Subject: RE: BS: Real men don’t drink wine From: Will Fly Date: 31 May 18 - 03:27 PM My son's in the wine trade - so I get excellent wines at discount. No wine snob me - I just enjoy all the varied tastes of the different grapes, countries and their regions and vintages. Just like I enjoy cheeses from different countries and their regions. What's the problem? Each to his own. |
Subject: RE: BS: Real men don’t drink wine From: robomatic Date: 31 May 18 - 04:07 PM Can I respond "bollocks" from this side of the pond? Regarding real men and wine. And I used to agree with that prejudice about real men and quiche, till I tried some real good quiche and learned how to spelitt. |

Subject: RE: BS: Real men don’t drink wine From: McGrath of Harlow Date: 31 May 18 - 06:48 PM I tend to drink beer because it suits me - wine has a higher alcohol content, so with beer you get to drink more per unit. Nothing to do with being a man. |
Subject: RE: BS: Real men don’t drink wine From: olddude Date: 31 May 18 - 07:24 PM Lol see I woke you up now excuse me but no wine can compare to a great single malt |

Subject: RE: BS: Real men don’t drink wine From: SPB-Cooperator Date: 01 Jun 18 - 04:05 AM And not to mention the bottle of Amarone della Valpolicella I got as a present from my partner from the vineyard we visited (retails over £50 a bottle in UK, cost 20 Euros in Italy). |
Subject: RE: BS: Real men don’t drink wine From: Nigel Parsons Date: 01 Jun 18 - 04:32 AM Whisky is no use if you're thirsty. Correct. It has a dehydrating effect. There is also a slight dehydrating effect to most wines (10% abv above) To slake your thirst requires something with a lower abv. Beer, Cider, Lager, etc. Or maybe water . . . |
Subject: RE: BS: Real men don’t drink wine From: Steve Shaw Date: 01 Jun 18 - 05:45 AM I don't like paying more than five quid for wine, so it generally means I'm on the hunt for special offers or 25% off six. Sometimes I can indulge in creative accounting allowing me to include a more expensive bottle or two in my six, as long as the overall total doesn't exceed thirty quid. I can include my five-quid Morrisons vouchers in these nefarious fiscal practices. Currently, Viña Sol is two for ten quid at Morrisons and a fiver a bottle at Asda, very quaffable without being exactly brilliant. Waitrose have a white South African wine (oops!) called Whale Caller that is pleasant, and their Rich And Intense Italian red is very good at that price. Lidl Peuceta Primitivo is a brilliant bargain at £4.99. The best catch at the moment, if you can ever find it, is Asda Wine Atlas Negroamaro 2016 at £5.68. It would be a beauty even at ten quid, I tell you. And, to finish, I can tell you that sometimes you really DO have to be a real man to drink cheap wine... |
Subject: RE: BS: Real men don’t drink wine From: Steve Shaw Date: 01 Jun 18 - 05:46 AM Those Waitrose wines are both £4.99. |
Subject: RE: BS: Real men don’t drink wine From: Donuel Date: 01 Jun 18 - 07:17 AM If the bottle says SULFITES I don't try it |
Subject: RE: BS: Real men don’t drink wine From: Steve Shaw Date: 01 Jun 18 - 08:54 AM As far as I know sulphites are present in almost all wine, including organic, whether artificially added or not. I doubt whether I could have made my home-brew wines without the use of Campden tablets. The amounts used won't do you any harm unless you're that rare breed who is prone to sulphite-induced asthma, and the sulphur dioxide largely dissipates once the wine is open and poured. The US has far more lax upper limits on sulphites than the EU. There is no established link between sulphites in wine and headaches. |

Subject: RE: BS: Real men don’t drink wine From: Newport Boy Date: 01 Jun 18 - 12:58 PM Whisky is no use if you're thirsty. To slake your thirst requires something with a lower abv. Beer, Cider, Lager, etc. Or maybe water . . . My father used to recite: Pure water is the finest drink That man to man may bring, But who am I, that I should have The best of everything? Let prelates revel at the pump, Peers at the pond make free, But whisky, wine or even beer Is good enough for me! I've lived by that for the past 60 years. Phil |
Subject: RE: BS: Real men don’t drink wine From: Raggytash Date: 01 Jun 18 - 01:08 PM I read in a pub in Preston many years ago Oh Jesus Christ, oh lord divine who turned the water into wine Oh God forgive those foolish men who try to turn it back again |

Subject: RE: BS: Real men don’t drink wine From: Senoufou Date: 01 Jun 18 - 02:30 PM My poor husband is gagging for even a drink of water. Subject: RE: BS: Real men don’t drink wine From: ChanteyLass Date: 01 Jun 18 - 09:27 PM Senoufou, that proves it! Your husband is a real man! (But I'm sure you already knew that!) |
Subject: RE: BS: Real men don’t drink wine From: olddude Date: 02 Jun 18 - 12:11 AM Chanty exactly see I am right Now no real man drinks the wine with the little bubbles in it. That’s against all man laws even with a jelly jar |
Subject: RE: BS: Real men don’t drink wine From: Senoufou Date: 02 Jun 18 - 03:10 AM I think this could be seen from the other side. There used to be drinks which 'ladies' would not be seen dead quaffing. When I was younger (dim and distant past) I liked a pint of Guinness or bitter ale. It would last me all evening, and I had no time for those silly little poncy glasses with a paper umbrella and a cherry stuck in them, or a bit of Mother's Ruin with half a ton of ice cubes. However, I used to smile at my companion-of-the-evening's face when I piped up with "A pint of Adnam's please!" Maybe that's why I didn't have many boyfriends! |

Subject: RE: BS: Real men don’t drink wine From: Bonzo3legs Date: 03 Jun 18 - 08:13 AM Interestingly enough, some of the best "Chilean" wine is actually made in Mendoza Agentina (been there) where it is barrelled and shipped by road over the Andes into Chile where it is bottled. So don't always believe the label on the bottle!!! |
Subject: RE: BS: Real men don’t drink wine From: Rapparee Date: 03 Jun 18 - 04:14 PM Interesting theory. I'll tell the Berserkers. |
Subject: RE: BS: Real men don’t drink wine From: Bonzo3legs Date: 03 Jun 18 - 05:51 PM Mendoza is very close to the border with Chile, albeit at an altitude of some 3,000 meters plus. We were stopped from reaching the border by unexpected heavy snowfall, so repaired to a very touristy eating place by the Puente del Inca. It was absolutely freezing and I was in shorts! |
