Real men drink beer or any of the hard stuff but wine oh please except for a dinner maybe but wine cellars or snobby glasses. Only pussies there I said it:-)

A good wine is very hard to beat. The 2016 vintage of Chateauneuf Du Pape is suberb, I can throughly recommend it.

My son's in the wine trade - so I get excellent wines at discount.

No wine snob me - I just enjoy all the varied tastes of the different grapes, countries and their regions and vintages.

Just like I enjoy cheeses from different countries and their regions.

What's the problem? Each to his own.

I tend to drink beer because it suits me - wine has a higher alcohol content, so with beer you get to drink more per unit. Nothing to do with being a man.

Correct. It has a dehydrating effect.
There is also a slight dehydrating effect to most wines (10% abv above)

To slake your thirst requires something with a lower abv. Beer, Cider, Lager, etc.

I don't like paying more than five quid for wine, so it generally means I'm on the hunt for special offers or 25% off six. Sometimes I can indulge in creative accounting allowing me to include a more expensive bottle or two in my six, as long as the overall total doesn't exceed thirty quid. I can include my five-quid Morrisons vouchers in these nefarious fiscal practices. Currently, Viña Sol is two for ten quid at Morrisons and a fiver a bottle at Asda, very quaffable without being exactly brilliant. Waitrose have a white South African wine (oops!) called Whale Caller that is pleasant, and their Rich And Intense Italian red is very good at that price. Lidl Peuceta Primitivo is a brilliant bargain at £4.99. The best catch at the moment, if you can ever find it, is Asda Wine Atlas Negroamaro 2016 at £5.68. It would be a beauty even at ten quid, I tell you. And, to finish, I can tell you that sometimes you really DO have to be a real man to drink cheap wine...

As far as I know sulphites are present in almost all wine, including organic, whether artificially added or not. I doubt whether I could have made my home-brew wines without the use of Campden tablets. The amounts used won't do you any harm unless you're that rare breed who is prone to sulphite-induced asthma, and the sulphur dioxide largely dissipates once the wine is open and poured. The US has far more lax upper limits on sulphites than the EU. There is no established link between sulphites in wine and headaches.

My poor husband is gagging for even a drink of water. It's 7.30pm here, and he must wait until 9.08pm (Iftar) before he can have anything cross his lips. He's been at work too for six hours. I don't know how he does it.

I think this could be seen from the other side. There used to be drinks which 'ladies' would not be seen dead quaffing. When I was younger (dim and distant past) I liked a pint of Guinness or bitter ale. It would last me all evening, and I had no time for those silly little poncy glasses with a paper umbrella and a cherry stuck in them, or a bit of Mother's Ruin with half a ton of ice cubes.

However, I used to smile at my companion-of-the-evening's face when I piped up with "A pint of Adnam's please!" Maybe that's why I didn't have many boyfriends!

Interestingly enough, some of the best "Chilean" wine is actually made in Mendoza Agentina (been there) where it is barrelled and shipped by road over the Andes into Chile where it is bottled. So don't always believe the label on the bottle!!!

Mendoza is very close to the border with Chile, albeit at an altitude of some 3,000 meters plus. We were stopped from reaching the border by unexpected heavy snowfall, so repaired to a very touristy eating place by the Puente del Inca. It was absolutely freezing and I was in shorts!
