For my sins as a long time Lord of the Rings fan, I am forced to play Lord of the Rings Online (LOTRO), a massive multi-user RPG for hours on end! :-D

When I am about to finish I always put my character, a dwarf called Strongintharm who sometimes rides a horse called Daftinthead, somewhere safe and, more often than not, sit him down by a campfire or in a pub with a pint of beer.

Is anyone else as daft as me when it comes to looking after made up characters that only exist in computer games?

I have enough of a job making myself stop playing Solitaire, no way am I getting into an online gaming environment.

Does setting your avatar and his steed in a safe place assure that he'll still be there next time you return to the game?

It does but I do it even if he is in a safe place already. I just like to make sure he is comfy :-D

Gamers are a breed apart, are they not?
I'm not one of 'em.
Have known a few. Highly intelligent and verbal, and restless.

Sounds just like me apart from the highly intelligent bit!

I forgot to say, Strongintharm also plays fiddle. I left him in in his house at 1, Anvilsong Road, playing a nice tune tonight. Made sure he lit the fire first.

It might be a mistake to ask, but what does he do when you're actually playing the game?

I have known gaming to be beneficial in times of grief or trauma.
At least more beneficial than incessant wine drinking.

He used to kill orcs but he is mainly beyond that now. He is currently trying to follow in the footsteps of Frodo and Sam but Cirith Ungol is proving too much of a challenge.

That is a pretty tough spot. In mountaineering we use the adage "climb with your eyes" so you can pick where you're going to reach for next. Never get spread-eagled. I don't know if this applies to virtual climbing.

In climbing I always liked the saying: "you're doing great! Now put your legs where
your hands are!"

I once heard the comment that one's arms get tired while climbing because they're above head height so much .... but that the same isn't usually true of the legs.

/me absails away and hides.
