Hamish Henderson - Travelling Folk (BBC Radio Scotland)
BBC Radio Scotland - Bruce MacGregor
11 Dec 2019   Available for 29 days

Bruce MacGregor celebrates the life and work of folklorist, poet,
songwriter and political activist Hamish Henderson who was born in
Perthshire one hundred years ago. Hamish has been described as the
'father of the Scottish folk revival' collecting songs and ballads
from around the country in the 1950's and 60's and sharing this
ancient oral culture with a wider audience. We hear about some of the
key members of the travelling community Hamish connected with through
song. And how he helped American collector, Alan Lomax, to tap into
this rich culture. We also analyse some of his own songs, including
the iconic Freedom Come All Ye.

Featuring Fred Freeman, Janet Henderson, Margaret Bennett, Lori Watson
and Steve Byrne

There was a film about Hamish on BBC iPlayer recently. Its now expired unfortunately.
Without going into the details, for me it begged the question 'did McColl and Henderson ever meet or exchange correspondence.'

GUEST,Roger - yes, they did! For more information on the relationship between the two gentlemen I'd recommend Timothy Neat's two-volume 'Hamish Henderson: A Biography' - which includes an excerpt from a letter that McColl wrote to Henderson in 1951, on the subject of Alan Lomax's visit to Scotland and suggesting that Henderson ought to assist Lomax in his activities there.

Many thanks RA.
I wasn't aware of that book.
There are 2 volumes available as Kindle downloads, so that is my Christmas reading taken care of.

You can listen to Hamish chatting to some of the many people that he collected songs from on two CDs 'Hamish Henderson Collects' and 'Hamish Henderson Collects - volume 2' (Kyloe 107 & Kyloe 110). These are available from Veteran. Here you can hear just how easily he got on with these singers and storytellers. Talk about the right man being in the right place at the right time.
