Subject: BS: Morning Person? Night Person?
From: Ebbie

This will be a short thread, no doubt, but today a group of us were pondering upon this:

Do Early Morning People think of Spring as their favorite season?

Do Late Night People like Autumn better?

I like night. I rarely go to bed before 1:00 and often not until 3:00 or so. Nighttime is velvety, it's quiet indoors and out, for me it's a creative time. Day time is noisy and sweaty and it tends to be quarrelsome.

Autumn is my favorite season. Spring is pretty and hopeful while Autumn is rich and reflective. Spring is immature and a bit silly, Autumn is wiser, with a larger perspective, and is able to pursue goals as well as still able to play.

What say ye?

I'm definitely a morning person. I get up around 6am, (despite being retired!), and go to bed around 10pm. I actually love the Spring. Autumn makes me a bit depressed, with the nights 'drawing in' and the trees losing their leaves etc. So I reckon your theory is correct Ebbie.

Keep in mind that this is *my* perspective, Eliza, so of course I make it sound better than someone else might! I'm sure that there are many people wiser and smarter and better balanced than I even if they are Morning People. ha.

You don't have to be either a morning or night person.

There are tines when I sleep in shifts - a couple of hours asleep in an armchair, mid evening, then wake up and watch TV until gone midnight. Wake up next morning, ready to start the day. Other times I might read for an hour around 4 a.m. then go back to sleep until 8:30. Then again, there are times when I stay awake through to bed time then sleep right through until morning.

I used to think I was a morning person but I am, in fact, a morning on my own person. My wife normally sleeps in late when possible. Nothing is more annoying than her getting up early and disturbing my routine. If I know that she has to get up early, I will get up an hour before, to have the time on my own. It doesn't really matter what time is says on the clock. Getting up is getting up.

I like Spring and Autumn equally and look forward to the arrival of each with anticipation.

DC

Every time of day and season has its own delights :-) What does that make me?

I generally go to bed at about 2 AM and get up at about 8.30. I'm brilliant at napping during the day but that might happen about three times as week, not every day. Spring seems to last a very long time and blows hot and cold (literally) for months on end, which leaves me impatient, though I love all the burgeoning of nature. Autumn is pleasant but that can't overcome the feeling of doom and gloom as it heralds winter, which is generally just mucky and wet round here. Give me a nice few summer months every time.

I'm a night person - I started work in 1970 when everyone did 9-5. A few years later the Public Service introduced Flexi-time, & I jumped at the chance to work 10-6, couldn't understand the colleagues who started at 7am - weirdos.

I had to catch the 8.05 intrastate train yesterday & as I said to the newsagent & the lady in the food shop where I bought my brekkie (yummy egg sandwich), I normally wake at 8! I had to go to bed just before 12, not 1.30 to 2, to get in my normal 6 hours, & do the stuff I needed to do before leaving.

I'm not sure about my favourite season, but I know my un-favourite - Sydney's hot humid summer!

Spring & autumn are both good & winter in my part of Sydney (edge of the CBD, near the harbour tho it's hidden by tall buildings) doesn't get very cold. I have my windows locked open 6" all year, & don't own a heater, I add layers & look like the Michelin man.

In spring some of the zygocacti on my north-facing windowsill flower, the rest of them flower in autumn.

Six of one, half a dozen of the other!

Since I was 14 years old and got a paper-round six days a week, I've been an early-riser - in those days up at 5am for a 5:45am start, when I started a 'proper job' up at 6am for a 7:30am start. I've got up at 6am ever since, still do, despite being into my 12th year of retirement. It helps that Mrs. Backwoodsperson still works full time, so she's also a 6am-er.

Weekends I sometimes have a lie-in until 7 or 7:30.

Unless I'm out playing music, I'm in bed with a book around 9:30, read until 10:30, then lights-out.

Works for us.

Like Backwoodsman, I began by delivering newspapers at 5-6 AM... then I spent most of my working years getting up early and punching someone's time clock. During my college years, I often had early morning classes before going to work. This continued as I worked full-time.
Then, unlike Backwoodsman, when I retired I discovered that my comfort zone meant staying up till 11 or 12 PM (maybe later) and sleeping until eight or nine AM. I try very hard not to schedule a doctors appointment or any such thing like that before 11 AM, and preferably in the early afternoon. I can still cope with early morning if absolutely necessary, but it requires setting the alarm clock.
Here's a kind of technical explanation of all..
diurnal cycles

I also had to do the morning paper route with my brother a couple of times a week, but that didn't turn me into a morning person. When Dad took us fishing it was torture to get up before dawn, and the same goes with the hobby of a dozen years, mountain climbing, when we had to meet in a dark parking lot to carpool to the trailhead. It was the glory of those activities that pushed me to push myself to rise early.

Even as a retiree I tend to be up until 11 or 12. My next door neighbor gets up before dawn and gives my dogs a treat over the back fence: I know this because one of them barks to get his attention as soon as his kitchen light is turned on. If he has his hearing aids in he hears her and they get their treat. There are some issues with this system, but they love it. I go back to sleep until I'm ready to get up.

Definitely autumn, and definitely not an early riser. I try not to schedule appointments before 10 a.m., and even that is a struggle sometimes.

The colours of autumn....it's autumn here now and the colours are beautiful, although without the bright vivid colours of colder climes.

my physios learnt not to offer me the 8am appointments ... 'that's for workers', I'd say!

My sister is weird - she wakes at 5.30 & goes to bed at 9.30. She answered an email at 11.0 one night & when I asked her why she was still awake I got a one word reply - Over-cafinated!

Served her right!

My getting-up time is ruled to a large extent by Mrs Steve. Tomorrow we visit her rellies so I'm kicked out of bed a disagreeable hour before what comes natural to me. Sundays, bed sheets are changed, so no lounging in bed for me. Wednesdays, she has an early exercise class and she wants to make the bed before she leaves, so that's me booted out unsuitably early. There are frequent other tribulations. Bejaysus, life is hard...

After over 25 years in the armed forces, and with operational tours in "warm and sunny spots", I have become a morning person. During hot weather, we worked from 0630 to 1330 hours, with occasional breaks for coffee, and snoozed the afternoons away -- unless someone sent up a balloon.

I am thoroughly incapable of making a bed to Mrs Steve's satisfaction. I try, God I try. But I always return to find the whole thing redone. It's the same with plumping up the cushions on sofas. She cannot be persuaded that the classy smoothness of her handiwork is immediately undone as soon as someone inhabits these items of furniture. I can't iron either. I know a woman who irons men's boxer shorts.

I am positively not a night person, as I wilt if I stay up too late.

When I was very young, autumn was my favorite season.
Now spring is catching up to autumn as a favorite.

Although I'm definitely not a night person,
my nights are different since my sleep apnea diagnosis
and using a CPAP device.
Fortunately there are nose masks now
and my mouth is kept free of the airflow.

For apnea people who score less than 5 episodes per hour, a simple device that pushes the jaw forward and gives a better airway eliminates the need for a CPAC machine.

I had always been a night person, but since discovering sanity through keto, I am a morning person.

Maybe I was too manic to sleep and too depressed to wake up, before...
