Hear me out- I think Cage the Elephant's Ain't No Rest For The Wicked (for those who haven't heard it ) would make a great folk song. In the style of Johnny Cash or Marty Robbins, it would be a great inversion of the traditional murderballad tropes, the same themes but coming from the (would-be) victim's perspective. If you can get past the slightly campy music video and mid-2000s alt rock sound, it really has surprisingly good lyricism and storytelling. I may have to make this a reality, who knows...

I'd agree with you, especially if one of the "edgier" modern folk groups, like Devil Makes Three or The Dead South and it wouldn't even need too much changing.
