Lorcan and Genie are facing tough times. After a multi-year fight, they have lost their residence, their theater and their museum. They have been evicted as the result of shady dealings with the loan industry. Any assistance will be appreciated. They have done a lot of good for many of us and it is time to help them.

Friends of Genie Otway from Theatre 80 St. Marks
You

Hello Friends,

For over 50 years, Genie Gilmore Otway and the Otway family have been a pillar of the community in the East Village. Through their beloved businesses, Theatre 80 St Marks, William Barnacle Tavern, and The Museum of the American Gangster, they provided employment, friendship, and a port in the storm for those in need.

Tragically, after a long battle to recover after the effects of COVID business closings, last week Genie and her family were evicted from their historic building and evicted from their home.

The future is very uncertain for Genie and she needs some financial help to tide her over while the situation is addressed. We're seeking donations to help her cover basic needs for medicine, food, basic necessities and storage fees for the possessions she managed to salvage from her home.

Genie has a huge heart and has been so generous to so many over the years. Here is our chance to support her. Any donation, big or small, will go a long way to help her through this incredibly challenging time.

Here is PIX11's Marvin Scott covering the situation a few days before the eviction.

Best,

The Friends of Genie Otway

Lorcan told me about that the last time I saw them in New York. The whole neighborhood has been bought up by investors who were trying anything they could to leverage their power and get the theater out of the way. It sounds like they found some devious way to finally accomplish what they wanted.

Long before I knew about Mudcat or knew Lorcan I lived in New York and went to movies at the Theater 80 St. Marks.

A Greenwich Village friend sent me an email last week with the information that they had been locked out - so it isn't just out of their home, but it sounds like with nothing out of the apartment either. They have an amazing home and collections. email from VillagePreservation.org viewed in browser.

Dear Friends:
Just found this - and thanks Eric. For up to date information, you can go to the Facebook site, Save Theatre80. I should be spending more time on Mudcat, now that I am homeless. I was working 12 to 18 hours a day to keep the the theater growing, now I am back to busking. Isn't life unpredictable?
Best to all,
Lorcan
