Subject: Folkies on Film From: GUEST,Hartlepool Folk Festival Date: 28 Oct 21 - 09:35 AM Here is a piece we compiled especially for Hartlepool Folk Festival 2021 Online. Folkies on Film is a 30-minute presentation which takes a look through the (mostly) hidden history of your favourite folk stars' early (and not so early) appearances in TV shows and movies. (Think of it as sort of 'Where's Wally?' for folkies.) Aside from an utterly kick-ass theme tune specially recorded for us by David Delarre, this video contains footage of Jon Boden playing fiddle while dressed as a leprechaun, Ewan MacColl breaking every rule of acting (both known and unknown) and Tony Robinson harmonising with Tony Rose. Enjoy! Folkies on Film |

Subject: RE: Folkies on Film From: GUEST,Lin Date: 28 Oct 21 - 09:22 PM At about 24:58 there is a segment where three male singers/ musicians and a female lead singer are singing at the Grand Ole Oprey in 2018. I think the song is "Wild Rose." Maybe I missed it but I could not see where the name of the female singer is mentioned. If someone knows who she is, please post her name. I just didn't recognize her and have never seen any of these folkies on film here in USA before. Thank you. |

Subject: RE: Folkies on Film From: GUEST,Hartlepool Folk Festival Date: 29 Oct 21 - 12:51 PM Thanks, all! Dick - the full Ewan MacColl episode of The Borderers was uploaded to YouTube about a year ago by a member of this parish and can be seen here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KmZ1UtxnFxU DaveRo - pretty sure it's Maida Vale tube station. Lin - the singer is Jessie Buckley, who came second in a British reality TV show to find the next Nancy for a West End production of Oliver! I only realised after the fact that the guitarist in that band was Ewan MacColl's son Neill… Dave the Gnome - thank you so much. And yes, there will almost certainly be a volume 2! |

Subject: RE: Folkies on Film From: r.padgett Date: 14 Nov 21 - 06:51 AM I have watched this well researched film and found it a great piece of work celebrating folk artists and their talents in "folk" singing playing music and acting ~ folk music is more than singing repetitive refrains but is from life experience and storytelling traditions (set to music in some cases) Nicely! Subject: RE: Folkies on Film From: rich-joy Date: 07 Nov 22 - 05:54 PM Thanks again, Jonny, for all your hard work!! Now in Part 3 (!), hopefully Johnny Flynn will make an appearance or three. There're also plenty of Kris Kristofferson movies to make up his own clip. And I mentioned in the Comments below Part 1 about Australia's (uncredited?) Declan Affley & the Wild Colonials, (best Bush/Irish band in Oz at the time), who appeared performing in Tony Richardson's 1970 film of "Ned Kelly" (just one of many made over the years!) Also had that Mick Jagger bloke in it, but don't let that put you off :) Critics weren't particularly kind, but my problem with the film was American Country Music's Waylon Jennings singing Shel Silverstein songs for the soundtrack : STREWTH DOREEN!! Cheers! R-J |
