My friend Richard SArgent, who runs a Nic Jones website, tells me that he had contact from someone called Clare at Mudcat who had TAB for Canadee-i-o. True? If so, is there any way I can get a copy, please?

I know Dan McKinnon from Dartmouth sings that one. He has met and talked to Nic Jones, who has no problems with Dan singing it.

Dan shows up here once in a while. Perhaps he can help.

I remember a very old man, way back in the 60s whose party piece was Canada-io, the same song that Nic Jones recorded. Does anybody know where it came from??.And why should Nic have any difficulty with someone else singing it?

Canadee-i-o is a traditional song. There are several copies of the broadsides in The Bodleian Library, at Oxford. If you look at those it has a variety of names including Canada-i-o and Kennedy-i-o.

It's not the song, it's the very distinctive guitar arrangement. For the the rest of the story just do a Mudcat search on Nic Jones, the whole story has been discussed many times. Perhaps someone will do a clicky.

I notice that no-one is hankering to copy the dreadful rendering of this song by Bob Dylan.

I saw a Nic Jones website with bio and info by Mike Ravens. He mentioned a short transcription book with about a half dozen tunes. If anyone has info on this (or a contact), I would be very interested in obtaining a copy. Thanx, Rick rgbnalaska@aol.com

AK Rick,

The book you want is out of print. It can be borrowed from Central Library in Manchester though. (The publishers are across the road).

If thats too far, all I can say is try living nearer Manchester.

Mike Raven has several books with Nic Jones' material in. The best is "English Folk Guitar", which has tablature for "Don't you be Foolish, Pray", "Sir Patrick Spens", amongst others. The book can be got from Mike Raven direct. I don't have the details to hand, but you can get there from the Nic Jones website at http://www.sarcon.demon.co.uk/engfolk/21/frames/nic_jones.htm

Anyone know the tuning and/or tablature for "Courting is a Pleasure"?

I found and saved this a long time ago, I don't know where ( sorry ). It is all the work of someone else

Canadee-i-o
(Trad. arr. Nic Jones)
Tabbed by: unknown

CAVEAT: This is not a note-for-note transcription, but will provide the basic riffs and chords for the piece, and you can then smooth out the rough parts yourself. Also, I haven't figured out the percussive effects i.e., the rhythmic tapping. I don't know if he's tapping on the guitar body, strings, or floor. Maybe someone who's seen him play can answer that. I will say, however, that it is a very difficult piece to learn and play with any semblance to Nic's inimitable style.

Guitar tuned CGCGCD (low to high). (Note: on the recording, Nic actually tunes down to BbFBbFBbC, where `Bb' denotes B flat.)

Chords: (Note: I have no idea what the proper chord names are, so I mostly identify them by random labels. Perhaps someone can supply the correct names.)

I've been trying to find the tune source for many years. I believe this is one that Jones has no recolection of. Maybe it's entirely his, maybe adapted from elsewhere.

If anyone has any inkling of his source I'd be very interested to know.

Just picked up a CD by Ian Benzies (ex lead singer of Old Blind Dogs) and thought I'd mention that he does an excellent version of Canadi-i-o. Can't remember the name (it's out in my car) but he has two solo CD's (that I know of) and they are excellent - highly recommended!

I think Nic plays this in standard tuning in G with a capo on fret 2. I've just worked it out but I heven't tabbed it yet. If you're interested in the tab please email me and I'll send it on when done.

PS let me know if you've got 'tabledit'

Hmmm, maybe he does now. I've been told that Nic Jones only uses standard tuning these days but the way he *used* to tune for Canadee-i-o was (low to high) CGCGCD, though on the recording he seems to tune down to BbFBbFBbC.

According to this site,, there are sufficient differences between Dylan's arrangement and Nic's for them to be considered separate.

In the early 80's, my dad found an entire book full of tabs and lyrics of many of nic jones' songs in a library. This includes 'lord marlborough', 'dont you be foolish pray', 'the butcher and the tailors wife' and around 30 more. He photocopied a good majority of the book but we have no idea what it was called or where it came from. It even came with an in depth discussion about the different tunings for different songs and picking methods. I was wondering if anyone had heard of this and could shed any light on the matter?

The bould Mick O'Grady has recorded the song on his CD titled "The Long Distance Kid" This is the first time I have heard the song so cannot vouch for the air. You can contact Mick at 353-(0)86-3472247
There are some lovely songs on this CD, sung in a lovely easygong style.

You know, it's been ages since I listened to this but I'm pretty sure the original version on 'Penguin Eggs' is in Bb. That makes the tuning (Bottom to Top) Bb: F: Bb: F: Bb: C.

The tab above seems ok. Try this tuning on a 12-string. Only blue whales will hear you.

I call it 'Pipe Major Leadbelly' tuning.
