No help here either, sorry. Maybe try posting a video to reddit, they have a few places you could try, like TipOfMyTongue, or a punk/alt music subreddit

I played that sequence of notes thinking it might have been something christmassy from Bing Crosby And The Andrew Sisters, but it didn't jingle any bells.

Sorry for sullying the pristine blues and folk atmosphere of Mudcat with a request to identify a very loud, very raw rock or alternative rock song I vaguely heard at the supermarket. It's bugging me.

I'll know the name of the solo artist or rock group when someone here kindly identifies it. The singer is loud, aggressive, raucous, maybe punk, reminds me of Iggy Pop's very over-the-top personality. I suspect it's a UK artist or band. I couldn't hear any lyrics of the song.

I'm also sorry that I can't give you an ABC Notation file because I don't know how to do that.

The intro is repeated a couple of times, and it is a very, very loud, very raw, deep electric bass guitar which sounds more like the roaring of a muscle car or a big electric saw grinding through a big tree. I have tried to recreate the intro in a music notation programme. I probably didn't get it quite right.

The pattern of note lengths are the same for each of the four bars of the intro, and then the four bars are repeated: a quaver/eighth note, a minim/half note, a quaver rest, a crotchet/quarter note. The time signature is 4/4. I've noted it on the treble clef for simplicity.

The notes are:
Bar 1: G above middle C, high G, a quaver rest, high E.
Bar 2: G above middle C, high A, a quaver rest, high E
Bar 3: G above middle C, high B, a quaver rest, high E
Bar 4: G above middle C, high C, a quaver rest, high E

I would really appreciate any clues to the artist/band name which might help me to narrow it down. It's not in my album collection. I know that for sure, otherwise I would trawl through it and put myself out of this desperate misery of knowing-but-not-knowing the answer.

I thought Mudcatter punkfolkrocker might know but a search of his posts shows he hasn't been on Mudcat for over a year.

Thanks in advance,
Helen

Also I have a MIDI file of my attempt to replicate the tune.

Thanks gillymor. I'm more worried that when the tune is eventually identified, my totally inept attempt at trying to replicate it gets me laughed out of town. :-(

Thanks, GUEST,Cnd. I'll keep trying to figure it out.

Listening to motorcycle rev-heads on the nearby highway as they rapidly change up gears, four times in quick succession, with that guttural roar - the intro sounds very similar. I'm not sure if that helps.

If I had heard the song somewhere other than in a noisy supermarket I would probably have been able to identify it more easily.

I think it would help if you could make suggestions of deeper-voiced male rock singers with attitude.

gillymor's reference to the wonderful Ian Dury is good, but his voice isn't deep enough.

I'm trying to think of male singers or rock bands who have a similar style of rock. The band Alice in Chains fits the criteria, Loud, aggressive, driving rhythms, musicians/singer with an in-your-face attitude. Stone Temple Pilots is another band which springs to mind.

Or in the style of Billy Idol - Rebel Yell

I don't know if this helps but after the repeats of the first four bars, I think the next four bars which are also repeated are the same but with a run up the scale in chord notes from the low note to the highest note in each bar, then the singing begins after that. I think.

I suspect I'm going to have to set up camp in the supermarket until they play the song again. It would have been easier if Hubby's hearing was a bit sharper, because he would have picked it straight away or at least identified the band or singer.

I don't think I said it initially, but I suspect the song is at least 20 years old, i.e. older than most of the workers at the supermarket, so if I had asked they would have said, "It's a bit old, I wasn't even born then" and looked down their young adult noses at the little old lady bothering them with useless questions. :-D

Thanks for the suggestions, GUEST,Phil d'Conch.

Neither song is the one I am looking for, but we might end up with a bunch of songs with electric guitars mimicking motorbikes and racing cars, so it might be a fun list anyway. :-)

Thanks OldPossum. It's a good suggestion , but that's not the song. It doesn't have the rock beat behind it. Well, not in the first part of the song anyway.

Unfortunately I couldn't hear the rest of the song in the supermarket with other noises masking it.

Someone suggested I could ask at the supermarket but my description of the song is too vague, and they probably use the Hey Google playlists and would have no idea what it was anyway.

I'm going to wait until I hear the song again, somewhere, sometime and then update this Mudcat thread. I expect you will all laugh me out of town when you compare the actual song with my inept descriptions of it. :-D

Yes cnd, a very powerful electric bass intro, but I know that song well so I know it isn't the mystery song.

A good to add to our list, though. :-)

Hey NightWing, thanks heaps!!

I did try to learn how to convert tune notation to ABC but I was a bit confused.

The MIDI file needs to be converted in the *listeners' brains* into a growly, deep, electric bass with attitude. It sounds too sweet and pretty in the treble clef. :-D

As I said above, the first four bars are repeated, then four more bars are repeated, but in the second variation the notes run up through the chord notes from the low to high note. I'll have a go at doing it in ABC but I seriously suspect it might be a while before the mystery song is identified.

I might have found the mystery song:

Iggy Pop - I wanna be your dog

I was fairly sure it was either Iggy Pop or Billy Idol, although I checked the soundtrack of the Trainspotting movie as well.

I finally found a few versions of The Stooges with Iggy Pop singing the song I Wanna Be Your Dog.

I don't remember how and when I first heard it, but back then in the late '70's I was living in shared houses with other uni students and everyone had different tastes in music so it was an interesting way to discover new music.

It's also possible that I heard it when I worked in the local public library when we started building a music collection to loan out. The Acquisitions Librarian had an interesting, eclectic taste in a lot of new music coming out.

I'm interested to know how well or badly my description of the song fits the actual song. It's very difficult to describe a song without the melody and the lyrics.

You can be honest. I can take it. :-D

No need to apologize, Helen. After all, "Sex and Drugs and Rock and Roll are very fine indeed".

I played that sequence of notes on an electric guitar with fuzz but it didn't ring any bells.

Helen, if you can read the dots (and it appears you can?), you can learn ABC easily. As in 5-30 minutes.

You can find a good brief description of ABC at John Chambers's <http://trillian.mit.edu/~jc/music/abc/doc/ABCprimer.html> and the official website describing abc completely is at <https://abcnotation.com/>. It has links to LOTS more info, including several YouTube videos for beginners. (I haven't seen them, so can't comment on their quality.)

If I've understood you correctly, below is the ABC for your intro. I also dropped it into a notation program, listened to it, and didn't recognize it. But if I've misunderstood you, then that would obviously be the case.

%abc-2.1
X:1
T:Unknown Rock Song
M:4/4
L:1/8
Q:1/4=150
K:G treble

Gg4ze2 | Ga4ze2 | Gb4ze2 | Gc'4ze2 |

I've also dropped it by an octave so it has fewer notes on ledger lines. This is not necessary, just my own preference. This also has the effect of making the ABC be slightly shorter: about 8 characters?

BB,
NightWing

The Billy Idol and introductory powerful electric bass makes me think of Smoke on the Water - Deep Purple

I'm just refreshing this thread because the mixed up dates might make it difficult to see that:

From: Helen Date: 18 Nov 23 - 02:30 AM - please see the link in that post.

"I might have found the mystery song: Iggy Pop - I wanna be your dog"

And I've asked for honest opinions of how well or otherwise I managed to describe the song:
