Hey, we used to have great "discussions" at the dinner table, and I'd often get up three times during a meal to get a book to prove my point. My kids always accused me of cheating. Better to argue from a point of ignorance, they thought.
Now my daughter works in a library, and I can't win an argument with her any more, not ever. The boys are still kinda dumb.

"Your mileage may vary" is in itself shorthand for "That's my opinion, and not yours, but you're not gonna change my opinion and I'm not gonna change your opinon, so let's just agree to disagree, okay?" or words to that affect

Way up there, Snuffy asked about usage. If you come back, Snuf, YMMV was in an answer to my question about 80/20 bronze guitar strings, and it referred to how long certain ones might last and how pleasing or not-pleasing certain ones might be. The writer cited his experience and said, YMMV, which I now take to mean, "Don't expect your experience to exactly duplicate mine."

I'm learning all kinds of things in Mudcat Station. :-)

Snuffy, I think canoer has the right of it. Originally YMMV is someting you find on the sticker price label on the window of a new car. Here, and I imagine elsewhere, the sticker always has the projected milage numbers in BIG numbers, with the caveat underneath -- "your milage may vary" or " actual milage may vary by 10%" or something similar.
