The next song is parody on "The Moonlight's Fair Tonight Along the Walbash".
We called it "When the Ice is on the Rice" and that goes:
When the ice is on the rice along the Yalu,
And the Chinaman is looking down on you,
You can bet your ass I won't be there beside you
I'll be sitting on my bum in Uijeongbu.
In Uijeongbu.

Transcribed from the singing of John Frushour recording January 13, 2004.

WHEN THE ICE IS ON THE RICE

When the ice is on the rice in Southern Honshu
And the Sake in the cellar starts to freeze
And you whisper "Sweet Ojosan, I adore you"
Then you're getting just a sukoshi Nipponese.

When you're dancing to the strains of "Tanko Bushi"
And you're speaking Arigato, 'stead of please.
And you answer telephone with "mushi-mushi"
I sink maybe you are going nipponese

As you sit upon tatami sipping sake
And the cold wind's whipping 'round your knees.
And you're munching on some gohan and osembi
Then you're surely getting takusan Nipponese

When you start spending yen like it was money,
'Stead of flinging it like paper in the breeze.
And you think everything in English sounds so funny
Then, my lad, you're truly Nipponese.

As happy hour wound down, VMA-151 sang us a warning
about getting too comfortable with the ladies in Iwakuni.

When the ice is on the rice in Southern Honsu,
And the sake in the cellar starts to freeze,
If you whisper to your josan, I ador you,
Then you're getting just sukoshi [little bit] Nipponese.

When your skipper misses muster in the morning,
And the XO's got an undefined disease,
If the pilots are all medically restricted,
Then you're getting just sukoshi Nipponese.

When the benjos [sewers] start to thaw in Asian springtime,
If the smell from them seems pleasant on the breeze,
It's time to write and tell your gal in San Francisco,
She's been replaced by your sukoshi Nipponese.

To the tune of 'Galway Bay'

When the ices is on the rice upon the Yalu,
And the Chinaman is creeping up on you,
I'll send you a pretty little postcard
While I'm singing on my arse in Wi John Bhu.

WHEN THE ICE IS ON THE RICE
(On the Wabash Far Away)

When the ices is on the rice in O'Misawa,
And the saki in the cellar starts to freeze.
Then I'll speak "Dozo" to my little darling,
As I cuddle to my S'Koshi Nipponese.

When the ice in on the in Furamaki, [sic]
I'll get taksan dingy-dingy, hit the sack.
And I'll stagger from her bed back to the barracks,
Singin' Sayanora, chesei baby, I'll be back.

When the ice is on the rice up on Hokkaido,
And the Ainu's in their huts hibernate.
I'll say gomenasie to the local josans,
And huddle with my Fura-maki mate.

When the ice is on the rice in Asamuchi,
And the water in the hot baths starts to steam.
I'll say Arigato as she jumps in beside me,
And helps to fill my Japanese dream.

When the ice is on the rice in Urmagawa,
And the saki in the cellars starts to freeze.
I don't want to go back to sunny California,
I just want to stay here with my Nipponese.

The name Yung Dung Po reminds me of a little ditty I learned over there.
It is to the tune of "On the Banks of the Wabash" It goes like this:
"When the ices is on the rice beyond the Yalu,
And the Chinese come a-creeping 'cross the snow.
Don't you look for me GI to be there to help you;
I'll be sitting on my ass in Yung Dong Po..."

"Ohitose" is a typo for Chitose on the Japanese island of Hokkaido, site of a post-World War II USAF base.

During the Korean War it was used mainly for support, maintenance, and logistics.
