Hi,
does anyone know the names of the 1st and 2nd tune of The Kerry Polkas-Sharon Shannon & Friends (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8M4gI_kBoMs). The last is Jingle Bells. Thanks.

She will be at the Ely Festival 10-12 July. I hope to be there. If no answers below, I could ask, maybe.

I'm terrible with polka names. The second was recorded by "Patrick Street" as "The Newmarket", but there are other polkas with the same name. It seems to be associated with melodeon player Terry "Cuz" Teahan/Teehan, and is sometimes named after him. If no one else comes up with a name for the first, I'll start looking. I have heard it before.

The tune before Jingle Bells is Camp Town Races,The first tune sounds slightly familiar, the second less so,the balance of instruments in the recording makes a clear tune difficult to make out.

The first AND second polkas were recorded by "Patrick Street" on their 3rd LP/CD "Irish Times". The collective title for the set was "The Newmarket Polkas".

After listening again to the recording, which like many Irish session sets with a large number of different instruments, make a clear tune difficult to hear, and further research, I agree with guest at 4-27 12th June. The first three tunes are the Newmarket polkas 1,2,and 3 the other two tunes being Camp Town Races and Jingle Bells.
A great set of tunes, I'd like to hear it with a better balance of sound to make the tunes clearer.
All three of the polkas can be found on you tube played on solo instruments where they can be heard with clarity

A minority opinion: Although I recognize the "Doo-Dah, Doo-Dah" passage, I'm not ready to call that third tune The Camptown Races.

A different setting of the Camptown Races? Hmmm.

A Co. Kerry setting of the "Campdown Races" [sic].
There's a setting - #346, pp 201 - in Johnny O'Leary's collection of tunes "Johnny O'Leary of Sliabh Luachra".
Accompanying notes say this :
"Johnny learned this tune from Jack Sweeney. It is quite far from the American version of "The Campdown Races". The link between the two versions is the version on the recent recording of Padraig O'Keeffe".
Johnny O'Leary was recorded playing his version on the 19th January 1992.

Campdown races as mentioned by guest can be heard on youtube at the address below. It is as stated quite far from the original American version, not unusual with folk tunes.

It is not an usual tune in a polka version, I have recorded versions of Patrick Kelly and a duet of Elizabeth Crotty and Kathleen Harrington, both from the 50s/60s so it was doing the rounds in South West Clare at the time

Says my aul one to your all one, it's a versatile tune for all sort of occasions.

I changed the first occurrence of "aul" but there are two in the line. Should both words be aul, not all? ---mudelf

Sounds like Kerry musicians took the tune and made it their own. I was keying in on the "quite far from the American version" aspect.
