Subject: Lyr Add: Last Thing On My mind: Parody From: Rusty Dobro Date: 09 Nov 21 - 03:06 PM As heard at the last Mudcat Zoom meeting: There's no lesson I'm capable of learning, 'Cos my mind's on the blink I always hope that my memory's returning, But I'm too old, I think. When I go to the kitchen I look round in fear, Am I here to get coffee or beer? I look around for clues but there's nothing I can find, I'm searching for the last thing on my mind. As I drive in my car in the morning, Where to go? I just don't know. A suspicion is gradually forming, That my mind's working slow. Was I going to the station, or was it the bank? Oh, why has the last hour gone blank? I try to remember, but it's hopeless, I find. I can't recall the last thing on my mind. I had reasons a-plenty for going, What they were I just can't say. Now my panic is rapidly growing, I've been in Tesco's all day. Did I come to buy sugar, is it cabbage I need? Was it Oxos or budgerigar seed? I did make out a list, but I've left it behind. Whatever was the last thing on my mind? I know the capital of Texas is Austin, I know Morocco's is Rabat, I can name Southampton's winning FA cup team, Just how sad is that? But don't ask me to tell you what I did yesterday, For my memory has drawn down the blind, I used to get upset, now I'm becoming resigned To searching for the last thing on my mind. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Add: Last Thing On My mind: Parody From: GerryM Date: 09 Nov 21 - 04:33 PM Good one, Rusty. You also posted it some years ago in the "Lyr Req: alzheimer parody of Last Thing On My Mind" thread, which was prompted by a creation along similar lines by Sue Trainor. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Add: Last Thing On My mind: Parody From: The Doctor Date: 10 Nov 21 - 05:33 AM I heard this verse sung by Archie Fisher, who said it may have been written by TP, or at least approved by him. Well, I met a young girl at a folk club, as you do, as you do. We went out to a pub round the corner, for a brew, for a brew. She invoted me back to her one bedroom flat, And she said we were two of a kind. Then she played me every record Tom Paxton ever made - Well you know that was the last thing on my mind. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Add: Last Thing On My mind: Parody From: Howard Jones Date: 10 Nov 21 - 07:01 AM The version I heard was from the hammered dulcimer player Jim Couza and is very slightly different. I think it scans and rhymes better. I met a girl at a folk club As you do, as you do I bought her a drink and I asked her her name Wouldn't you, wouldn't you? And when the gig was over she said "Come back to my place I think you and I we have similar tastes" Then she played me every record that Tom Paxton ever made And you know that was the last thing on my mind. |

Subject: RE: Lyr Add: Last Thing On My mind: Parody From: GerryM Date: 10 Nov 21 - 04:42 PM There is a video online where Paxton sings the "I met a girl at a folk club" verse. He didn't write it, he says, "Someone found this on the internet and sent it to me." https://youtu.be/6kIsM-DdfDQ |
Subject: RE: Lyr Add: Last Thing On My mind: Parody From: Black belt caterpillar wrestler Date: 10 Nov 21 - 05:47 PM After a windy day back in 2008 I came up with this. THE LAST THING ON MY LINE .© Robin Madge 2008 It's a lesson too late for the learnin' Tumble dry, tumble dry In the wink of an eye my sheets are turnin' Wind’s too high, wind’s to high. CH. Are you blowin' away with no word of farewell Will there be not some lace left behind? Well I should have pegged you better, Didn't mean to be unkind You know that was the last sheet on my line. You've got reasons a-plenty for goin' This I know, this I know For the wind have been steadily growin' Please don't snow, please don't snow. As I lie in my bed in the mornin' Without you, without you I’m too cold to be ever a-snorin’ Turning blue, turning blue. Robin |
Subject: RE: Lyr Add: Last Thing On My mind: Parody From: The Og Date: 11 Nov 21 - 11:13 AM Adapted from an earlier muscat posting... I Forget What was the Last Thing on My Mind? (A) G on 2 ...based on a parody by Sue Trainor G C G C G D G It’s a question too late for the asking, I don’t know, I don’t know, C C In the blink of an eye my thoughts are passing, C G D G Where’d they go, where’d they go? D C G Thoughts are drifting away with no word of farewell, C G D Will there be no ideas left behind? G C G I used to be a genius but today I seem to find, D G I forget what was the last thing on my mind. There’s little that I can’t help forgetting, let me think, let me think. Its my mem’ry that deserves the regretting, On the blink, I need a drink. As I drive in my car in the morning, where to go, where to go. A suspicion is gradually forming, Just don’t know, just don’t know. _ _ _ _ _ Here I am in the doorway to the Walmart, in the way, cannot stay. I had reasons a-plenty to be here, To my dismay, they went away. Tomorrow is a vast ‘n endless highway, lots of swank, in the tank. Any way’s a better choice than my way, Let’s be frank, my mind’s a blank. _ _ _ _ _ |
