Okay, thinking about next week already. We need to talk about time. Is 7:30 still okay? It DOES make problems for 'Catters in Australia. Discussion, please.

Here's a suggestion for theme of at least the first go-round of songs: WIVES, HUSBANDS, SIGNIFICANT OTHERS. That's general enough to allow love songs, My-man-(or woman)-Done-Left-Me Blues, Bad Wife-or-Husband Songs, and who knows what else? Again, discussion, please.

I posted an idea in the other on: spring flowers, pretty broad, could be combined with the other idea. I also put a link to a thread from last spring in the other thread about what we all had coming up in our gardens last spring.

Micca, Jon, anyone in OZ, i.e. Alison, Alan etc. PLEASE let us know what times/days would be good for you. We want to hear you, too, without waking up your households!

Thanks!

My Wives/Husbands theme could well wait for another week. But I like it because it's so general that A LOT of good songs can fit.

I will say, for my own part, that finding songs about spring was fairly difficult. I HAVE found one that I can sing and with a straight face maintain that it's about spring flowers, and wasn't in the Spring Songs collection we did, but I might just be stretching a little to do so.

Time wise the current time is as good as any for me. I play pool on a Sunday night and don't get home until about 11pm my time (6pm EST) anyway.

The room is available 24hrs a day every day (short of Tripod or Hearme themselves going down) and there is no reason why UK members could not start something of a bit earlier and let the US members join in/ start again later...

I know that Dave (TAM) could not get in and it looked to have something to do with the Human Click banner I had placed on the page. I have removed that, at least temproraly until I know the situation but if anybody else was having trouble, it may be worth trying again.

I have made another Hearme resource available on my web space at http://members.tripod.co.uk/jonbanjo/rooms/rooms.htm. This provides access to 4 of hearme's internet wide channels (which are unfortunately inabited but idiots some of the time) as well as a facility to set up a room that is private within my domain (in this case Tripod.Com). If 2 or more peple agreed on a room name, they could use this to have a reasonably private (nothing is totaly secure) conversation.

If it comes to having a room that needs a name, two names just popped into my head: LISN2ME and MUDPUPPY, thus referring obliquely to HearMe on the one hand and Mudcat on the other, without actually using either of their names, which might be objectionable.

Dave, in case I have caused confusion, the room for the singaround remains the same and is private to that page and has only been publicised to Mudcatters. The other bit is an additional facility that people are welcome to use.

I suggested a garden theme, to include anything found in a garden, not just flowers. (Do trees count?) Lots of songs about thyme, dirt and bugs, too. The nice thing about the topic is it forces me to go out and find some songs I don't already know.

I'm still mucking about with the mic....I might message one of you to test with me another time. And this Sunday, I'm taking Karen out for her birthday so I'll not be around. I certainly enjoyed everyone last Sunday,,,it was quite a crowd. But just to clear up young Meebo's question, "What the heck is Spring flowers"............

Meebo, spring is a season of the year coming between the cold of winter and the heat of summer. It is a time when a young man's fancy turns to thoughts of the opposite sex. When you have these thoughts this year, try to DO something about them. Preferably with a girl. Or even a guy. Just don't do anything alone. And if you do, don't tell us about it.

Flowers are the colorful little bits you may have seen on plants. Actually, they are the means of reproduction for many plants in the wild through "pollination." You need to give it a try. Not with a plant.

So Spring Flowers would be a nice topic. Do you understand now? Just trying to be helpful.

Great conversation guys... keep it up!!!

Here's my 2cents about the topics. One of the fun parts of hosting a jam or song circle around here is you get to pick the topic. The topic is simply a way to get the juices flowing and avoid hearing the same songs over and over again. It's nice if you can sing at least one song on topic, then you are free to sing whatever you want. Since the host suggested the topic we also always know that at least one person will have a song that fits (usually the host attends).

The topics "spring flowers" and "husbands and wifes" are pretty close to the topics we have had fairly recently so you may hear the same songs over again. That's fine since the song circle participants are changing from week to week. Either one is OK by me.

