Had a long discussion with my son and grandson yesterday on this and the main conclusion was that the modern batsman (sorry batter - thought that was something to cook fish in) plays at almost every ball.
The reason for this of course is the ascendancy of one day (pyjama) cricket where dot balls are considered gold dust - so every ball must be played at.
Geoff Boycott would probably not have got into the Yorkshire side these days - let alone England.

Couldn't agree more, John. It seems that the one-day formats are nobbling the long game with respect to batting. I don't watch much cricket these days, but what I do see is bad footwork, risk-taking, poor decisions and a penchant for going for the spectacular. Against decent bowling, they are the quickest ways to get yourself out.

Absolutely spot-on, Steve. The 50- and 20-Over games are fun to watch and a great day out, but the concentration on that format by coaches and management is wrecking the five-day game. And that’s a tragedy.

they need batsmen with good defnsive technique Trevor bailey was one unfortunately he is now dead, as is brian bolus.
boycoott however is alive and has those qualities.
they need batsmen who have a good defence, and who can also score runs along the ground, they have arrogant members of the team but they cannot bat very well

Joe Root scored 1,708 test runs in 2021, at an average of 61.00.

We seem to have one genuine test batsman but no one who can support him.

Would not be so bad if Australia were an outstanding team, which they are not.
I'm sure Dick was only suggesting Boycott as the sort of player England should be looking for.
I could name any number of sports persons who are not saints but the determination to succeed is a big factor in their success - and before you assume otherwise I am not defending Boycott as a man.
I could name some Folk performers too but they are harder to find.

the problem is this twenty twenty cricket encourages baseball technique, Test cricket is a different game that requires different batting skills. i would suggest a different batting coach for test cricket, MAYBE boycott or tavare, for test cricket both twenty twenty techniques and test techniques are in fact required for different situations. as well as joe root we need to find at least two other batsmen that can drop anchor successfully as well as those that can hit quick runs/
BOTH BOYCOTT AND TAVARE have in the past scored very quickly as well as very slowly ,CHECK IT OUT

Three things Sandman, Firstly Raggytash is one word not two, secondly using capital letters is considered shouting on Mudcat and is frowned upon and, lastly, if you knew anything about English cricket you would know that the different formats of the game have different coaches both for batting and bowling.

I have been following cricket since 1962 . It would seem that the batting coaches need replacing , they are not getting good results.
in 1962 we had teams that knew how to save matches,tht was partly due to good coaching

Rather OT and an Australian and I don't want to start an obit thread but I see Shane Warne has died at 52.

He was an amazing spin bowler and handy with the bat. I'll never forget his "Ball Of The Century" to Mike Gatting at Old Trafford.

I can't believe that Shane has gone. I followed the famous 2005 Ashes series, so romantic, even though I'm far more of a footie than a cricket aficionado. Funny thing is that, as a lad in Lancashire, I followed the local cricket scene in the Lancashire League as well as the Central Lancashire League. Each local town team had a "professional." In Radcliffe we had, in turns, Frank Worrell, Sonny Ramadhin and Garfield Sobers. Everton Weekes had a house in my street and the Windies' parties there were legendary! I'd go to the Racecourse cricket ground in Radcliffe as a little lad and be standing feet away from Gary Sobers as he fielded on the boundary. I can honestly say that I saw the grass stains on the arse of Sobers' whites! My uncle, long dead now, used to watch Accrington in the Lancashire League. Shane played for Accrington for a while. Less than two years before Shane bowled "the ball of the century" to Mike Gatting in his first-ever Ashes test, the Accrington fans had lost patience with Shane: "Get 'im out!" "Bloody go 'ome!" Uncle told me that the local lads knocked Shane's bowling all over the park! A bloody legend was Shane, best bowler ever in m'humble, and a great bloke to boot. It's a sad day for cricket, is this.

Your mention of Shane Warne reminded me that legendary 70s-80s Sandgroper cricketer, Rod Marsh, passed on the SAME day (also as the result of a heart attack) - but his passing being somewhat overshadowed by news of Warnie's demise (at a younger age), in Thailand!!

I can't claim to know a great deal about cricket, but I do recall that the phrase "Caught Marsh, Bowled Lillee" commonly punctuated both the airwaves and print, in my earlier days.

In the school holidays when I was still in single numbers I'd watch the test matches on the telly when I could get away with it. In those days it was Gary Sobers, Rohan Kanhai, Frank Worrell, Ted Dexter, Richie Benaud, Ken Barrington, Fred Trueman, Brian Statham, Brian Close...

They had a habit in my home town, Radcliffe, of naming streets on new estates in honour of local sporting heroes. One such was called Statham Avenue after the estimable Lancashire fast bowler, Brian Statham. The story goes that the local council committee responsible for agreeing new street names, all the members of said committee being ignorant of cricket, came within a hair's breadth of calling the street "Brian Close..."
