Sorry USers. I am sure you can find it online if required.

Supermarket chain Tesco have released an ad where a father prepares a vegan sausage casserole for his daughter who no longer wants to eat animal products. Innocent enough you would think. Oh no. Tesco are now seemingly he devil incarnate. Don't get me wrong here. I am not a fan of Tesco. Nor am I a vegan, or even a vegetarian. But why on earth have people kicked off about this advert?

There are very good reasons to reduce our meat consumption. Both ecologically and for our health. This advert is obviously geared at a certain market, which will help to achieve this. So why are Tesco being accused of being anything from being meat-free Nazis to ruining the farming economy?

I despair of people at times.

No idea why people are responding negatively, that casserole looks pretty tasty. I started using a tofu andouille sausage in my Red Beans and Rice and Gumbo dishes long ago and would never go back.

Gilly's link seems to be mutable in the YouTube world. My first try was to a delightful demonstration of how to make an easy chicken tikka masala. I closed that window and tried again and saw the ad in question. That Tesco recipe looks good to me.

A sausage has got meat in in it. So do not call something with no meat in it a sausage. It's bad enough that you make it look like a sausage without you adding insult ro injury by calling it a sausage. Do your own misguided thing, eat what you like, but do not call a non-sausage a sausage. And I know not what tofu is and I never will.

There are a number of reasons why people don't eat meat, banjoman. One is that they do not like the idea of killing animals. Another is for health reasons. Neither of these precludes them from liking meat. The meat flavoured and meat shaped products are aimed at this market. There are also those who just do not like meat. I know a couple who sent back some veggie sausage in a restaurant because they were too much like meat!

I saw some "lamb chops" once in a shop that had been made to look like real lamb chops in shape and colour. I could have sworn that one edge even looked a bit like the bone. But they were vegan. Very amusing!

banjoman, I think some of these things, however named, make a convenient form of food. Regardless of how it is made, a burger shaped object that you can say simply grill for a few minutes each side is handy.

Of course vegetarianism and related diets do seem to have changed over time and there can be different outlooks. Both my parents are vegetarians of a dairy and egg eating variety but when and why they changed differ. Mum, as a young child got upset over hearing of the fate of her favourite piglet and dad’s came sometime in his late (I think) 40s/early 50s for health reasons. One difference between the two is that mum was initially hesitant to try the Quorn I (not vegetarian but usually have the same meals) I use in the form for fillets (which look a bit like chicken breasts) or the mince (with which I make a “cottage pie”). As far as she was concerned, when I first tried the fillets, she’s “never” liked meat and doesn’t see why things should have to look like a cut of meat.

Fast forward to now and I read of companies vying to produce the most authentic possible Vegan beef burger and I guess even I get lost there. But as far as I’m concerned, if I really wanted a genuine beef burger, I’d have one but quite often would prefer some form of vegetable patty/bake instead. It’s a choice to me.

I guess it can all get rather complicated and confusing. I can also have my own doubts about meat eating but have so far tended towards the “all food is good food” lines and at least try to leave other people’s choices and reasoning to themselves.

I like meat and meat products but have serious reservations about breeding animals just to eat. As I cannot hunt and don't know if I could go through with the kill even if I could hunt, I just try to stick to "free range". Maybe it makes no difference but until such a time as they can grow meat in a Petri dish I will just have to try my best.

One thing that does need to stop if we are serious about ecology. Using millions of acres to grow animal feed. It is such a waste of resources and energy. Grow food crops on arable land to feed people and let animals feed where their own food grows best. If that means less meat, so be it. It should do us good anyway :-)

I once bought some quorn to make a lasagne for some veggies. Worst thing I've ever cooked by a country mile. I mean, what the hell IS that stuff!

I’m a confirmed carnivore but, in an earlier life, we used to use mince which was 50% beef and 50% quorn for dishes such as Spag Bol or Sheherd’s Pie. It was very nice.

