Subject: BS: 2019 Kentucky Derby From: keberoxu Date: 05 May 19 - 05:27 PM What the heck was all THAT about? A racehorse, in full gallop, messing about with other racehorses ?! Is that unusual, or do I just need to get out more? |
Subject: RE: BS: 2019 Kentucky Derby From: wysiwyg Date: 05 May 19 - 06:12 PM Notv at all. The Derby particularly recruits very young stock just getting used to racing, and most of them are unGELDed stallions stallions who smell enemy stallions all around them... Or mares to fight for. In this case, the horse startled at the noise, veered away from it, and swung into the path of others coming on strong for the finish. His jockey-- those peeps are STRONG-- expertly brought him about his spot, but he other jockeys were lucky they didn't all pile into each others' heels. It could have killed people and horses. |
Subject: RE: BS: 2019 Kentucky Derby From: wysiwyg Date: 05 May 19 - 06:17 PM ....oh and they bump quite often, but more usually shoulder-to-shoulder as they strive for position. |
Subject: RE: BS: 2019 Kentucky Derby From: Steve Shaw Date: 05 May 19 - 08:00 PM But the word is pronounced DARBY, yanks... ;-) |
Subject: RE: BS: 2019 Kentucky Derby From: Jos Date: 06 May 19 - 04:27 AM Well, the Epsom Derby (and the town in Derbyshire) are pronounced 'Darby', but the Kentucky Derby is pronounced 'Durby'. Just as Berkeley Castle in Gloucestershire is pronounced 'Barkley', but the similarly named place in California is pronounced 'Burkley' - whether you like it or not, that is how the people in California and Kentucky pronounce them. However, I do have a problem with Americans pronouncing the plural of 'process' as 'prossesees' as if it was the plural of 'procesis' (and pronouncing 'diplomat' as 'dipplemat' - which is just peculiar). |
Subject: RE: BS: 2019 Kentucky Derby From: Steve Shaw Date: 06 May 19 - 06:49 AM Or Dubya with his nucular or Delia Smith with her basalmic vinegar... it's an interesting phenomena...yes, the use of English is deteriating... |
Subject: RE: BS: 2019 Kentucky Derby From: Donuel Date: 06 May 19 - 06:59 AM The DQ horse's reins pulled the entire head in the direction the jockey wanted the horse to go. It was intentional blocking over 3 lanes by the jockey. This could have had fatal results. The horse cut off at the rail should have been deemed the winner but the deemed winner won by not being part of the collision. |

Subject: RE: BS: 2019 Kentucky Derby From: keberoxu Date: 06 May 19 - 06:56 PM The Washington Post, to which I can rarely link successfully, writes of "unsung heroes" in the persons of the jockeys on the OTHER horses who responded quickly to avoid injury or worse. That makes sense to me if nothing else does. |
Subject: RE: BS: 2019 Kentucky Derby From: wysiwyg Date: 07 May 19 - 06:12 PM I watched closely for jockey steering and did not see any except as I described. I did see a lot of clever rein work by riders affected, but seeing any is owed to the close coverage of the race because of its prestige.... Jockeys ride cleverly in EVERY race. Horses have their tricks. My former racing mare used to toss me every time we galloped. She'd drop one shoulder mid-stride at the same time she threw her hips the opposite direction, and spiraling I'd go. To break that habit I held her in close check and permitted only very fast trotting. Those concussions were pretty bad, so I thought I was saving my life. I never knew until forced to sell her that she'd been sold to me with a cracked bone.... My treatment saved HER life just as much. Just before I sold her I let her out at full gallop across a grassy ridge, thinking if I went off I'd at least have soft landing. O m g was she fast. I'd had no idea. Smooth as glass. Apparently that footing suited her well, because she wasn't in pain. Power? Speed? Nothing like it. Bless those jockeys for sitting that and channeling that! And thank you, dear Emanon, for the ride of a kifetime-- and for giving me those muscles from your very bumpy trot! . (If you read about the vet caught up in the Brach case, you'll know how I got a "re-papered" mare with apparently clear x-rays, and could not have known I was causing her pain for all the joy she gave me.) |
Subject: RE: BS: 2019 Kentucky Derby From: Murray MacLeod Date: 09 May 19 - 04:56 PM I never had you pegged as an equine enthusiast, Susan. Racehorses have always been a passion of mine ... I worked for two years in the stable of probably the most eminent trainer in the UK ... happiest two years of my life. |
Subject: RE: BS: 2019 Kentucky Derby From: keberoxu Date: 09 May 19 - 06:19 PM The horse that crossed the finish line first at the Derby, and was disqualified, will not be in the Preakness as the horse is still being treated for cuts on his hind legs. |

Subject: RE: BS: 2019 Kentucky Derby From: Bonzo3legs Date: 11 May 19 - 05:50 AM I wonder if Sandy Denny was referring to this race in I'm a Dreamer - oddly enough I prefer Richard & Linda Thompson's version!! I put a bet on with a bookie For the race they put on over in Kentucky. It's lovely at this time of year, so they say, And I've got to get away. |
Subject: RE: BS: 2019 Kentucky Derby From: Mrrzy Date: 12 May 19 - 11:44 AM New video says my #1 bumped him first, but the Stewards say not subject to review. |
Subject: RE: BS: 2019 Kentucky Derby From: keberoxu Date: 13 May 19 - 05:34 PM The jockey has been suspended. |
Subject: RE: BS: 2019 Kentucky Derby From: Donuel Date: 13 May 19 - 08:50 PM My jockey shorts has suspenders. Where will they suspend the jockey? |
