Here in London it has been very recent.

For instance, this weekend (September 4 and 5) sees the return of monthlies Tooting Folk Club (with the excellent old-time group The Rigmarollers) and Dulwich Folk (with the excellent fiddler Ben Paley).
And actually Tooting has had a few outdoor sessions over the summer.

Folk of the Round Table is relatively new among London's folk clubs - sprang up about 6 months before the pandemic hit - but that has been back and running since July at New Cross's Matchstick Piehouse. It's a great singaround club, though with tunes as well as songs. The youngest audience of any trad folk club I've ever known, almost all attendees are in their 20s and 30s.

The Goose Is Out, another great south london folk club has restarted.

The long running Cellar Upstairs has restarted. Orpington Folk and Blues has restarted. Croydon Folk Club has restarted.

Musical Traditions hasn't (which slightly surprises me given how much it overlaps with Cellar Upstairs in terms of regulars). Islington Folk Club hasn't.

So reasonably robust in London then, all told.

Daniel, you can console yourself with these sobering figures: Oz has a recent 7-day average of 1099 new Covid cases per day; for the UK that figure is 33,483.

This is true Matt, also compared to 160k cases a day in the US, and a rising rate of 1000+ deaths a day, despite the vaccines.

We did have to cancel our local September Irish festival, and also another September festival I was due to play at. So it is back to online concerts and the Covideo Facebook group.

Daniel - at risk of sending this thread off on a tangent, do you have the Clubhouse app? You might enjoy the Weds and Thursday evening (7-8pm UK time) folk chats/singarounds on Clubhouse. Audio only. Good fun, even if I can rarely make them as that's normally when I'm doing family stuff.

I've just sidestepped two and I know another local is about to reopen indoors. There are so very many clubs and festivals that I cannot go to anymore, some venues don't exist; so why worry about missing a few more nights out. Stay as safe as poss.

Stockton Heath Folk Dance club is planning to reopen on the 13th, we have a meeting with the school planned for friday to discuss cleaning they want us to do.
I was a Whitby not-Folk-Festival and a couple of us arranged impromptu dances - rather word of mouth and last minute. A couple of us agreed that being double jabbed (and in my case already past my 3 score and ten) life was for living, while our knees, hips, breath etc still let us. I'm not going into crowds to do anything much else, but I do want to do the things that make life worth living.

I realise that you are asking about folk clubs, but my experience this weekend might give an idea of what sort of uptake there will be, even if the clubs are open.

A folk weekend, 'FolkLincs', was held at the North Lincolnshire Museum in Scunthorpe on Saturday And Sunday of the bank holiday weekend. Oudoor concerts were held each day under an open sided tent and workshops, a music session and a singaround were organised for inside the museum. The event was free but entry was by ticket which could be booked on-line.

The session never took place as I was the only person who I had booked a ticket. Similarly, I attended a workshop where a presentation of the FolkLincs folk map was made. I found myself in an audience of one. The singaround was, apparently, fully booked but only about half of those turned up.

I chatted with a couple of people at the outside events. I would expected to have seen them both at the session but each of them, independently, said that they were not ready for indoor sessions just yet.

It was a superb weekend and so good to hear live performances after all this time. It was not the organisers' fault that people were too nervous to attend the indoor events. I suspect that it will be the same with folk clubs. Those that are open could find themselves with just a few brave souls for some time yet.

Here in Kelso we have our Folk Festival this weekend. Then our regular early Friday night floor spots start up again next Friday 10th Sept. Pub sessions in the Cobbles not starting until at least Oct mainly down early closing because of staff shortages. Though with the ever rising cases here in Scotland who knows what will happen. Word is there is likely to be vaccine passes introduced for night-clubs from sometime in Oct - but pubs not mentioned as such.

I must admit, while I'm planning on attending one local folk club when it returns on Sunday I am actually counting on it being a lot less busy than it normally is.
Pre-pandemic it was regularly packed - which is great - but I'm not interested in that kind of density of people in an upstairs pub function room at this particular juncture. I think that's highly unlikely - as the post directly above this one suggests - but if it should be the case I won't stick around.

Faversham folk ckubFAVERSHAM FOLK CLUB IS BACK
From next Wednesday, 1st September, we will be back at the Limes
every week.

The evening will be a singers’ night until we have built up the numbers sufficiently to pay for guests.

Admission is still only £2.00

For those concerned about coming out and mixing: the room will be ventilated with windows open on both sides. So bring warm clothing for later!
Also, there are screens in the club room for people to get behind if they like, particularly when singing.

Lauren, the pub manager, is very proud of the fact that none of her staff have gone down with Covid throughout the pandemic. She also has a vacancy for a barmaid/man if anybody is interested in working in an all female run pub!

I live in California (originally from UK and lived there when I was still very young) I did spend a lot of time in UK,in the 1980's,mostly in London and went to tons of great folk clubs. I was over in UK for my vacations from work in California at that time.

