Visa debit cards are still OK as are Mastercard credit cards (as far as I know). Is this definitely Amazon's fault...?

errr.. some of us far less well off UK citizens
have to use credit cards we are clinging onto by the skin of our teeth,
because debit accounts are already up to the brim with monthly direct debits bills...

Not much value to amazon's kindly offer to help us through the transition [ie, 20 quid amazon token bribe]
to other credit cards which will very likely reject our applications...

Anything in the News about reaction to this email sneaked in today...???

Oh well, back to Ebay and old fashioned shops
when we need to replace knackered kettles etc, or buy essentials, and presents for family etc...

Be interesting what happens to skint consumers who took out amazon interst free 5 month instalment payments on UK Visa cards,
if payments are still outstanding after the 19th Jan...???

Yep.. it's on BBC news Red Button..

So as immediately suspected, at a time of extremely difficult recovery from pandemic crisis,
financially stressed UK consumers are bargaining chips / collateral damage
in a war between amazon and visa...

Hope the smug billionaire dick enjoys his next big kid dress up pretend astronaut joyride almost space...

That's odd. Chase administers the cards here in the US, so I'd say look at that bank and it's policies first. Who issues the cards in the UK?

You can use other credit cards with Amazon, though it doesn't earn the points toward future purchases. But if you don't pay your balance monthly the interest may be higher than the points you earn.

I have a prepayment card (I load it up with euros when the exchange rate is favourable) that I've had for years and use when we go into Europe. I have a vague recollection that a few years ago a large number of businesses in Europe were in revolt against Mastercard, the provider of my prepayment card, over excessive fees for transactions. Something like that. We were temporarily worried that it would make our card almost useless, but in the end it got resolved, possibly by Mastercard lowering its fees?

But Visa vs Amazon...a war between two bad boys, like most wars...

We breathe the polluted air...

Perhaps it's beyond Amazon's imagination that a lot of poorer folks aint got bank accounts, or debit cards...???

..and most certainly can't easily 'transition' to a different credit card on Amazon's demands...

That's a nice xmas and new years slap in the face,innit..

..create mass demand and dependence on amazon prime services,
then threaten to make it all too exclusive out of reach for too many customers
who were seduced into buying into the prime eco system..

Gonna be a lot of useless echos and alexa enable appliances gathering dust...

I don't know that Amazon's that worried about poor folk.
But this may be a bargaining position, playing hardball with Visa and customers just caught in the middle.

It is possible to live without Amazon. I was a regular moderate user but last Autumn I found it impossible to make a purchase without signing up for Prime. I carefully checked all options but Amazon still "gave" me a "free trial" membership with payments starting automatically a month later. I cancelled it the same day - I don't spend enough to justify the cost.

This year I have bought from Amazon 3 times. A replacement bike light, which I would previously have bought from Holland Bike Shop - no longer shipping to UK - thanks Brexit! An expensive printer cartridge 18% cheaper than anywhere else. This week, a panel of reed screening cheaper than direct from the supplier and with shorter delivery.

Everything else, including about 20 books, I have been able to buy at the same or lower prices elsewhere.

Well it's all very nice to hear about such positive situations for some individuals.

But maybe we could get back to discussing the potential plight
for millions of hard up British people who do use Amazon regularly,
and are stuck with uk-issued visa cards...

Malcolm - yeah.. no doubt the word "amazon" in the title will attract 'very helpful' comments
from the gloaters and boycotters..

But this is a fight where amazon seem intent on shooting their own feet,
kicking their own arses,
slitting their own throats,
etc...

I asked alexa why amazon are being such ****s to loyal British customers,
but she stayed silent...

I asked her a supplementary question, but she only said "No" in a very offended tone of voice...

It seems visa are taking advantage of the UK no longer having the EU cap on credit card fees and putting their prices up.

Someone on a television program I was watching last night said a line about being ready for something - and Alexa, via the Echo dot on the shelf below the TV, said "I'm ready."

Back to the topic. :)

Visa and Mastercard are putting their fees up, from 0.3% to 1.5%. But MC provides Amazon's own credit card so Amazon presumably cut a deal to pay less. Now Amazon are leaning on Visa - and paying MC back for the discount. All to the inconvenience of shoppers who only have one sort of card.

Amazon are mitigating the extra cost of Brexit - for some of us.

There are 66 million credit cards in the UK, used by 36 million people - 65% of the adult population.

Dealing with Amazon leaves a bad taste in my mouth now, after years of refusing to deal with unions and stories of truly horrible work practices. So I tend to check the price on Amazon and then buy locally; sometimes, if the price difference is double, and if I'm particularly broke, these principles break down.
If you want to buy from abroad without problems, NewportBoy, you may find that there's some local service that gives you a "European" address and then delivers your stuff to you in the UK.

I don't think people were always seduced. Given the "optout" methodology of Amazin' on every purchase, I would quite accurately say people were conned. I had to get out of it and refused to use Amazin' thereafter because I don't like being conned. And I would have had to search the minutia and optout each time, which is a chore I detest. They must have done their sums, but the Visa debacle will lose custom.

I use Ebay, it sells the same things. Mind you it constantly tells me I have been approved for a PayPalVisa but then backtracks with a subject to status quite! a red rag to a bull

Don't Amazin' push their own credit card or something?
