just sent midi of this to Alison...trying to learn Noteworthy and post some of the contents of an old Scottish songbook edited by George Farquhar Graham. As I told alison, I now have a digital camera capable of putting up a readable text and showing the actual pages of the book, so perhaps I'll post the table of contents of the book and take requests...(yes,,,this was a wierd first choice..it is just where the book fell open...)

Donald Caird's Come Again..(Sir Walter Scott)..

Donald Caird's1 come again!
Donald Caird's come again!
Tell the news in brough2 and glen
Donald Caird's come again!
Donald Caird can lilt and sing,
Blythly dance the Highland fling;
Drink till the gudeman be blind,
Fleech3 till the gudewife be kind;
Hoop a leglin4, clout a pan,
Or crack a pow wi' ony man;
Tell the news in brough and glen,
Donald Caird's come again!

Donald Caird's come again!
Donald Caird's come again!
Gar the bagpipes hum amain,
Donald Caird's come again!
Donald Caird can wire a maukin,5
Kens the wiles o' dun deer stalkin';
Leisters kipper,6makes a shift,
To shoot a muir-fowl i' the drift:
Water-baliffs, rangers, keepers,
He can wauk when they are sleepers;
Not for bountith, or reward,
Daur they mell wi' Donald Caird.

Donald Caird's come again!
Donald Caird's come again!
Tell the news in brugh and glen,
Donald Caird's come again!
Donald Caird can drink a gill,
Fast as hostler-wife can fill;
Ilka ane that sells gude liquor,
Kens how Donald bends a bicker:7
When he's fou, he's stout and saucy,
Keeps the cantle o' the causey;8,
Highland chief and Lawland laird
Maun gi'e room to Donald Caird.

Donald Caird's come again!
Donald Caird's come again!
Dinna let the Shirra ken,
Donald Caird's come again!
Steek the aumrie,9 lock the kist,
Else some gear may well be missed;
Donald Caird finds orra things
Where Allan Gregor fand the tings;
Dunts o kebbuck,10taits o' woo,
Whiles a hen and whiles a sow
Webs or duds frae hedge or yard-
Ware the wuddie,11 Donald Caird!

Donald Caird's come again!
Donald Caird's come again!
Dinna let the Justice ken,
Donald Caird's come again!
On Donald Caird the doom was stern,
Craig to tether,12 legs to airn:13
But Donald Caird, wi' muckle study,
Caught the gift to cheat the wuddie.
Rings o' airn, and bolts o' steel,
Fell like ice frae hand and heel!
Watch the sheep in fauld and glen,
Donald Caird's loose again!

1. Caird or Ceard..tinker
2.Burgh....(grin..fat lot of help THAT is)
3.Flatter
4.A milk pail
5. Snare a hare
6.To spear salmon with a 3-pronged weapon
7.Drinks lustily
8.Middle of the roadway
9.Shut the pantry
10.Large piece of cheese
11.Beware of the gallows
12.Throat to the halter
13.Legs to fetters

(note says the 'original' tune was "no means a good specimen of Highland melody, while the harmonic arrangement given to it is as barbarous as possible"...so a tune based on something by Handel was substituted...)

I have a photocopy of a tune called 'Malcolm Kaird's Come Again - Bagpipe way' which I think was written out from the Skene (18th century?) Manuscript. I don't have it to hand but I wonder if it fits the words.... I could get my dad to abc it if anyone's interested?

Here we go... I've spoken to my dad (he's Phil Taylor who wrote Barfly, an abc reader for Macs) and he gave me a link to Jack Campin's site, he's the one who originally sent him the tunes. The abc for 'Malcome Kaird's Come Again' is on this page it's the second of the tunes there.

Having looked at it, some of it does indeed fit the words - there's ten parts though! Seems like a Northumbrian pipe tune in shape.