Wasn't there a thread on Song Circle topics fairly recently? My memory grows dim. :-)

Would the folks from the land down under like to change the time?

oops! I just re-read my last post. When I said around here I meant in the Washingto D.C. area, not on the Mudcat. Keep the creative juices flowing and I'm sure a great topic will emerge. Given the choice of the two on the table I'd go with Husband's and wives. Course if we do Spring Flowers I could get my kids to sing Little Bunny Foo Foo for use :-) It has flowers in it doesn't it?

Jon: I just visited your new room that connects to Hearme's online channels. What are these things? I have been going to the Hearme.com website and visiting their lobbies, but it requires that additional software be downloaded. You also have to register, but you get more features, and the ability to moderate the rooms, lock the rooms, etc. These seem just like our Mudcat rooms but open to everybody. Where are they on the Hearme.com site?

Mbo,

If you're desperate for a song of spring flowers, check out poet Bliss Carmen (b. New Brunswick, mostly worked in New England or NYC or somewheres thereabouts) and make up a tune. His verse is nearly always a very simple meter. He died long enough ago that most of his stuff should be public domain. He wrote a whole volume about April this and thats. If you want some to read, e-mail me. Many of them are short. He writes about May as well. Love and flowers come in to a lot of his stuff. Maybe you'll start a whole new genre of dead-poet-folk!

How long does Hearme Run for?
I wouldn't be available until after 8:00pm.

Well how ya' doin' there Slick? Got your Voice Mails and the folks will be glad you signed up for HearMe....She does a great job gang.

The time is EST US or Mudcat Time...and that's what your're on too. Come in anytime and things generally don't break up for several hours...or until the last dog is hung, but when they start with the licking, its time to go...except Meebo who seems to enjoy watching the dog.

There's a text chat, Bonnie, so if ya don't want to sing, you can still make comments about whoever does! Hoep you make it in there and that everyone else gets to ehar your picking and YOUR tunes...beautiful!

Maybe it is a little early for spring flowers. How about songs about dogs? Or locale-specific songs, i.e. I'm Just An Okie From Muskogee???*BG* Or, songs in another language?

Jon,
Does the HearME site being open 24/7 mean I can sneak in when no one's around and try to figure out how to work my mic? I'm starting to get the hang of this place(see? my kids showed me HTML :-)), but the mic thing is a whole new dimension. When I tried to test my "audio configuration" Sunday I crashed and hence my sudden departure. Any quick hints for a newbie who's PC is only a 486?
Also, I like the idea of starting the sing for UK folks a bit earlier- I'm in US central time, but my darlin's in Edinburgh and he works days, so past midnight is a bit much for him on a Sunday.
Thanks!
Karla:-)

Sabra, I have just visited the Hearme FAQ page (there is a link from my page) and I'm not sure how you are going to get on as the minimum spec says: "Pentium 100 MHz or faster (200 MHz recommended)". Just got to try it and see what happens.

In answer to the Mike check questions, apart from the suggestions which have already been mentioned, if you want to try out a live chat, the general chat room that can be accessed from the link I gave earlier in this tread is occupied most of time and could be used for that sort of test. One word of warning though, there are some very pleasant people who use the general chat but in the few vists I have made, I have encounted foul language, racisim, people who lock the mike up for ages... at the moment, it seems as if the abusers are driving the decent people elsewhere at certian times.

Jim, I can't really answer where they are and if they can be accessed from the full hearme.com program. With my type of set up, hearme uses a concept called channels. Any channel that starts with # has an internet wide scope and any other name has a domain wide scope. The first person to ue a name, creates the channel and others then join it. As an example, if you used the make a room option on my page and keyed in #General Chat, you would enter the internet wide room for general chat.

As you will have read, the lack of a moderator does cause problems and the only option you have is to choose to ignore certain people. It could even happen (unlikley)on my page for the use of Mudcatters and there would be nothing I could do about it except either change the location of the page, publicise the change here and hope that the abuser didn't find it or alternatively use an agreed named room.

2 other comments. Firstly Jim, for completeness, on the page that is used for the sing around, I do not use a named channel. The effect of this is the room is "private" to that web page.

