I don't really care much about profanity. I swear sometimes, but I know who's listening and I don't make a habit of using a lot of it. It's like shouting.

It Initially gets people's Attention, but if you do it a LOT, people tune you out or Just Avoid You. Nobody wants to be Constantly Prompted to FUCKING PAY THE FUCK ATTENTION!!! See - annoying. Especially given that I didn't really say anything.

And may this thread that we dislike so much that we're posting to it to say so (sometimes several times), be ignored by those (other than us) and fade away.

I am of a generation/at a stage/brought up to think that foul language is rarely appropriate. Not so long ago at all, men did not use such language in front of women. Nowadays it is the WOMEN who use it most unblushingly. At this rate a few years from now we are going to have hordes of wrinkly and tattooed crones with filthy mouths on our streets, in our families and in nursing homes.

Arrogance, ignorance and greed are worse, no question, but I do get most awfully tired of the rote-parroting words that some people think give their opinions more force and credence.

Reminds me of the story of a newspaper shop where a reporter demonstrated himself to be fond of the adjective(?): very.

His boss told him to go back and insert 'very' in front of every quality. 'Now take a good look at your story," he said. "Then go back and remove every single one of them."

Well, Margaret, first off, I think your presumptive comment that most people who swear are men, is, to say the least...

Swear words are great...and 4 years down the line from the start of this thread, I'm using them more than EVER before....I even used 'Fucking!' in the council offices of Torquay the other day, when telling them I wouldn't pay my fucking council tax, because it was fucking IMMORAL due to me being a Carer on a very low income who saves this country fucking £loadsa money every year...

And, I told them that if they were more offended by the fact I'd said 'Fucking' to them, rather than the fact that many of their fellow humans couldn't even afford to feed themselves any longer, whilst they colluded in complicit evil, enabling The Fecking Sociopaths in charge to do what they were doing, including to the ill, elderly lady I'd just spoken to in their waiting room, whose benefits had been cut, as in STOPPED, six months back, leaving her only on the minimum Income Support and the generosity of family and friends..they should probably examine their souls!

Yes but, unfortunately, Hunter went bankrupt. I must admit that I've worn Hunter wellies for years (always bought the 'seconds' from the local tack shop) and I still use a pair that I bought ages ago. I can't comment on the new ones but it would seem that making them in the UK wasn't a viable proposition for whatever reason. I once approached them about ideas for their marketing, which was dire, but they weren't interested - in fact, they were quite rude and arrogant.

yes...they based their success on these new brightly coloured wellies (that are most funky =) )...but some of us actually _need_ wellies and Hunter used to produce high quality ones using a unique method for extra water tightness _and_ all production was in the UK...They now charge the same prices but have moved production to...China I think...and they fall apart really quickly because they make them the same way as all the others and they're CRAP.

Slightly irrelevant, I know, but really, I hate when this sort of a thing happens. Are we _trying_ to give all our industry away? And what happened to quality not quantity? And making a living instead being rich bastards? (hail tesco on that one =O )

with imagination can sometimes be effective. Often, though, it's boring because of

A limited use of vocabulary makes communication less effective.

In Holland, they've economized on curse words. There's one that seems to cover
everything (appropriate when you hit your thumb with a hammer driving in a nail).

I think it sounds something like "Khlutsuch". It has a guttural back-of-the-throat
sound to it.
