Subject: BS: Happy St George's Day! From: Bonzo3legs Date: 23 Apr 20 - 02:19 AM We have Morris On ready to play loud this morning, and a beautiful gammon joint for our dinner this evening! |
Subject: RE: BS: Happy St George's Day! From: Dave the Gnome Date: 23 Apr 20 - 02:31 AM We have our flags of St George ready for me to put up as soon as I am dressed. I don't know what we are having for tea but I'm having porridge for breakfast. Since he was Turkish and patron Saint of a few countries I think I will go multi-national. Much like England really. Not sure where gammon fits in but I can see a connection here :-) Have a good 'un Bonzo and everyone else. |

Subject: RE: BS: Happy St George's Day! From: Nigel Parsons Date: 23 Apr 20 - 04:27 AM Happy St George's day. I'm Welsh, but I still celebrate as he's the Patron of Boy Scouts. (among his many other patronages) |

Subject: RE: BS: Happy St George's Day! From: Nigel Parsons Date: 23 Apr 20 - 04:35 AM 404: Page not found" Oops, that should be 404 years since the death of Shakespeare. Also 404 anniversary of the burial of Miguel de Cervantes. For some reason his anniversary is celebrated on the anniversary of his burial (in Spain) rather than of his death the day before. And, despite the similarity in the dates of Shakespeare's death & Cervantes' burial the two happened more than a week apart ;) |

Subject: RE: BS: Happy St George's Day! From: An Buachaill Caol Dubh Date: 23 Apr 20 - 10:11 AM Accidental tap. Better add something, even though the ?festival/commemorative day is in a foreign country. Eh... Well, do you think the dragon on the Welsh flag will become part of the UK flag once the legislators of what's left have to add something to the lone, remaining red cross of St George (or just continue to call the rump of a place "England", maybe)? Mind you, the flag of Jamaica has a saltire (gold rather than silver, admittedly), it's kinda colourful, and there's long been a complaint along the lines of "Ain't no Black in de Union Jack". At least for the most part Morris Dancers keep their distance, so little chance of falling foul of current practices and preferences. Good Luck. |
Subject: RE: BS: Happy St George's Day! From: Bonzo3legs Date: 23 Apr 20 - 10:44 AM "How's Mrs 3legs BTW? " She's fine now thanks, fully recovered and started taking short walks with greyhound and myself yesterday in the sunshine - very slow walk though because she needs one of those walkers. The one she uses has a seat so she can rest her back when needed! She gets as far as the end of our street which is about 300 yards then turns around and comes home while I continue with the hound through nearby woods. |

Subject: RE: BS: Happy St George's Day! From: Dave the Gnome Date: 23 Apr 20 - 04:27 PM It's also William Shakespeare's birth and death day! My eldest grandsons birthday too. Guess what he's called. William George :-) |

Subject: RE: BS: Happy St George's Day! From: Steve Shaw Date: 23 Apr 20 - 04:39 PM We don't actually know thst today IS Shakespeare's birthday. We know that he was christened on the 26th, and various historical wags have romantically extrapolated back three days, which would have been within spec in those days... |
Subject: RE: BS: Happy St George's Day! From: Dave the Gnome Date: 23 Apr 20 - 04:51 PM Did he die on the 23rd though? Tell you what though, calling the first lad William George after a name day was a tough one to follow. I don't think Pancake, Hogmanay and Late Summer Bank really like their names... |
