Subject: RE: BS: Oxymorons From: Nigel Parsons Date: 10 Jun 18 - 04:27 AM Rap, I don't agree about "bottomless hole" being an oxymoron. Although holes dug in the earth will normally have a bottom, other holes may go straight through to the other side of something. That makes it tautology rather than an oxymoron. But, to add to the list: Rap music (not> aimed at the aforementioned poster) Yes, I know that 'rap' usually has a backing track, but it tends to be the words, spoken in a monotone, which are being described by the term. Subject: RE: BS: Oxymorons From: DMcG Date: 10 Jun 18 - 04:55 AM While "compulsory options" may sometimes be an oxymoron, it need not be. Imagine you are buying a car and have to option of it being black, white, red or blue. The option is real, but picking one of the colours is compulsory. |

Subject: RE: BS: Oxymorons From: DMcG Date: 10 Jun 18 - 06:32 AM Having checked a couple of definitions, it seems one key factor is whether the terms are 'apparently' contradictory. This is a bit of a problem because it makes the oxymoronness in the eye of the beholder. So if you think of 'choice' as take it or leave it you get one answer, but if you think of it as 'select from alternatives' you get another. |
