Subject: The Mudcat Park From: Caitrin Date: 03 Apr 00 - 05:09 PM Here's a lovely outdoor incarnation of the Tavern. We've got lovely weather here in Eastern NC...Sunny and warm, but not hot. I decided to share our climate with you all! Here at the park we've got green grass, a nice little stream, a few picnice tables, and even a slide and swingset. I've brought along fried chicken, biscuits, potato salad, green beans, pasta salad, and Authentic Caitrin Cookies (All homemade, of course!) for the picnic. Beer and soda are in the cooler by the picnic table, and there's iced tea right here in the pitcher. Everybody bring along your instruments and your lovely selves, and let's have a good time! |

Got my guitar, got my fiddle, got my chanter...oooooh....icea tea....must have iced tea...grab the guitar... And I love to live so pleasantly Live this life of luxury Lazing on a sunny afternoon In the summertime....(face it, there IS no spring in the South! **BG**) --Mbo |
Subject: RE: BS: The Mudcat Park From: katlaughing Date: 03 Apr 00 - 05:26 PM April Fool's Day came a day late. Yesterday it dumped 6 inches of snow on my car and yard. That is what passes for springtime here. Ain't no summertime, yet. Grrrrrr! |
Subject: RE: BS: The Mudcat Park From: Caitrin Date: 03 Apr 00 - 05:29 PM *L* Well, allow the park to bring the warm sunshine of the south to your computer, kat! :) Have some iced tea! |
Subject: RE: BS: The Mudcat Park From: Llanfair Date: 03 Apr 00 - 05:33 PM It's snowing here in Wales, too, so I'll pass on the iced tea, but the pasta salad sounds great. I've got my guitar, so let's get stuck in!!!!!! Hwyl, Bron. |

