Subject: The Tell Tale Singers From: GUEST,D. Kingsley Hahn Date: 03 Mar 23 - 06:44 PM Anybody know anything about an early 1960s folk group called The Tell Tale Singers? I have two albums by them (one on Vox, & one on Aravel); but there are no liner notes on either album, nor any names of the performers. Half of the Vox album is performed by a gospel group called The Goldenaires; but the Aravel album is entirely performed by The Tell Tale Singers. Except for "Hard Ain't It Hard," all the songs are public domain. |
Subject: RE: The Tell Tale Singers From: Joe Offer Date: 03 Mar 23 - 10:34 PM Discogs.com has pretty good information on the 1964 Vox Negro Spirituals album by the Tell Tale Singers and the Goldenaires Choir: The 1963 Aravel Sing Out America album by the Tell Tale Singers ishere: And then there's a 1963 Tell Tale Singers album titled Gospel Favorites. The label is Folkways Records – P4RM-9811, but I don't think that's the Moses Asch Folkways: |
Subject: RE: The Tell Tale Singers From: GUEST Date: 04 Mar 23 - 12:59 AM Looks as if that "Gospel Favorites" album on the fake "folkways" label is the same as the Vox album, with the Goldenaires. The information on Discogs is mighty slim, unfortunately -- the Aravel album was released in 1963, and the Vox album in 1964; and the Production Manager on the Aravel album was Bob Borchardt, who had also worked on other Aravel releases featuring Pete Seeger, the New Lost City Ramblers, Los Indios Taba-Haras, plus a folk-blues compilation album. Interestingly, the Tell Tale Singers album is "Released by special arrangement with Folkways Records,"as is the Pete Seeger album and the folk-blues compilation. I'll have to check my copy of MAKING PEOPLE'S MUSIC to see if any mentions are made of the Tell Tale Singers. |
