedians and F-bombs: is this somehow unpredictable?

So - was there anything cruel about the 'smokey eye' joke? Was it making fun of Sanders' actual face or her choice in make-up?

I think she just noticed Sarah's makeup, and was making a dig about the (ashes of the) lies.

Thanks - that's a relief. Sanders doesn't deserve to be mocked about her looks - but her lies? Yup!

Miss Piggy as Sarah Huckabee Sanders. Yes, mocking her for her looks is not nice, but she seems to embody the Trump Stink Eye. The Huckabee Gaze is what is being mocked.

Sanders is a normal-looking woman who wears too much eye makeup. Is it bad to make fun of the makeup?
I suppose she's trying hard to look like the stereotypical gorgeous, brainless Republican woman....

Imagine the narcissist Trump doing any self deprecating humor or videos in keeping with the tradition of the correspondents dinner.

Trump: " I am the greatest and only President to give the fake news press a free transportation vacation. Ladies and gentlemen the doors are now being locked and the ICE agents you see will be escorting all of the enemies of the people in the press, except for FOX, to a slow boat to Puerto Rico. Enjoy your surprise vacation."

When the Press turn around they see an actual company of Federal ICE agents marching down the aisle.

"You helped create this monster,
and now you're profiting off of him."

Is that anything but the truth?

Yes there are many more things when it comes to the truth.

Calling fact based news gets befuddled
When real fake news is made
When trust and honor in pros is scuttled
honesty starts to fade

Then like satire, there's fake fake news
That's when truth comes unglued
We still believe our phones and Honolulu nukes
Its enough to make you puke

..............

to call hard science "fake news“
creates suspicion about truth
and hard facts about people
is but a shabby adorning
of the power of money
sweeter than honey
as lobbyists prove
every morning

Yes, k. - the media (most of it) should not be getting bashed for 'fake news' - but they do deserve bashing for helping to create a monster.

Fake News Wets Bed
HEAR YE HEAR YE:
It's a wedding bell for bedding well cause' we're crushin' the illusion of Russian collusion! CNN wets on Russian bedding but Trump bets on Russian wedding, and you're invited to the bridal shower. Punking the monkery, dig the debunkery; from Rasputin to Putin it's time for some straight shootin'. Hillary looks old and glowers at Donald's gold showers. Our nation owes us an explanation for streams of steaming urination, but we are willing to forgive and use their wet diapers as debt wipers. My poem's appeal may take a toll, but let its little peal now roll:

Tinkle, tinkle* rings the bell
A Fake News warning; time to spell
out what was wet with Moscow girls.
Putin's putas but you can
spare me the video of the rich man
who is piss poor

It's true, the media gave President Shitbird way too much oxygen and helped inflict him on the world.

I thought Michelle Wolf was about half-funny at the dinner and I probably would have felt sorry for Sanders if she wasn't such a lying sleaze but Wolf got off a least one good zinger when she said that McConnell couldn't make it because he was having his neck circumcised.

Updating Donuel's post of 29 April,

the Washington Post announces that the chaplain is staying on after all. Somebody persuaded someone else to change their mind.

At the risk of being tedious, I would like to point out
that MSN, which edited this story,
and the Washington Post, which printed it,
both file this story under politics, not under religion.

I think Michelle Wolf was about right for these sad times. I found myself laughing less than five times and lamenting the loss of 'happy' humour, 'good-natured' humour, where we can laugh at ourselves. Not much of that going on.
Michelle Wolf was guest on Terry Gross' 'Fresh Air' the day after and regretted nothing. I don't see why she should. But she didn't rise above the situation, either.
I wonder what Will Rogers would've been able to do.

On the occasion of the White House Correspondents' Dinner both last year and this, I listened to a speech Barack Obama gave at a previous dinner. That cheered me up a bit.

This brings to mind,
Sinsull quoting Robert Graves's "I, Claudius."

The ancient Roman Empire also had writers with big mouths,
and their satires got very petty and mean at the end.