I was looking over these recent posts about folk clubs reopening. I was just curious if most of these clubs shoot video's and if they are posted on the club's website or on Youtube? I would really enjoy being able to watch videos from these clubs of folk singers that normally I would not be familiar with unless they were well known world wide folksingers.

Thanks for the replies so far. Very heartening to hear that at least some clubs are opening up again. A follow on question occurs to me - how do the audience numbers compare with pre-pandemic ? I would expect a possible reduction in numbers, maybe significantly so at this stage, but is this the case ?

Also we will be in a different venue as we leave Long Eaton, Notts to operate out of The Falcon Inn, Long Whatton, Leics.

Lin as per the post from me above we start up on Sep 10th. We have been Zooming for a year and a half and had people from the US, from Switzerland and from Spain listening every week. So the thought is we might see if live streaming the event is an option for those who can't make it in person. If you are FB message me on the Kelso Folk Club Group - or I run the FB Kelso Folk&Live Music Club page. Or email me on kflmc@gmail.com and if it happens you could certainly get the log in details. One club I am involved with is starting live performances again at the end of September, but 2 others are just continuing on Zoom meetings pro tem: the one hoping to start later in the autumn, the other deferring until January at least: and this is barring any further lockdowns, which still remain a possibility.
As for continuing some sort of online presence, we have also had enthusiastic new followers from far afield so are considering for the future maybe having one live session per month, and one Zoom session per month.

The Black Swan Folk Club has reopened in York. I won't be going there, or any other venue, for a while though as I still feel very uncomfortable being in a confined space - especially with rates of Covid being very high at the moment. I am hoping to feel more confident by October when the superb Musicport Festival will be taking place in Whitby

Fol at the Barlow at Edgworth was back in action for the singaround last night and was well attended. We also had a trial of streaming it as a zoom session to a single tester. The main worry was that the wi-fi would not be up to scratch but it seemed to work OK.
With a bit more tweaking it looks like we can have hybrid sessions.

Premises problems may delay the re-start of some sessions or clubs.
In one case, the pub used to let us have the room free before lockdown, knowing that there would be good takings over the bar on what might otherwise be a quiet night. Now they want an unaffordable fee for the room.
In the other place, there has been a change of management , so we don’t know if our club will be welcomed back: also some doubts from members re inadequate ventilation in said room.

In the eighties, The Edinburgh Folk Club met at The (old) Pleasance Cabaret Bar for a few months. That was even before the one which preceded the recent version.

The room charge was quite high but there was an arrangement that we would get a refund or even have the charges waived if the bar takings justified it.
So, we were in a position where we had to encourage everyone to use the bar and drink..   While this suited me at the time, most members drank in moderation or just bought one or two soft drinks.

Suffice to say, we very rarely qualified for a refund. :-(

The Outdoor Club claimed the bar takings but the Folk Club staffed the bar!

Cryer Folk started in Carshalton Surrey just before the great lockdown but has been continuing whenever possible. It takes place every second Tuesday of the month (next one on Tues 12th October). It is in a community theatre with proper stage and some simple amplification (because we want to keep it mostly acoustic). Audience numbers 70 - 120 (had to be kept to 70 in times of restriction). Well ventilated, air conditioning, choice of 2 bars.
The format is 12 acts each doing 10-15min slot followed by come all ye playing session at the end which continues in the bar after 10.30pm until we get chucked out.

I Understand that Stonehaven Folk Club is starting live sessions again as of this coming Friday, 8th October, initially in the Bowling Club.

Balerno Folk Club started again on 28th September: a reasonable turnout though not totally full, so everyone was fairly well spaced. They have a Folk Concert in Balerno Music Festival coming up this Friday, but it is sold out: numbers will be fewere than in previous pre-Covid years, however.

Almond Valley Folk Club has decided to continue on Zoom every fortnight, probably until January: by then, most, if not all of us, should have had their flu jabs and 3rd Covid vaccinations! (But just don't get me started on the total mayhem that is this year's Scottish non-system of getting such jabs!)

Oh, and should have said: Edinburgh Folk Club is back in full swing, with a mixture of guest nights, and occasional Singers' Nights.

And Nitten (Newtongrange) Folk Club had their first live session last week; great turnout. A big room so everyone well spaced, and an exclusive door for entry/exit, and our own bar, so no need to walk through the main bar as we used to do in the past.

Here in the Land of Oz, we in Greater Sydney are almost out of lockdown with 70% of eligible people double vaccinated - in the words of the Venues Manager of my local council - Monday 11th, the day we start coming out of our shells is (quote) now euphemistically being called "Freedom Day" (ps. under 16s have not been eligible until recently)

Hirers were contacted about coming back under covid plans & Govt regulations that include double vaccinations & NO SINGING INDOORS.

So maybe when we get to 80% double vacc rate singing might be back, anyway the world is supposed to be fully open by 1st Dec when non-vacc will be allowed out. Not that some of them will need permission to wander about beforehand ...

