Subject: BS: Credit Card expiry month is a lie

due to a catalogue of unfortunate mishaps (postal, festivals etc) my credit card expired with no replacement actually arriving. Yet.

1) the expiry declared on the card it 8/18 - 2) the card became blocked yesterday 2018/08/29

Clearly they have chosen to simplify their software to only count days numbered 1 to 28 because of February. But when did they warn me of this? Given that their system knows I haven't registered a new card - it is not beyond the wit of a whole department to figure such software to send an automated secure message. It is on the cards I would be logging-in to their website to look for clues/messages and tell them to sort out the new card. AND while I was chatting to them could they not remind me? That would keep their software simple.

Yea Yea why don't I tell them?

1) there is a time-out that logs you out if no activity for a while. Writing a secure (considered and polite) message is clearly not considered activity! - 2) Perhaps I should have vent my spleen without consideration.

The credit card is called Smile.

Not right now I ain't.   :(

How infuriating Mr Red. Will this affect your credit rating in any way?
(Having a card blocked)
They shouldn't be called 'Smile'.
I suggest 'Fume'.

Won't affect credit rating, the card just expired, but not on the 1st September, on the 29th of August. Once the card was refused I connected why immediately. Before, I imagined I had a couple of days to go.

I posted more as a warning for peeps who might find themselve in similar circumstances. WHo knows what other credit card companies do?

I've had cards declined a month before expiry. I don't believe it was the bank declining them but the company I was trying to buy from.

If you want to write a considered and polite complaint, write it first in your word processor, then paste it in. (If it won't past in in full, send a series, ended with (continued) on each one till the last.

Yea that was the plan - I hadn't considered the (continued) wheeze and it may be more effective to keep it to their limit. Punchy.

New card arrived today.

Now I can get on with changing the auto-payment details on my two web service providers. And other immediate payments like the tickets for Blowzabella Eurobal.

I was on the edge of my seat there.

One of the sneakiest little computer bugs I was involved in tracking down - I did not originate it, honest! - concerned dates on a web page. JavaScript numbers months from 0 whereas ASP.NET numbers them from 1. So the function "tomorrow's date" (eg 27->28) worked for most days in most months, but went wrong at the end (eg June 30's tomorrow is 1, whereas July's is 31). But - since it was a Monday-to-Friday system - many months it went unnoticed. And, if people didn't get round to checking it for a day or two, we were in the next month and everything worked fine ...
