Volunteering with seniors. The only occurrence of this song is another lyric "to the tune of ... " Also, In addition to credits --I'm pretty sure I know the chords-- I always like to know the year, if possible. All of us, but especially some seniors, remember best the songs from our teens and twenty-somethings. OOOOOPs just noticed the forum thread WHY ISN't the very complete data in the DigiTrad? No complaints here :) I LOVE this group & this site & Max :)

Cheers Dennis in Manitoba

This is another "MudCat" scoop…..an hour search of the web could not find the lyrics anywhere…..(a song "everyone" knows - but doesn't know?) A five minute search found them in the WWI sheet music stack. When You Wore a Tulip and I Wore Big Red Rose

Words by Jack Mahony
Music by Percy Wenrich
Published Leo Feist, New York 1914
2/4 time (tempo di marcia (Not too fast)
Advertised on cover as "Dolly Connoll's Big Hit"

I met you in a gar-den in an old Ken-tuck-y town,
The sun was shin-ing dow, you wore a ging-ham gown,
I kissed you, as I placed a yel-low tul-ip in your hair,
Up-on my coar you pinned a rose so rare. -
Time has no hcange your lov-li-ness, you're just as sweet to me,
I love you yet, I con't for-get the days that used to be.

CHORUS
When you wore a tul-lip, a sweet yel-low tul-ip, and I wore a big red rose,
When you ca-ressed me, 'twas then Heav-en blessed me, what bles-sing, no-one knows.
You made life cheer-ie, when you called me dear-ie, 'twas down where the blue grass grows.
Your lips were sweet-er than jul-ep, when you wore that tul-ip and I wore a big red rose.

The love you vowed to cher-ish has not fal-tered thro' the years,
You banish all my fears, your voice like music cheers,
You are the same sweet girl I knew in the hap-py days of old,
Your hair is sil-ver, but your heart is gold. -
Red ros-es blush no long-er in your cheeks so sweet and fair,
It seems to me, dear, I can see white roses blooming there.

Have FUN!!!

or even
I wore a tunic,
A dirty kharki tunic,
And you wore civilian clothes.
We fought and died at Loos,
When you were on the booze,
The booze that no one here knows.

Oh, you were with the wenches ,
While we were in the trenches,
Facing our German foe.
Oh you were a-slacking,
While we were attacking,
Down on the Menin Road.
Vintage WW1 song about those that dodged military service.

Or

You wore a tulip, a big yellow tulip And I wore a big red rose The green house was burning and our house was burning And there was no time for clothes Next day the jurry condemned us with fury For being so exposed I said Judge, quit your stalling, the petals are falling From his tulip and my red rose
