ROGER MILLER's - ENGLAND SWINGS

(REFRAIN:) England swings like a pendulum do

Bobbies on bicycles two by two

Westminster Abbey, the Tower of Big Ben

The rosy, red cheeks of the little children.

Now if you huff and puff and you finally save enough money

Up - to take your family on a trip across the sea

Take a tip before you take your trip

Let me tell ya where to go. Go to England. (Refrain)

Mama's old pajamas and your papa's mustache

Fallin' out the windowsill, frolic in the grass

Tryin' to mock the way they talk, fun, but all in vain

Gapin' at the dapper men with derby hats and cane. (Refrain)

This is one of those songs that ought to hit the "ditch" list - it bores into your skull and keeps repeating, over and over again. Kind of like "It's a Small, Small World."

That's right Joe. However it's probably what makes it such a great song. I've yet to hear a Roger Miller song that didn't make me hum all day. They're so singable. Imagine not having "You Can't Rollerskate..." or "King Of The Road". Life would hardly be worth living.

On the Late Roger Miller's late TV show, he had Petula Clark as a guest. She came out with a grammatical correction: Eng-a-land swings like a pendulum DOES, Bobbies on bicycles, fuzz by fuzz...

Dick, I've not heard that one before, I love it.

BTW, I had the WORST crush on Pet Clark when I was 13.

Bert.

Dear Bert,

Know just what you mean about the Pet crush. At about the same age "Sign of the Times" and "Don't Sleep in the Subway" made my heart flip and my liver quiver with the most virulent form of puppy love.

And Dick, thanks for the anecdote. It's a keepah!

Brian Coll and the Buckaroos did their own version, called "Ireland Swings" to the same tune :)

I had a friend who wrote his own version that lampooned whatever institution of higher learning you may be attending. Something like...

Wesleyan (or your choice) swings like a dead lamb's tail, Progress moves like a pregnant snail, etc., etc.
