Subject: Lyr Req: Children's Song in Yiddish
From: Monique
Date: 06 Apr 21 - 03:10 AM

Does anybody know the lyrics of a Yiddish children's song that goes somewhat like...

a sheiner gog a lijtiker
vajst ois uin main zicoorn
a sheiner tog a frilings tog
in maine kinder iorn

ij shpil in gertele
un guib dervail a dreidl
es flamen maine bekelej
di oiguelej sei glien

I tried with different spellings to no avail. Thanks!

Where did you hear this, Monique? I tried searching for a few of the words that had more standard spellings, but had no luck. I don't think I've ever come across a dreidl song that wasn't connected to Hanukkah.
Here are standardized spellings for a few of the words:
  • sheyner - beautiful
  • tog - tay
  • friling - spring veyst - you know
  • meyn/meyne - my
  • kinder - children
  • dreydl/dreidel - top for Hanukkah games
The rest of the words don't make sense to me. -Joe-

I didn't hear it. A lady just emailed me at Mama Lisa's World to ask me to find it for her. I've asked her to give me a link to a recording or video but I'll have to wait till she does.

The Kinder-yorn song GerryM links to is quite nice though it doesn't appear to me be the same as the lyrics Monique and Mama Lisa are seeking. This posting of Kinder-yorn includes English and French language translations as well as Yiddish and transliteration, a music sheet, glossary and links to recording http://yidlid.org/chansons/kinder-yorn/index.html. And on youtube there are other recordings, including one by Theo Bikel, though I have the radio on now and have not checked that they are the same song.

Are you able to work out the Yiddish spelling (Hebrew letters) from the transliteration? As tranliterations are somewhat variable, a search of the Yiddish may be useful.

re translation, for example I tried the last line in another spelling, "in mayne kinder-yorn" and came up with Title: Mayn Shtetele Belz -- ???? ??????? ????
Also known as: Belz
Author: Jacobs, Jacob -- ?????????, ????????
Composer: Yiddish songs just in case the words are familiar to them.
First line: Az ikh dermon zikh in mayne kinder yorn, pinkt vi a kholem..
First line (Yiddish):??? ???? ??????? ??? ??? ???? ?????? ?????, ?????? ?? ?? ????.
[whenever I paste in Yiddish characters they look okay until I submit and then they transmute to ?? but sometimes a Mudcat editor can fix them)

I looked for a Chanukah song with the word "lustiker" rather than "lijtiker". "Khanuke" by M. Revesman mentions "dreyl" in the second verse and the first verse is:

Khanuke, o, khanuke,
A yontef, a sheyner,
A lustiker, a freylekher,
Nito nokh azeyner.

I see Monique says she has tried other spellings too.

I know about the Ruth Rubin archives at Yivo, but find doing an online search there difficult. I emailed a few people who sing and teach Yiddish songs just in case the words are familiar to them.
Mudcat editors can fix them only by going to the original source (and only sometimes), so please be sure to include source information when you copy-paste. -Joe Offer-

I have the song but I don't seem to be able to post here. I taught it to my group yesterday. Here is the whole video of the teaching session, fast forward 10 minutes or so to the song https://youtu.be/I_iX8Hh759I?list=PLFvWT71znY0ffftMbJUpFuKWriZyMKa3D

Here is the song sheet https://www.polinashepherd.co.uk/sing-with-me-past/ It is also in the Mlotek book Songs Of Generations with the name "A Sheyner Tog."

with link to pdf song sheet in Yiddish, transliteration, English translation; and a sound recording.

A Sheyner Tog, a Frilings Tog

"A Beautiful Day, A Spring Day is the name of our today's Yiddish song - and it is Spring for lots of us in SWM! This song is also known with a title Memories (Zikorn). The composer is unknown but the lovely poem was written by Jacob Adler (1873–1973!), a poet and humorist. Adler was born in Dinov, Austria-Hungary (now Dynow, Poland) and immigrated to the US in where he worked in sweatshops, agitated for socialism and wrote nostalgic poems about the "old country". The song was popular in the 1930s in Poland. Interestingly, it was published in a songbook Mir Zingen in 1948 by the MEDEM Center, Paris, through the Union of Jewish Socialist Children.

"Source: Songs of generations: New pearls of Yiddish song., New York E.G. & Mlotek, J., 1995. and National Library of Israel."

1-Thanks all!
2-Sorry I didn't answer before but today is Tuesday and Tuesday is the day I visit my mom so no Mudcat till I go back home.
3 -The lady sent me a home-made recording. It sounds like a lullaby. She says she only has the recording and the "lyrics". I've just emailed Lisa for her to post the request on her blog, I'll tell you as soon as she's posted it along with the recording.
4- Felipa, if your question about working out the Yiddish spelling from the transliteration was directed at me, the answer is no, neither the other way round.
BUT... I've just come across a tool that does it: Lexilogos Yiddish Keybord. When you get the Hebrew characters, you copy and paste them into this tool that encodes the text for you in all those &#... entities that display properly on Mudcat. Too bad we can't download the tool on our computer!
The trouble is that the transliteration > Hebrew works whether the spelling is correct or not, so when you put the "Hebrew" into a translator "Yiddish" > "whatever language" you get gibberish.

The songsheet on the Polina Shepherd Website is almost exactly the same as the song on page 11 of Mloteks' Songs of Generations.
https://www.polinashepherd.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/A-sheyner-tog-a-beautiful-day.pdf

A SHEYNER TOG
(Jacob Adler)

A Sheyner Tog, a Frilings Tog

A sheyner tog, a frilings tog,
Vakht oyf in mayn zikorn,
A sheyner tog, a goldener,
Fun mayne kinder-yorn.

lkh shtif in undzer gertele,
Di vaynshl-beymer blien,
Es flamen mayne bekelekh,
Di eygelekh, zay glien.

Es zogt mir on di mameshi,
Ikh zol zikh nisht fargesn,
Vi nor di zun vet untergeyn,
Dan zol ikh kumen esn.

Der tate hert zikh ayn un kvelt
Un git derbay a shmeykhl,
Un zogt mir on: Leman-hashem
Farkrikh nisht vayt tsum taykhl!
A beautiful day, a spring day

A beautiful day, a spring day
Awakens in my memories,
A beautiful day, a golden one,
Full of my childhood years.

I play in our little garden,
The cherry trees are in bloom,
My cheeks are flaming red,
My eyes are shining.

My mother tells me
I shouldn't forget that
When the sun sets,
I should come in and eat.

My father listens and feels proud
And gives a smile,
And says to me: - For heaven’s sake,
Don't climb too far towards the river!

Folks, the lady thanked, said she feeled moved and attached her "árbol de ilusiones" (tree of dreams). As I can't post it here I'll just tell you that it's a drawed tree with lots of blue and white paper butterflies glued on it and two little branches forming a heart. I've thought you deserve it more than I do, so there!

Here are the lyrics in Yiddish (I hope I type them correctly...)
