Subject: Haywire Mac McClintock From: Jon Bartlett Date: 17 Dec 23 - 07:35 PM I'm writing a piece about Haywire Mac. He was not only a songmaker ("Big Rock Candy Mountain" among others) but he was also a writer, and a particularly good one. He was a railroad switchman for many years, and wrote a number of stories, true or otherwise. I've managed to find five of them, in a magazine called RAILROAD MAGAZINE. In total I've identified 22 stories of his in RAILROAD MAGAZINE, but can't find a library or archive which has a full set. Are there any mudcat railroad buffs out there who can help me? Subject: RE: Haywire Mac McClintock From: Mark Ross Date: 18 Dec 23 - 02:38 PM I have spotted a few pieces in The Industrial Worker, a publication of the Industrial Workers of the World, that were signed "Mac", which I think were were written by McClintock who was an IWW delegate back then. I found them in bound volumes of the paper at the University of Montana Library in Missoula,Montana. Mark Ross |

Subject: RE: Haywire Mac McClintock From: Jon Bartlett Date: 22 Dec 23 - 03:00 PM Thanks Jim, Thomas and Mark. Yes, I found the Cowboy Museum and they have five issues with articles by Haywire Mac, which they very kindly downloaded. Fabulous stories! It's the rest of the 22 I'd like to see. A Fellow Worker has sent me his Wobbly material, including Mac's IWW membership card. Great thanks to you all! Jon Bartlett |

Subject: RE: Haywire Mac McClintock From: Joe Offer Date: 22 Dec 23 - 08:35 PM Damn! Every time I'm in Oklahoma City, I keep meaning to go to that cowboy museum. It looks so interesting. The banjo museum looks interesting, too. I'll do 'em next time I drive Route 66, but I'll stay in nearby El Reno and eat onion burgers and Coneys with slaw. When I was researching for copyright permissions for the Rise Again Songbook, I had trouble with songs that had connections to Harry McClintock. Word has it that the McClintock estate vigorously defends their claim to rights for a number of songs that may or may not have been written by McClintock, so we'd be better off just to pay the royalties and buy a license, whether or not the claim was legitimate. But there are a lot of songs attributed to McClintock where I question attribution. -Joe- |