It looks as if Dave (TAM) can now get in and that it was nothing to do with the Human Click banner and I am considering restoring it and certainly would if we ever experienced any trouble. For those who may not know, Human Click is not just an advert, it can be used for live communication with a user as well as providing a link to email me at other times. Also it can be set to alert me whenever anybody accesses my page and provides me with the users IP address, the referer, what browser they are using...

The subject of my lock program cropped up a couple of times and details can be found athttp://www.mudcat.org/thread.CFM?threadID=16841

Please note that my disclaimer is in no way a suggestion that I believe the software is unsafe. I would not put anything I believed was harmful out and I use this program. It is just an attempt at covering myself in case anything went wrong - I try to be helpful but can not afford to be sued for it...

Also, I try to help people if they have problems using it but there is no way that I am able to offer proper technical support.

Well, here it is Tuesday PM, and seems to me it's time to finalize a theme for the first inning so that those who like to learn something special for the occasion have lots of time to do so. Let's go with Kat's suggestion of flowers, gardens, that sort of thing. I think that's what a couple of her posts boil down to. I can wait for another time for my suggestion of wives, husbands, significant others.

Inter alia, I intend to do Inch By Inch.

To give a little more time for our European friends, I personally intend to show up at about 7:00 PM EST. If nobody else shows up that early, I can always practice.

Bill D suggested this in last week's thread.

Bill:

That's a great Idea (hand hits head)!!!! People can start the sing at anytime on Sunday!!! It's not like we would be showing up while the host is still in the shower, the newspapers are on the couch, and the dishes are in the sink. The virtual song room is always spotless and ready for company!

So If anyone wants to get going before 7:30 EST more power too them. Just announce when you will be starting in the list!

The Return - by Ferron
The Seine
1/2 of Irish Lullaby

I'd like to figure out a way to rotate more evenly without wondering who is next. Maybe we could each be assigned a number, no matter when we come in, then sing whenever we get to that number each time? Not sure if that would work any better, either, though.

Did we come up with a subject for next time?

Subject: Lyr Add: LITTLE BOY (Mike Settle)
From: Allan C.
Date: 06 Mar 00 - 07:47 AM

After threatening the total destruction of my modem and contemplating horrible things I could do to my server, I was finally able to tune into the hearme sing about 45 minutes after I began trying.

Let me tell you, it was worth it! What an amazing bunch of folks we have among us! Not only that but they are so wonderfully diverse in their musical selections that there is a surprise at every turn. It was a perfectly enjoyable evening - well, at least for the most part. There were unfortunate problems to be had with microphones and with pushing that damned F9 button. And some of this sort of thing precluded our hearing the songs (or parts of the songs) of a few. But outside of that, It was wonderful!

I sang:

LITTLE BOY
by Mike Settle

When I was a little boy, my mother said to me,
"Watch the new born roses grow. It's a pretty sight to see.
You, my son, shall blossom as the flower below.
I will be your raindrops. You will be my rose.

Listen while I tell you of the beauty in the sky.
There's a home for angels on the clouds so high.
I must be an angel. In heaven I shall stay.
If you ever need me, I'll hear each word you say."

Now her raindrops fall no more. Who will take her place?
Will I live to blossom full or wither into space?
Many times I wonder on the clouds above
Is it my dear mother who showers me with love?

When I was a little boy.

_____________________________________

I post the lyrics here because I had forgotten to include the middle verse when I sang it and you should really see how it is supposed to go.

I also sang "Seven Golden Daffodils" (VERY old trad.) and "Tell Old Bill". The latter of the two was, I believe, collected by Carl Sandburg.

I did Sweet Thyme by Dave Webber.

Kat, it does seem that some folks got to sing more songs than others, probably because others passed - but I left after an hour, and I don't know what happened after that.

If someone makes a list, (I've been doing a teeny Excel spreadsheet to keep track) I'd suggest going through it once. Add somebody on the bottom if they come in late, but catch those who don't sing fist time on the second. Just an idea.

I thought I'd already posted this question, but I don't see it, so I'll try again.
I was on a borrowed computer last night listening to everyone. Since the computer didn't have a mic, I could only listen. Question is... What kind of mic is needed to join in? I did find out they've got this little bitty thing on a stand the size of a coat hanger that came with the computer. Is that enough, or would I need to get another mic? If if makes any difference, I would be playing an instrument and not singing (my voice is not great).