Subject: RE: BS: The Mudcat Park From: Coward Imposter 6 Date: 03 Apr 00 - 06:04 PM There's none so blind as cannot see... Given all the agro going around here - can you really not see that it's this sort of thread that is causing most of it??? This has nothing to do with music, is cliquey in the extreme, and annoys the hell out of lots of posters who are looking for musical threads. For the sake of the forum, is there no where else that you could take this sort of stuff? |
Subject: RE: BS: The Mudcat Park From: Ed Pellow Date: 03 Apr 00 - 06:18 PM I have to say that I agree with the above message. I've been here almost a year now, but am more a reader than a poster. I post messages when I think I have something useful to say or can point someone in the right direction. Otherwise, I read and learn. I totally disagree with the tactics that have been used by some people - personal attacks etc... But do they not have a point? This is supposed to be a forum to discuss folk / blues music. As such, threads like this are entirery inappropriate Just my views Ed |
Subject: RE: BS: The Mudcat Park From: Jon Freeman Date: 03 Apr 00 - 06:26 PM I run an ICQ Active List called Folk Chat (ICQ #62415725. The chat room is empty at all times except the Mudcat radio. It also has a news feature which can be used in much the same way as this forum. Perhaps some of this type chat would be more appropriate somewhere like that and ICQ can be run by most people (there are PC, Mac and Java versions). Unfortunately, my resources are limited and at best I can only keep it open between 6pm and 6am GMT and the longest I can keep the server running without having to reconnect is 3 hours but it might be worth considering trying as an alternatinve to using this forum. If it worked, perhaps somebody with better resorces than me could set a list up or alternatively take over my list. Jon |
Subject: RE: BS: The Mudcat Park From: Ebbie Date: 03 Apr 00 - 06:46 PM I haven't 'attended' the tavern or park, but what's the harm? There's more than music to bond with people whom you're getting to know and appreciate for their knowledge and uniquely helpful spirits. It's all part of the package. >br>What if I asked, Does anyone know the lyrics to Timbuctu Tassy? And the answer came back, NO. Period. That is not Mudcat, IMHO, even though it would be more efficient and take up much less bandwidth. Instead I can think when someone answers, Oh, yes, that's the guy who likes Tom Paxton and sings, what? Glowing Pickle, maybe. Let's not quibble about foibles. Let's just send in a monthly stipend to Max and feel free to enjoy the site. Ebbie |
Subject: RE: BS: The Mudcat Park From: Ed Pellow Date: 03 Apr 00 - 06:53 PM Ebbie, The 'harm' is that there's a real danger of 'chit chat' entirely taking over - and at present I can see it coming quite soon... Ed |
Subject: RE: BS: The Mudcat Park From: Mbo Date: 03 Apr 00 - 07:09 PM Spoil sports! Good, I have a whole lotta music garbage you can peruse over and not post to either. --Mbo |
Subject: RE: BS: The Mudcat Park From: GUEST Date: 03 Apr 00 - 07:35 PM Mr. Pellow, That argument has never made sense and is easily countered by a thread count at any given point in time. The ratio of thread types has not changed and while it bothers some people, including me, the music threads are plentiful and the BS is not obtrusive. If you find it obtrusive, do not read it and do not post to it. Though I find it often immature, I have read some very creative and wonderful tavern threads. They are simply not anything I am comfortable with personally. I also think that it has often been made very clear that the owner of this site enjoys the BS himself and we are likely to be the losers in a contest to have the BS quelched from this site. Just try yo go along and enjoy what you can. I set my filter many times to simply pull up lyr and help threads. I also trace my favorite threads. I am posting here anon, something I dislike, because of all the nastiness of late nad I don't want to be any more involved. I have seen many of your posts and believe you are a good man and I hate to see you become involved in a fight you cannot win. mw |
Subject: RE: BS: The Mudcat Park From: Mbo Date: 03 Apr 00 - 07:42 PM There! Got some music stuff up for all you starving music freaks! **BG** Check it out, and have fun! And Ed, this is not clique-ish, for heavens sake. We HAVE no cliques, but if you still believe in it, then whether you like it or not, you're a part of it too. And their ain't nothing you can do about it, either! You're in for life, but MAN whatta way to go, eh? --Mbo |
Subject: RE: BS: The Mudcat Park From: Amos Date: 03 Apr 00 - 07:42 PM Ed, with all due respect, I don't see any risk of BS taking over here. These folks who come to threads like the Park and the Steamboat and the Tavern are celebrating their own perspective of our common ground, rather than limiting themselves to academic discussions about songs and singers. They are not doing you any harm, especially since they always identify themselves and always mark their threads as BS, and so far have probably never exceeded 10% of the bandwidth on the Cat.
The other 90% of the threads are about songs, singers, techniques, instruments and events. More than enough to keep your plate full, if you don't go into the others, which are plainly marked. As for cliques, the BS threads are wide open for anyone who wishes to read them, join them, or shun them. This hardly qualifies as a clique -- more like a sport which typically attracts only people who enjoy it. |
Subject: RE: BS: The Mudcat Park From: Ebbie Date: 03 Apr 00 - 08:01 PM But don't you think, Ed Pellew, that the song threads ebb and flow? Certainly when a request or an addition comes up, there's an immediate lot of interest. I picture it like sitting with a couple of friends talking idly until someone says, Hey, enough of the chit chat! Let's make some music. But ten minutes later or an hour later the group will find itself chatting again. It's all part of the lovely package of bonding people. And no one has intimated that there is not enough room on Mudcat for both. I'll be happy to hear comments, agreeing or not. Ebbie :) |

Subject: RE: BS: The Mudcat Park From: Jon Freeman Date: 03 Apr 00 - 09:53 PM I am not sure whether Mbo was calling me a spoil sport or not but I will offer my personal feelings on this whole issue. I choose not to join in with or read the Mudcat Tavern type threads (it was a link Caitrin put up in the HTML thread that brought me here) but their existance does not bother me as I simply choose to ignore them. They do seem to be a cause of some of the tension round here and I was offering what I felt might have been a solution although I do wonder whether what appears to me to be chatter for the sake of chatter is really appropriate in this forum. Like most people, I do have my pet hates and one of mine is over use of religion. I have strong religious beliefs myself but dislike it when the forum appears to be used (or is in danger of being used) as a platform to preach religion regardless of the religion. I think Joe Offer expressed my feelings on this better than I can in another recent thread. My other one is when jokes for the sake of it are made in the middle of the more serious topics, especially the music threads as once one it starts, others appear to join in and the topic of a thread can dissapear. In what to me have been the worse cases, admittedly rare, I have seen jokes made before any attempt has been made to answer the original question. Anyway, overall I enjoy Mudcat and like a lot of the people who join in the threads I avoid and do some of the other things I have mentioned and when all said and done I am just another person who visits here because there is a lot of good things here but as others have commented, I thought I'd make my own feelings known. Jon

