Tonight it was Canada versus USMNT,
and Canada won, in Hamilton, Ontario's Tim Horton stadium.

I didn't (could not) watch, just followed online reports.

Sounds like it was an exciting game.
That team from Canada has been going through CONCACAF matches
and drawing a lot of attention.
The last time Canada went to the World Cup, according to the Guardian,
was 1986, which is to say,
Before the Mudcat Cafe/Forum.

Just tried to ascertain the sport. Not a lot of clues out there but it looks like football, the soccer type footie.

Pardon me for asking, but
how many different World Cups are there?

Yes, I did say CONCACAF which you have to know about
if you live in the Pan-American hemisphere;
and the FIFA World Cup is what I had in mind.

Not that USMNT is out of the running, but
they will have to work a little harder now
to qualify for the 2022 World Cup.
Good on Canada. Now they get to freeze out Jamaica . . .

In answer to your question - loads of 'em! A dozen just for football!

Hey Keb, CONCACAF? USMNT? WTF?

Have a heart buddy - please remember we’re not all North Americans here, USA-ian abbreviations mean nothing to some of us, although football (the real football that the rest of the world understand) means a great deal!

Backwoodsman, those are FIFA's abbreviations. We just use 'em.

FIFA includes
six continental governing bodies for association football,
says Wikipedia,
and one of those six bodies in FIFA is
the Confederation Of North [America],
Central America, and
Caribbean Association Football,
consisting of
the Guianas (in South America but considered Central America),
Central America (including the redoutable men's team from Mexico), and
North America (Canada, USA).

That puts CONCACAF on the same footing as
UEFA,
CONMEBOL,
OFC,
CAF, and
AFC,

all within FIFA.

And USMNT, I believe is supposed to mean
United States Men's National Team.
Hope that helps!

Thanks Keb! I think the difference is that in the United Kingdom we tend not to throw those kinds of abbreviations around. So The only two I’ve ever heard of in that list are UEFA and FIFA itself.

I suppose, using the kind of abbreviations used in the list, our National men’s team would be ‘EMNT’ - it’s a lot easier to just say ‘England’! ;-)

Congrats to Canada. It can be confusing for folks in other countries when abbreviations are used but to be fair to the original poster too I think the bulk of Brits when hearing "the World Cup" would naturally presume what was being talked about is the football World Cup. It is so huge it just gets called that. Where other ones tend to be more specified.

Hi back to Baxter and Backwoodspersons!

This is a busy week for football in the Americas.
USA leads Honduras 2 - 1 at the moment.
Costa Rica leads over Jamaica 1 - 0.

Canada will shortly play a game against El Salvador,
and Mexico against Panama.

Yesterday was the big day for CONMEBOL, that means
South America, which of course means
Argentina, Brazil, Chile ...
also busy with FIFA World Cup Qualifiers.

Anybody want to watch a really weird goal being scored?

The short report is, Canada went to El Salvador's home stadium
and won.

Not for me to say, how far Canada's men's football team will go
if they qualify for the FIFA World Cup this year.

But this team has won more consistently than the
USA men's football team, which had some flashy wins and humbling defeats.

It would be encouraging to see Canada at least get there.
If I read right, their coach is a Newcastle native.

If the soccer version of Team Canada reaches the World Cup in Qatar, don't expect much.

Canada's rugby team routinely gets to the Rugby World Cup only to bomb in the first round. Edmund and I were present for the acutely embarrassing 2015 appearance in Cardiff, where the Irish cleaned Canadian clock 54 - 7. We could not figure out how Canada managed that one converted try and decided it must have been pity on the part of the Irish.

Charmion, you might still consider what Team Canada has to experience
in order to make it to Qatar, and to qualify for the World Cup.

It's called, over here, 'getting CONCACAFed'
and it means what you might suppose it means.
It's an experience with history and myth behind it.

A good summary of 'getting CONCACAFed' can be found in this
Sports Illustrated feature article from 2021.