I have a chea[ie mic with a headpiece, so I just hang it on my head and speak/sing, etc. As far as I know I've sounded alright. For instrument playing be sure to download Jon Freeman's program for holding downt eh F9 button, hands-free. Others use their big toes, stplers, pencils and havy can of beans, but Jon's seems to work well and it is a service he kindly volunteered.

To find his program just write HearMe in the filter box at the top of the threads, thens et the date to 90 dyas. All of teh HearMe threads will come up, then you can look through Jon's postings for it. I think he linked it into this thread, even, or the one just before it, for last Sunday, whatever the date was. Homeless:
I have one of those lightweight mikes, which I got with my Soundblaster sound card. It has a plastic base plate, a supporting rod about a quarter inch in diameter, and the microphone tip is maybe half an inch in diameter. I have been pleased with it.
I used to use a microphone I bought with a small (pocket-size) but excellent tape recorder. The mike, when bought with the recorder, was $50. It closely resmembles a pen, complete with pocket clip. I expect the actual microphone unit is about the same as that in the Soundblaster mike described above. When I got the Soundblaster with mike I switched, since I could leave the new SB mike plugged in and on my desk, rather than connecting and disconnecting the pen mike for use with the tape recorder. I believe that I get as good pickup with the SB mike as with the $50 pen mike, for what it's worth.

See, these are the kinda things I need to know for optimal performance! Thanks kat! I actually use a microphone stand, of my own making. Slightly ingenious, but it works. I always think that I'm too far away for anyone to really hear well, so I have a tendency to sing closer to the mike. I guess I'll back off...or at least someone help me with a sound test before the show. One must keep up appearances, um, sound quality, you know.

Always looking for ways to get more than one function out of a device it occured to me that a capo type clip attached to the bottom of a mike could hold the F9 button down. Since you would only need that button to be held while you were transmitting, both could be moved just out of range of the keys when not in use. Barbara mentioned some few posts back that my mike was cutting in and out and I spent the better part of the session bouncing back and forth. When I keyed my mike (by pushing the infamous F9 device) I got a message in that little box where the talk button is that 'playback device in use'. Did any one hear my dulcimer or was that after I cut out for the last time. Any info would be helpful in determining where my problems lie. Thanks....

Mbo--you are nearly always very clear, but sometimes "far away"
Banjer--I never heard your dulicimer, (which kind?)and never got a coherent word from you, kept cutting out.
kat is always clear as a bell, and always the right volume.
Jon F is usually too soft, but after I said something, he perked up, so I think it is his manner of speaking, rather than the mike.
Judy-O and Dylan, spot on.
LEJ was still scratchy even after he moved Waaaayyy back.
Bill D nearly blew out my eardrums on volume, but what a tone!
doestr, good quality, but sometimes a little soft.
JAB, usually OK.
Hardiman--too far from the mike.
That's all I can remember, what about me?

I went through the excersize of clicking on the box to adjust audio volumes throught the hearme site. It's at the bottom of the hearme window. It records and then plays back to you what you sound like. That really helped me set the volume levels.

You can sign on to the site and go through the process at any time. I think it retains the settings the next time you log on.

JAB

By the way. I use a Labtec AM252 NCAT mic that the kids got me for Christmas. I think it was about 12.00. It is about 10 times louder than the little beige mic that came with the computer. It works great.

(I did enjoy his 'Master's Bouquet', thanks Bill, hadn't heard that in ages it seems. Kat did indeed come through loud and clear, but her hubby Roger is after all a tech engineer for a TV broadcast station and I would expect no less from her **BG** JAB, I found that page on the site, but was afraid to try it in case it would 'mess up' the session. For the record, I sang "Banks and Braes of Bonnie Doon," by Burns. I loved the session, but decided I had to go get some bills paid after awhile. I've often been listening from the kitchen or whatever, and sometimes I just come in the room where Bill's participating, and listen for awhile, but this was the first time I asked him if I could sing too. The complaint was resolved in a very friendly manner but I still need to be careful at that time of day - wil try to remember to get a little closer to the mike though.
