Subject: Obit: Gerry Milne 29/05/21
From: GUEST,Cllr
Date: 02 Jun 21 - 11:20 AM

I heard on face book that my old friend Gerry Milne passed on last Saturday.
My thoughts are with his other friends and family.
I met Gerry in the late eighties and he was a constant part of my folk journey. I used to go and watch him busk at Covent Garden and I booked him for Uxbridge FC. My strongest memories are Sidmouth Folk Festival wether in the Newt singing I live in Trafalgar square & Henry the Eighth or lunchtime sessions in the middle bar at the Anchor. I will miss you. Fly on Grey Merlin.

Oh that is sad. A real character was our Gerry, I also remember the 'Enery the Eighth, which he and Terry Silver used to belt out at Sidmouth, in a bar which I have forgotten the name of.
He used to keep company with a very dear friend of mine called Heather, who lived in Surbiton, near the station. She was a regular at The Fighting Cocks in Kingston.
Commiserations to all, and RIP Gerry.

There is an old Mudcat discussion thread - which has just been closed by the site administrators- from when Gerry Milne was ill for some months. That was 13 years ago, so at least it's nice to know that he had some good innings in-between. A Heather Dyer was a contributor to that discussion thread. Is that who you refer to, John MacKenzie?

~ condolences to Gerry's friends and family ~

Ok Somebody help me. Have I got the correct man in my memory? The Gerry Milne I knew played an excellent Gibson guitar, sang traditional songs and ran a club in North London. He used to knock about with the crowd in Richmond including the likes of Dave Byham, Mike Berman, and yours truly. Is this why he is mentioned at Sharps as Gerry M. Milne. If so please accept my grovelling apologies, no offence intended.

Knew Gerry for over 40 years, as part of the Shanty Crew up to 1986 when he retired to become a full-time professional busker, a stalwart at Ceilidh Folk and City Folk (the inspiration of his song The Landlord Got Moved By The Brewery) and also through the Monday night folk session at the Waterman's Arms in Richmond which ended each week with a raising rendition of "I Don't Give a Bugger". After that I saw little of Gerry, but did occasionally run into him stopping for a drink in a Central London pub on my way home from work.

In latter years Gerry was a stalwart of Sharp's Folk Club at Cecil Sharp House and of Brickfolk in Putney, where he had a 100% attendance record. A number songs were sang in his memory at Sharps in Isolation on Tuesday, though the video isn't on YouTube yet.

It was Gerry that first introduced us to the York and Faulkner sessions in Sidmouth which we attended for a number of years eventually ending up running them with Taff Brissenden. Great musician and singer and so encouraging and friendly. Condolences to Sue and Sean.

I met him at Caversham Folk Festival near Reading in the early 80s and kept in touch until I left the UK in 2013. He was a real character and will be much missed. RIP Gerry.

Thank you, I watched it, and as his brother said, I only knew a part of Gerry. Although I knew him for many years, I knew nothing about his upbringing, and education. Hidden depths indeed.
I hope Terry gets a chance to see this, as I always remember the two of them together, playing and singing, in the Newt, at Sidmouth.