Subject: RE: BS: The Mudcat Park From: annamill Date: 04 Apr 00 - 01:01 PM Ed, and everyone else, this is not just a forum to discuss folk / blues music. It's a full blown community. This attitude has made it possible to really get to know each other, and to help each other when needed, and to learn..oh, so many things. Yes, sometimes we have problems, but we deal with them as a community. If you don't want to move in, but want to come over to shop, that's ok too. Just don't go into the conversational threads. That's all. It's simple. So enjoy shopping and if any of us who live here can help you now and then, we'll be more than happy to. Love, annap

Subject: RE: BS: The Mudcat Park From: Ebbie Date: 04 Apr 00 - 03:41 PM Ceitagh, I know a lot of fiddle tunes but I haven't heard The Butterfly. Sounds lovely. What beat is it? In any case, it sounds like it's a wonderful tune for a whistle or recorder or flute. None of which I play but I do like to listen. Nothing like music in the open air! |
Subject: RE: BS: The Mudcat Park From: ceitagh Date: 04 Apr 00 - 04:01 PM "The Butterfly" is fairly new to me too...it was one of the songs suggested to me when I asked for new whistle tunes a couple of weeks ago on the 'cat. If you search this page you should find it, as well as a lot of other great tunes! |
Subject: RE: BS: The Mudcat Park From: Caitrin Date: 04 Apr 00 - 04:07 PM In defense of the Tavern threads...I think they draw out a lot of the BS that might otherwise creep into "serious" threads. I would think that people who object to Thread Creep would be happy to have them here, in the interest of removing chit-chat from the musical topics. I would also argue that they are not "cliquey." The first time I set foot in this place a few months back, I was instantly made to feel welcome. On a more pleasant note...Canadee-i-o it is! I do love that one! One of my favorite bands that no one's ever heard of, Seven Nations, does a very nice version of it. And everyone, eat away! There's plenty to go around. |

Subject: Lyr Add: COME ALL YOU COLLIERS From: Mbo Date: 04 Apr 00 - 10:43 PM Let's rock! Come all you colliers Who work down in the mine From Scotland to South Wales From Teesdale to Tyne I'll sing you a song about the pound-a-week rise And the men who were fooled by the government's lies And it's down you go down below, Jack Where you never see the skies And you're working in a dungeon For your pound-a-week rise In 19 and 60, a few years ago The mine workers' leaders to Lord Robbins did go Saying "We work very hard, every day we risk our lives And we ask you here and now for a pound-a-week rise" Well, up spoke Lord Robbins, and he made this decree He said "When the output rises, with you I will agree I'll raise up all your wages, I'll give to you fair pay For I was once a miner and I worked hard in my day" The miners they went home, they worked hard and well Their lungs filled with coaldust in the bosom of Hell The output rose by fifteen, eighteen percent and more And when two years had passed and gone it rose above a score The miners they went, to get their hard-earned prize They asked Lord Robbins for their pound-a-week rise Robbins wouldn't give a pound, he wouldn't give ten bob He gave them seven and six and said "Now get back to your jobs!" So come all you colliers, take heed what I say Don't believe Lord Robbins when he says he'll give fair pay He'll tell you to work hard and make the output rise But you'll get pie in the sky instead of a pound-a-week rise! And it's down you go down below, Jack Where you never see the skies And you're working in a dungeon For your pound-a-week rise Yeah! --Mbo

Subject: RE: BS: The Mudcat Park From: Willie-O Date: 05 Apr 00 - 09:16 AM G'day all! As we Meebo, how come you know my whole repertoire? Thus I am once again reduced to liner noting case anyone don't know...Pound a Week Rise is by Ed Pickford, who also wrote the imaginatively titled "Workers' Song"; both recorded by Dick Gaughan: ...We've been yoked to the plow, since time first began Dum-de-dah, de-dum-ta-dum-dum...anyone looking for a guitar challenge try coming close to the riff Gaughan uses in this song. (Workers Song). Do not try to hard though or you will wear out your knuckles prematurely and feel compelled to donate your guitar to some socialist charity. I love these songs cause they are political without being squishy! Older, no wiser, Willie-O |
