Subject: Short Break in Whitby From: SPB-Cooperator Date: 30 Jun 19 - 04:47 AM In September my better half and I will be visiting Whitby for 4 nights. (Monday - Thursday). (1) Are there any folk clubs/sessions we can go to? (2) Is Anderson's Bistro still open? (3) Any other recommended places to eat? Thanks Steve & Hanka |
Subject: RE: Short Break in Whitby From: Raggytash Date: 30 Jun 19 - 05:06 AM There are numerous sessions in Whitby, the pick of which (in my mind) is the Tuesday night session in the Elsinore. There is a small group of "regulars" enhanced by whoever walks in the door. That could be a "national" name on the folk scene or a trawler skipper from Cornwall. As I don't live there very much in recent times I can't help you with other nights as they seem to flit from one place to another. |
Subject: RE: Short Break in Whitby From: Johnny J Date: 30 Jun 19 - 05:20 AM Yes, something to do most days in Whitby. The Elsinore session is excellent. |
Subject: RE: Short Break in Whitby From: GUEST Date: 30 Jun 19 - 05:37 AM September is a better time than at festival time, when it's noisy, expensive and very crowded |
Subject: RE: Short Break in Whitby From: Raggytash Date: 30 Jun 19 - 05:40 AM It will still be noisy, expensive and very crowded in September!! |
Subject: RE: Short Break in Whitby From: Johnny J Date: 30 Jun 19 - 05:59 AM I was there during the "mini heat wave" in early October last year. There was still quite a buzz abut the palce but it was manageable. There was a good session in The Fleece on Wednesday too. |
Subject: RE: Short Break in Whitby From: cujimmy Date: 01 Jul 19 - 12:56 PM The Folk Club is on Thursday Evening I believe at the Fishermens Rowing Club. |
Subject: RE: Short Break in Whitby From: The Sandman Date: 01 Jul 19 - 12:58 PM yes contxt mick haywood for folk club,i think it is on facebook |
Subject: RE: Short Break in Whitby From: nutty Date: 01 Jul 19 - 03:20 PM Robin Hood's Bay Folk Club is on a Friday |
Subject: RE: Short Break in Whitby From: The Sandman Date: 01 Jul 19 - 05:03 PM steve is not there on a friday |
Subject: RE: Short Break in Whitby From: SPB-Cooperator Date: 02 Jul 19 - 04:40 AM So plenty of folk then... dates 23-26 September. Head back on 27 with possible stopover Friday night in Norwich. We just need to plan eating.... with one night in a nice restaurant. |
Subject: RE: Short Break in Whitby From: GUEST,SPB - problem resetting cookie Date: 04 Jul 19 - 06:42 AM I just found out that Anderson's Bistro closed down five years ago :( :( Now need to find somewhere else where we can go to celebrate our combined 115th birthday (my 60th and her 55th). |
Subject: RE: Short Break in Whitby From: Dave the Gnome Date: 04 Jul 19 - 08:26 AM We found Moutreys Italian on Grape Lane really good last time we were there. We had 2 x vegans with us and the restaurant was very accommodating. As well as serving excellent food! |
Subject: RE: Short Break in Whitby From: SPB-Cooperator Date: 29 Jul 19 - 08:55 AM A postscript to this - we will be stopping over in Norwich for two nights 27th and 28th (Sep), so the same questions as in my original post: with the exception, of course, of the question about Andersons. |
Subject: RE: Short Break in Whitby From: GUEST Date: 29 Jul 19 - 10:00 AM As you rightly say Andersons did close quite a while ago but has, in the recent past, been taken over and now operates under the name of Rusty Shears ..... well worth a visit, the food is excellent. |
Subject: RE: Short Break in Whitby From: JP2 Date: 29 Jul 19 - 02:05 PM Ah,Rusty Shears is,I believe, about to change hands. I would second Moutreys and counsel against the one whose shall not be spoken but is in what used to be the Tourist Office. Mr Chips/Sarah's,although basically Fish'n Chips, does have a very interesting Specials Board. On Skinner Street there is Mademoiselle's and Ditto, never been to the former and I'll let other people comment on the latter! JP2,Whitby Part-timer. |
