Subject: RE: ADD:Jump In The Line(Aldwin Roberts-Lord Kitchener From: Joe Offer Date: 05 Aug 24 - 09:37 PM Interesting 1958 recording by Joseph Spence. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hugq2HWRt8o&list=RDEMfz84F6HJ5h0DpB5gUWIWrQ Harry Belafonte recording, probably 1961: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kMXBJW1PuU8 Wikipedia article: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jump_in_the_Line_(Shake,_Senora) I know this song from Belafonte, but Wikipedia says it was recorded in 1952 by Woody Herman and his Third Herd. Was this supposed to be Señora, or was it always "senora"? Woody Herman recording: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wJc7qDWagVw |
Subject: RE: ADD: Jump In The Line (Lord Kitchener) From: GUEST,Ewan McVicar Date: 06 Aug 24 - 07:08 AM The resident band in 1964 in a rather seedy nightclub in Mombasa, Kenya, had a great version of the song. |
Subject: RE: ADD: Jump In The Line (Lord Kitchener) From: GUEST,Ewan McVicar Date: 06 Aug 24 - 10:26 AM Joe, this puts me in mind of when in about 1952 friends of my parents came home from Jamaica, and gave us a 10" LP of Lord Invader. The recprd company was something like 'The Island Store'. I learned most of the songs, for example: A verse for Brownskin Gal, 'This dishonest woman Daisy, thought to use her poor brain on me' Milly Milly kindly tell me where did you get the baby?', which ends with the father promising a pram. Very odd one about passing Miss Goosy house and hearing Mr Goosy in his goosy bed. On that disc or elsewhere I got 'Donkey City'. Years later I met the Jamaican ambassador to the UN, who sang me an obscene version. What stuff. These lyrics are probably there in the Mudcat lyrics, I shall have a look now. |

Subject: RE: ADD: Jump In The Line (Lord Kitchener) From: Felipa Date: 06 Aug 24 - 10:43 AM I had a spark of recognition when I saw Joe Offer's recent post with a link to a recording by Joseph Spence. Unlike Lord Kitchener, whose music I've had some familiarity with for a good many years, I don't recall hearing of Joseph Spence (1910-1984) until a few days ago. Spence's birthday anniversary was 3 Aug, and Smithsonian Folkways celebrated the occasion with this tribute |
Subject: RE: ADD: Jump In The Line (Lord Kitchener) From: cnd Date: 06 Aug 24 - 11:57 AM The Avett Brothers used to frequently do Jump In The Line in their live shows but more or less stopped after about 2019/20. He passed just days before they played at Merlefest in 2023, so they brought it back, and had a rather fun rendition https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rmhWeaW-srYM |
Subject: RE: ADD: Jump In The Line (Lord Kitchener) From: GUEST,Phil d'Conch Date: 06 Aug 24 - 02:57 PM Well… it ain't Bahamian and it's at least a few years older than we know. That much we're (sort of) sure of at least. Rumor there was the song had Puerto Rican carnival roots, dunno. Good luck with the American pseudonym spaghetti: Writer's credit on the 1958 Lord Flea Capitol releases was to one “Steve Samuel.” (aka: Gabriel Oller of Spanish Music Company, NY)(Note: Two (2) shakes for the senora.) Shake, Shake, Shake, Senora; w&m Steve Samuel © Spanish Music Center 10Mar50 EU196775 (note: three (3) shakes.) Oller's NYC record label (SMC Pro-Arte ) was co-founded with WEVD-AM radio DJ Art "Pancho" Raymond and bought out by Oller in 1948. WEVD-AM was also the Moe Asch - Folkways home office. Credit on the Woody Herman releases was to “Jessie Cavanaugh” (aka: Howie Richmond) of TSO publishers who bought out Moe Asch's Folkways Publishing in 1950, (with Pete Seeger and The Weavers (aka: Paul Campbell.)) Richmond formed Mars Records in 1952; co-managed with Woody Herman. |