For me meat substitutes work fine in sauces, soups and in burgers with condiments, generally in dishes with a number of other ingredients, but I haven't encountered one I'd want to eat outside of those contexts.

In the U.S. something called the Impossible Burger is getting a lot of buzz and I tried one at a fast food outlet, Burger King, and it seemed okay but it was smothered in condiments and "fixins" so it was hard to tell. It's showing up in some restaurants that stress healthy foods but I'm not ready to pay $20+ for a burger. I'm waiting until it hits the grocery stores, assuming that's what they have planned for it.

I quite enjoy a quorn spag bog. Don't use any pre-prepared sauces. Onion, garlic and celery fried in a olive oil. Add a tin of tomatoes and some quorn mince. Stir in a bit of pesto. Roberto's your uncle.

Before Quorn there was TVP, anyone remember that? Texturised Vegetable Protein. It made a fair mince substitute in well spiced meals, as long as you were prepared for the warm and windy by products. I've not used it for years. Quorn sausages are OK but I've enough meat free meals so a meat substitute no longer seems necessary.

"Pigs in blankets and other festive meal treats might be in short supply this Christmas, the British Meat Processors Association has warned.

It says 60% of the labour force in UK meat plants comes from other countries and the industry is not attracting enough seasonal EU workers.

Its chief executive, Nick Allen, told the BBC that wrapping cocktail sausages in bacon was done by hand.

He said the job was "fiddly and hard to mechanise"."

You buy sausages and streaky bacon and wrap one in the other. How can there be a shortage? Sausages can be frozen and bacon has a long use-by date so both can be sourced well ahead of time.

Vegan sausages may be available but I don't believe anyone can make an acceptable substitute for bacon, which is a good enough reason for maintaining an omnivore lifestyle.

Down a rabbit hole via Wikipedia to get through this thread! Quorn - who knew? And by the way, Yuck. Not for me.

Pig in a blanket here in the US is a bit different, larger - it can be made with cut up hot dogs (frankfurters) but the small cocktail sausages are really good for it. You can bother to make homemade baking powder biscuits or yeast rolls, but the shortcut is to use one of the packaged roll products and cut them so you have a small sausage wrapped in the store-bought biscuit mix, and bake it. The ideal result is the sausage poking out from both ends.

Now if you want to dig into some of the immigrant cultures still flourishing in the US, look up kolaches. They are particularly big in Central Texas where a lot of Czech immigrants settled. SPJST lodges (instead of Masonic or Eagle or Elk) are big in the area. And kolaches are the king pastry. Sweet ones have thumbprints of fruit filling on top, or savory come with a sausage completely enclosed in the puffy yeasty dough. Mmmm!

The word "sausage" was first used in English in the mid-15th century, spelled "sawsyge". This word came from Old North French saussiche (Modern French saucisse)". The French word came from Vulgar Latin salsica (sausage), from salsicus (seasoned with salt). It doesn't specify anything about what is being seasoned.

He will now, of course, A) Argue the toss & B) argue the toss especially because he hates anyone arguing back at him about English because he is clearly so superior to everyone else & C) because it's me, of all people, tweaking his nose.

It'll be all "That's what the word might have meant once, but now*…", you watch... 'Ello, Steve, I'm only teasing! ;-)

I like Quorn, use it a lot. Its good stuff -easier to cook than meat.
I'm not keen on the ad. If you just ate what kids like, you'd end up with an impacted colon. the idea that kids set the agenda for what the family eats is daft.

my wife tells me an entire team of The Apprentice didn't know when the second world war was....give sixteen year olds the vote, let six year olds decide your diet, let ninety year olds decide what folk music is....

I find modern life bewildering.

Kolaches are best eaten on the morning they were made, or at least on the same day. If they're a day old you can put them in the microwave for a few seconds to restore much of their bakery goodness.

Hot dogs wrapped in bacon sounds like overkill - I would prefer just bacon to bacon and a hot dog together.

I hate Christmas dinner - I used to work Christmas day to avoid it. Nowadays I go to the Balti House.
