Subject: Leather Britches From: Homeless Date: 04 Mar 00 - 12:24 AM I saw the lyrics to this tune once in a book in a library. When I went back for the book later to copy down the words, it was nowhere to be found... And the librarian claims that they never had the book. I've got a friend who plays the tune on hammered dulcimer, but wasn't aware that there were lyrics. Can anyone help me out? Oh yeah, the title might also be spelled "Leather Breeches" |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Leather Britches From: Homeless Date: 04 Mar 00 - 02:06 AM I don't recall any of the specific words, but the gist of the song was this Irish fellow during the famine wore leather britches all the time. At one point he was supposed to get everyone something to eat. Not being able to find anything, he took his pants off and made a soup from them, and served that. During/after eating, when everyone realized that he wasn't wearing his leather britches, and surmising what had happened to them, they were ready to lynch him. |

Having said that, I remember a similar song, but to a different tune.... My version has him lynched, not for boiling his trollies, but for making a profit in selling the soup he made from them.... LTS |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Leather Britches From: fox4zero Date: 04 Mar 00 - 02:50 AM My best recall is that leather breeches is an slang term for dried string beans. During the late 40's or early 50's there was a "hill-billy" recording by Little Jimmie Dickens of LB: I went a' huntin, saw a bear and shot him dead Went to skin him, found I'd shot the bull instead. CH:Leather breeches Gun went off and I was gone Buckshot couldn't hurt me Cause I had my leather breeches on. Another verse ended with "Farmer caught me in his melon patch" Regards to all Larry PARISH