Subject: RE: Short Break in Whitby From: GUEST,christopher hampton Date: 29 Jul 19 - 02:07 PM Sergey Yatsko Ochi Chornye happy share it - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HWB6oIO8p6k |
Subject: RE: Short Break in Whitby From: SPB-Cooperator Date: 31 Jul 19 - 01:46 PM I googled Moutreys and the search came up with a food hygiene warning. |
Subject: RE: Short Break in Whitby From: GUEST,Malcolm Storey Date: 01 Aug 19 - 08:42 PM I would not normally recommend places to eat as they can vary depending on the night and whoever is in charge. However I and the royal we have been dining at the Saxonville, which is a family run hotel, for many years now and have never been disappointed. |
Subject: RE: Short Break in Whitby From: SPB-Cooperator Date: 03 Aug 19 - 04:43 PM Is that whitby or Norwich? |
Subject: RE: Short Break in Whitby From: Raggytash Date: 03 Aug 19 - 05:20 PM Whitby me old love. |
Subject: RE: Short Break in Whitby From: FreddyHeadey Date: 03 Aug 19 - 06:58 PM ^^^ Norwich ... idk but there is a 'Norfolk' thread with some links thread.cfm?threadid=159605#4000632 |
Subject: RE: Short Break in Whitby From: GUEST,Malcolm Storey Date: 03 Aug 19 - 08:13 PM I responded to the subject - silly me. But really can recommend the Saxonville. |
Subject: RE: Short Break in Whitby From: SPB-Cooperator Date: 04 Aug 19 - 05:42 AM Malcolm, I added Norwich to my query on 29th July. Maybe Ishould have started a 2nd thread :) :) |
Subject: RE: Short Break in Whitby From: Dave the Gnome Date: 04 Aug 19 - 05:54 AM Just back from a lovely week in Whitby with the grandkids. Couple of food places impressed me. For snacks the "Yapas" at the Black Horse are very good. The other is Hadleys restaurant. The fish and chips are excellent, as is the rest of the food. It was the service that was particularly brilliant though. We had a vegetarian with us who asked if they did chips in oil rather than dripping. They didn't but they did tell us that the takeaway across the road, Robertsons, did. They were happy for our veggie member to get their chips from the takeaway and eat them in their restaurant. Even providing a plate and cutlery! Not many would do that. |
Subject: RE: Short Break in Whitby From: SPB-Cooperator Date: 04 Aug 19 - 08:37 AM I remember a decade or two back a 'chippie' that had takeaway fillet steak, and a very cheap and cheerful pizza restaurant resplendent with plastic tablecloths. |
Subject: RE: Short Break in Whitby From: SPB-Cooperator Date: 04 Aug 19 - 08:46 AM More or less planned our itinerary - one day footpath to Robin Hood's bay and bus back, assuming the coastal path hasn't eroded away. There is always the old railway track but the views are less spectacular - probably not up to the circular walk Whitby to Ravenscar - South Cheek and back again. Another will be a drive and picnic along the Esk Valley - assuming that there will be no devastating floods before we arrive and the third day either NYM Railway or Walk to Sandsend. |
Subject: RE: Short Break in Whitby From: Dave the Gnome Date: 04 Aug 19 - 12:57 PM Coastal path was fine as far as Saltwick Nab on Friday. Didn't go much further due to grandson complaints :-) Last time we walked to Robin Hoods Bay and bussed back we bumped into a certain Mr Carthy at the bus stop on his way to Sainsburys and singing quietly most of the way! If you get to Sandsend our daughters have recommended Mulgrave Castle ruins. They are privately owned and only open Wednesdays and weekends though. |
Subject: RE: Short Break in Whitby From: Jon Freeman Date: 04 Aug 19 - 02:23 PM Norwich Folk Club would probably do your Friday I'm too far out of touch (if I ever was in touch..., and would usually favour Irish tune orientated things, none of which I'm aware of on those dates if I was headed that way) to have other suggestions. |
