This is the suicide prevention # in the US

Every minute there 2 attempts and suicide death is the tenth leading cause of death.


I spent over a year working at the call center in NY and I profess it was a wonderful group.


We don't talk about this much but a brain can enter a common medical emergency that can be treated immediately. Relying on social media is a big mistake.

My dad used to tell a story that served as a vaccine against suicide but today there are far more advanced treatments.

The word to describe the absence of all discussion about a subject is stigma. The greater the stigma the less communication there is which is why I expect there will be none

I worked a suicide and OD hotline in my late teens. The connection is real. Unlike face conversations, the caller doesn't have to deal with well-meaning friends and family whose urgency and ignorance make it much worse. That kind of real listening reminds me, when I feel so alone in hard times now, not to settle for just talking to someone. I want the real deal-- and nothing but. I've learned how to talk myself down (and who to call when I can't).

And for folks who don't feel like they want to name their feeling directly, even on the phone, rape/DV hotlines are also great 24/7 on venting that SO ALONE feeling, and making a healthy plan (Like when my #MeToo experiences are triggered beyond my coping skills.)

Because in those moments, with only the wrong people around you-- you actually ARE alone, when you've made a healthy decision to withdraw from toxicity. Until you reach out to real listening, which is exactly the opposite of urgency.

I have a dear friend who has served for many years as a Samaritan. She does three hours every week at the centre, either answering the telephone or welcoming visitors who turn up personally for help.

She also does a night duty every six weeks, and actually set up a Samaritans charity shop from scratch before handing it over to volunteer shop staff.

It's very sad to view the statistics of numbers of callers nowadays. Despair seems to be rampant, and especially among the young.
(My friend never tells me any details about callers; the service is strictly confidential)

There are about 200 volunteers at the centre in Norwich, and they're as busy as anything.

Their UK number is 116123, and calls are free.

That's the national number, so one can call from anywhere in UK and be connected immediately.
There are also Samaritans (called 'Listeners') in UK prisons. They're recruited from among the inmates, who are given special training. They too are very busy - there's a lot of despair among the prisoners. The Prison Chaplain also visits inmates in their cells if they need support for their problems.

You can't 'make' someone saner. At least I can't. You sound like someone telling a sick person to 'be well'. I had a friend in marriage difficulties whose method of coping was to smoke unfiltered Camels and who said between drags: "If I hear one more person tell me to 'hang in there' I'm gonna tear his lungs out!"

The story that works for me and that I do tell people is the true one about the young man who jumped off the Golden Gate Bridge and almost immediately, he says, "I realized that all of my problems were fixable... All but one. That I'd just jumped off the Golden Gate Bridge!"

I've listened to Bobby Gentry a thousand times, and I just can't imagine what she and Billy Joe were 'throwing off the Talahatchi Bridge'. Any suggestions?
And why did Billy Joe throw himself into the river? Unrequited love?

That crossed my mind too Nigel. But the lassie was 'out chopping cotton', which would perhaps be rather exhausting if she'd just given birth/had an abortion.

They say that Bobby Gentry has been asked about the reason for the suicide of Billy Joe, and she didn't have any answer. She said she wrote the song off the top of her head and couldn't give us the story behind it.
I do like to get to the bottom of things. Very frustrating not to know!

That's true Nigel. But when 'the nice young preacher' said he saw a girl that looked a lot like her up on Choctaw Ridge, I assumed he meant fairly recently. Of course, he could have seen them months ago, you're right.
One can tell I'm rather over-invested in the song!

Interesting story about the original phone for The Samaritans: Taken from Here
"out of the blue, I got a wire inviting me to apply for St Stephen Walbrook, in the heart of the City of London. Interviewed by the Patrons, the Worshipful Company of Grocers, I told them of my crazy scheme. The decision of these successful men to appoint me, because they thought it was worth a try, gave me immense confidence.
All I had to do was stand drinks to my pals in Fleet Street to get all the publicity necessary if the idea was to work. The telephone number of the church turned out to be the one I'd planned to ask for, MAN 9000."

I remembered reading a version of this story in a very old Readers Digest, so was able to look it up online.

Same these days in fairly remote African villages wysiwyg. Not so much in the cities though (thank goodness) but the women who cultivate crops have a couple of days rest then carry on as usual, poor souls.

Those enslaved were often not given so much as half a day--that was my point. What Africans choose to do in their own struggle with the environment has nothing to do with what was possible with force imposed by US slaveholders.

It actually has me wondering if Ole Billy Joe fathered himself a little Black baby with a white girlfriend.