Hall has been booked for next year & some of the acts to be programmed will be 3rd-time lucky as they had been originally booked for 2020 & lost out again this year when we went into lockdown in June.

slightly off subject , but I was booked at a festival last weekend, despite the fuel crisis the festival was very enjoyable and successful perhaps a little quieter than normal, but morris sides seemed to do badly with collections down because of antipathy towards using cash and the habit of too much use of cards, some artists thought this had also affected cd sales

Passing the hat will gather less than it did pre covid. As you say, people have got used to using their cards and phones instead of cash. Artists selling their cds will need to think about accepting card payments for future sales.

I continued using cash at the pub between lockdowns. I did use my card at the shops but have now gone back to using cash. Must be my age

Street collection is a problem but are there really still artists out there relying on cash for merch sales?

With so many premises saying cards only, some still, the few coins we accumulate are vital for car parks etc. so don't go to buskers or street teams.

furthermore if people want to see morris dancers and encourage them, i would suggest cash
basically do you want to see morris dancers, then get cash out from the atm or the bank or the post office, if you dont want to see them at festivals it will be a result of not giving them cash

As Guest Joe G reported, the Black Swan has reopened the folk club in York, although for the time being it's running as a singaround with longer spots featuring their residents. It was under a marquee in the car park until a couple of weeks ago. I was in York yesterday and was able to go along. About 30 people in the room, not overly crowded, but it was so very good to hear people singing choruses again and there was a great atmosphere.
Towards the end of the evening, when I was given a longer spot than I'd expected (I was just there by chance, not as a gig), some people who had been standing outside the door came in and sat in the front row. One of them grabbed me excitedly as I came downstairs at the end of the evening. "I've never seen a proper folk singer before", she said, "and it was brilliant!" I said I didn't think I was a proper folk singer. "You certainly are!" she said - so I didn't argue.

Just back from a great night at our local folk club. Everything there is "cash only" though tonight's tickets were sold out in advance, so it was only raffle tickets and bar sales. (Not sure what the artists did for merchandise sales as they managed their own.)

I'm not a scientific expert but I believe the risk of passing and catching Covid from touching surfaces has been overemphasised.

As long as sensible precautions are taken... e.g. cleaning, wiping, and use of hand sanitiser, cash transactions should be safe enough. The virus also only remains there for a short time.

By far the biggest risk seems to be from airborne transmission and, unfortunately, many people and organisations have become far more "lax" about this. Social distancing seems to have gone "out the window" and many don't bother with masks any more even although they are still a requirement indoors and on public transport. In Scotland, at any rate.

Also, good ventilation is very important and plenty of space. I still get slightly nervous in enclosed places when it is really busy but I don't suppose I can hide away for ever.

Some of my friends' attitudes seem to be "let's wait until we've had our 3rd Covid jab before venturing out" which seems fair enough, given that there are a fair number of people whom I know who have caught Covid despite having been vaccinated twice: luckily all have recovered, which may be a benefit of the vaccine but one spent 2 weeks in a High Dependency Unit.
At the Folk Club last night, the back door to the outsde are was kept open for at least half of the night, to allow for better ventilation.

Quite a few dance places have reopened. Perhaps the most "normal" folk dance event was at Moira Furnace Folk Festival (short report)

I think a lot of people need to re-evaluate the situation because it HAS changed.

I started the pandemic in the "Not 70 but act like it" group. The original virus was not particularly infectious and avoiding it completely as I did was feasible.

Now, we have the highly infectious Delta and I'm double vaxed (although that's gradually fading). I am going to encounter the virus whether I go dancing or not so I might as well dance. Things are not going to get any safer.

OK, I would be a little bit safer if I waited for a booster but I've got a bucket list to get on with :-)

"I am going to encounter the virus whether I go dancing or not"

Yes, but does it make a difference how many virus particles get a chance to latch on to you?

Sure, I'm going to be exposed to more virus, more often but I'm probably going to be dead (of something else) before Covid goes away.

"Herd Immunity" is not going to happen. (It took nearly 200 years to eradicate Smallpox and Delta is way harder and not as nasty)

Maybe you're choosing to wait for a super 100% efficacious anti-viral or a 100% vaccine? Fair enough. Enjoy your safe Zoom dancing while you wait :-)

I could be just a tiny bit safer by never dancing again, never crossing the road and never having fish and chips but that won't get my bucket list done!

The bigger than ever list of research etc. here on Mudcat suggests folks are sitting at home and not daring to go.
I'm pleased to hear the account of Anne Lister at York. Live music for me means hearing the person, not an electronic copy. Black Swan did for a while have a PA though a crowded small upstairs room.

Yes, early on, the government identified that a lot of people didn't feel personally threatened enough. There was Project Fear featuring stories of having tubes forced down your throat (not bothering to mention that you'd be under general anaesthetic) and worse. This (psychological) Long Covid will be with millions for years. Quite a side affect!

.. and being with other people

Bunch of 20somethings have recently started a Monday night folk club in a pub that's localish to me - Skehans in Nunhead. It already had a few irish tunes sessions at the pub, so it's known for acoustic live music. An encouraging amount of traditional folk going on in South London at the moment.