Subject: RE: Short Break in Whitby From: SPB-Cooperator Date: 19 Sep 19 - 09:40 AM Hello all, Time has passed very quickly, and we are only 4 days away from our holiday. Any last minute food and entertainment recommendations for Whitby Mon-Thu and Norwich Fri, Sat? |
Subject: RE: Short Break in Whitby From: Steve Gardham Date: 19 Sep 19 - 09:50 AM Fisherman's Wife on the Khyber has just featured in the country's top 10 sea food eateries in one of the Nationals. Wonderful views. Magpie on harbour front is always too crowded and claustrophobic for me but there are always long queues outside. A Little pricy, but I always have a good experience in Trenchers near the station and you can't fault the food. The crab salad is superb and the poached haddock.....ahhhhhhhh! |
Subject: RE: Short Break in Whitby From: Mo the caller Date: 19 Sep 19 - 12:08 PM Back in the 80s some of our friends used to eat at Trenchers in folk week. We preferred a chippie for quick service (too much on in Folk Week to sit around waiting for food) |
Subject: RE: Short Break in Whitby From: Dave the Gnome Date: 19 Sep 19 - 12:52 PM Mademoiselles on Skinner Street has just won something or was featured in some list. I have not been though so I can't say what it is like. Looks nice from the outside. |
Subject: RE: Short Break in Whitby From: GUEST,Clive Pownceby Date: 19 Sep 19 - 02:54 PM During Folk Week we always make a point of having at least one meal at Harry's on the quay - midway between the fortune teller's hut and the Magpie/Amusement arcades. It's a classy bar downstairs (well to my mind at any rate - I'm a smalltown boy) and a quieter dining space upstairs. Always welcoming and quite cosy in its own way. They also do small plates if you're not ravenous. Wine list is good. |
Subject: RE: Short Break in Whitby From: John MacKenzie Date: 19 Sep 19 - 03:21 PM The Humble Pie and Mash shop for me. |
Subject: RE: Short Break in Whitby From: Herga Kitty Date: 22 Sep 19 - 04:30 AM I like fish but not batter, which is why we go to restaurants that offer poached fish as well as fried - including the Fisherman's Wife and Mr Chips! Kitty |
Subject: RE: Short Break in Whitby From: SPB-Cooperator Date: 22 Sep 19 - 05:32 AM We are having grilled salmon and buttery new potatoes today, dispensing with the cleaning up after a Sunday roast with all the trimmings. |
Subject: RE: Short Break in Whitby From: SPB-Cooperator Date: 22 Sep 19 - 06:09 AM Less than 20 hours before we hit the road - any recommendations for cheap and cheerful transport cafes in or around Biggleswade area where we can stop for breakfast? |
Subject: RE: Short Break in Whitby From: SPB-Cooperator Date: 01 Oct 19 - 05:26 AM Back from our travels. We went to Moutreys. Didn't really rise to our expectations - seating to cramped up on the Mezzanine and not that much variety of meat dishes, and service could have been better - but not in the same league as Andersons was. |
Subject: RE: Short Break in Whitby From: Noreen Date: 03 Oct 19 - 05:57 PM And that's the only comment you have to make about your short break in wondrous Whitby?? |
Subject: RE: Short Break in Whitby From: SPB-Cooperator Date: 06 Oct 19 - 08:51 AM Found the pie and mash shop an interesting experience, great music, got beaten back by the rain attepting to walk to Robin Hood Bay, but did an early morning stopover on the way back south. Esk Valley andthe Moores as lovely as ever. Enjoyed the train journey Grosmont to Goathland and the walk back. Interesting shops, great fish and chips, and a nice meal in the pub at the top end of Skinner Street. Nice evening walk along the West Cliff Top. |
Subject: RE: Short Break in Whitby From: GUEST Date: 06 Oct 19 - 08:57 AM Less than 10 months and we'll be back at folk week again wondering how to fit in everything. |
Subject: RE: Short Break in Whitby From: Raggytash Date: 06 Oct 19 - 12:52 PM In Moutreys defence SPB, it is basically a Pizza restaurant! |
