Thought that would catch your eye....

We've recently established a Celtic-influenced session here in Bergen. It's on every Wednesday at about 10 p.m in a pub called Finnegan's Wake (original) downtown. The atmosphere is unpretentious, but there is true enjoyment of playing, and the beer is free for musicians.

If your situated in the area, or maybe further down the West-coast (e.g. Stavanger), try to visit us sometime. This also perpetrates to "the Dubliner"'s crew in Oslo, whenever you visit our sunnt town. (You're hearing this John?)

I sailed on the Staatsrad Lehmkuhl during the Tall Ships race last year. The captain (Marcus Seidl?) is a big Irish music fan. I remember him describing the Dubliners (the real ones - not the pub staff!) playing on the foredeck of the ship in Bergen. One of the watchleaders on the trip was a Norwegian music student who sang shanties very well.

Come on John, I know you can do better than this. And if, as I suspect, most of you Norwegians or pretend Norwegians were absent from the recent song challenge check out the Moose story. I expect to hear the best being sung the next time I'm in the Dubliners (back bar et all).

Angun - I haven't been at the Harp session, when is it on? I would think the session in Finnegan's is something similar, the tunes are mainly Irish/Scottish/Shetland and the songs are "standards".

Hi, The session at The Harp( Bryggen) is almost every first Thursday in the month.Usually there is fiddle, uillean pipes, flute and bouzouki, and the tunes are mainly Irish and Scottish. As for the songs, it´s not singing everytime, but when it is it´s usually "standars".

I took a trip to western Norway this past summer and bought some great tapes of traditional Norwegian music at a souvenir shop. It is wonderful stuff. Why don't you play some of it at the pub so that it doesn't fade from view?

I'm sorry to say that I don't remember the name of the small town where I bought the tapes. It was a very small one on a fjord, and it had a souvenir shop for the tourists. Of course, that sounds like a good many towns on the fjords. The owners must be proud of their heritage, because they had a little tape player outside and where playing Norwegian music for all to hear.

One tape is called "Old Time Dance Music" and the other is "Music from Norway - Tussefloytelater" by Egil Storbekken. The first one is from Grappa Musikkforlag, and I guess Egil published the flute tape himself, because I don't see a company name on it.

My DH (dear husband) and I were taking a cruise on the fjords, and I would go up to the library of the ship, sit down in front of a huge window, put on my headphones, listen to this beautiful music and watch the scenery go by. It was heaven!
