Subject: Ireland this summer From: GUEST,Angun Date: 06 Apr 00 - 07:21 PM I´m going to Ireland in July - August, and I wonder if there is anyone who could recommend places to go for to hear Irish traditional music? Festivals, session...? Thanks in advance, Angun |
Subject: RE: Ireland this summer From: Brendy Date: 06 Apr 00 - 07:36 PM Get in touch with the Oslo crowd, Angun. There's a crowd of them go to Milltown Malbay every year without fail. You know any of them? Outside of that, just GO! Hit the West Coast (Clare, Galway, Sligo, Donegal, Kerry and Cork) and play it by ear. Have a ball. Brendy, jealous as shit, but heading over in Sept. |
Subject: RE: Ireland this summer From: GUEST,Angun Date: 06 Apr 00 - 07:41 PM Who is the Oslo crowd? I´m living in Bergen... Thanks for the advice Brendy!! Angun |
Subject: RE: Ireland this summer From: Brendy Date: 06 Apr 00 - 08:08 PM Some of them 'hang out' here. But do you know Erik (fiddle player), Harald (bouzouki), Slim, and others? My E-mail is orchardcounty@x-stream.no B. |
Subject: RE: Ireland this summer From: Noreen Date: 07 Apr 00 - 05:41 PM Hi Angun I would suggest Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann which this year is being held in Enniscorthy Co. Wexford over the week-end of August 25th - 27th, 2000. see the following site: http://www.fleadhcheoil.com/ Also see the Comhaltas site for more info on Irish traditional music: http://www.comhaltas.com/ Have a wonderful summer. We used to spend the summer following the music festivals round Ireland, until the children came along and life got more complicated (and expensive!) Regards Noreen {sorry I'm not HTML-literate + can't make these into real links- can anyone help? |
Subject: RE: Ireland this summer From: GUEST,Angun Date: 07 Apr 00 - 06:04 PM Thanks Noreen! I will check out that. Brendy : I don´t know any of them you mention. Do they live in Bergen? Angun angun@online.no |
Subject: RE: Ireland this summer From: GUEST,beachcomber Date: 07 Apr 00 - 06:14 PM Angun, If you are on the N25 in Ireland, between Cork and Rosslare/Waterford, check out the session at "The Marine Bar", Old Parish in West Waterford almost any night from June to Sept, or "Mooney's Pub" in Ring, also West County Waterford (The latter is home of "Danu" the new sensation among the traditional bands, Donal Clancy, Ciaran Galvin, Donnachda Gough and others) Bring your own "music" with you, you'll be made very welcome. Not your typical tourist trail venues either. Maybe I'll see you there. |
Subject: RE: Ireland this summer From: Gary T Date: 07 Apr 00 - 06:21 PM Noreen, read the thread titled "Mudcat FAQ - Newcomer's guide". It explains how to make links, different fonts, and all sorts of neat stuff. I recommend hitting the "trace" option next to it, so it will always be available on your personal pages (from the menu at the top) for reference. |
Subject: RE: Ireland this summer From: vindelis Date: 07 Apr 00 - 06:22 PM I wouldd also recommend the Connamara net, web page. I just type Clifden and get sent right to it. In fact go to Clifden itself, there is music in two or tree pubs every night. Just go there and ENJOY IT. |
Subject: RE: Ireland this summer From: GUEST,khughes@verio.net Date: 07 Apr 00 - 07:02 PM Hi Angun -- Matt Malloy's in Westport in Co. Mayo has sessions pretty much every night during the summer, I believe. They're always packed. The local players often go elsewhere just for that reason. McCarthy's in Castlebar (also Co. Mayo) used also to have good sessions. Kim |
Subject: RE: Ireland this summer From: paddymac Date: 07 Apr 00 - 07:44 PM If you're in Sligo, visit the "Sheela na Gig" down beside the river (I think on Bridge Street, but not sure). My understanding is that three of the lads in "Dervish" own the business. They were doing trad seisiuns every night but Wednesdays and Saturdays. It's not a large place, so better plan to get there by 8. The "Harp" down around the corner from the Town Hall has a fine jazz seisiun on Sunday afternoon and a trad seisiun on Monday eves. And check out "Shoot The Crows" down by the statue. |

Subject: RE: Ireland this summer From: dreoilin Date: 09 Apr 00 - 08:13 AM check out regular music sessions where musicians/singers are welcome to join in in "An Conair pub", Dingle , Co. Kerry, - it's on the Conor Pass Road. Singers session on wed. nights, set dancing Mondays. |

Subject: RE: Ireland this summer From: MartinRyan Date: 12 Apr 00 - 08:03 PM First week in July - Willy Clancy week in Miltown Malbay, County Clare. Just be careful who you hang out with! Regards |
Alison, sweetheart, how are you? My sister, at 46 ish!!, is still too young to be a granny, she reckons. But she loves it. Sort of puts her in a fairly priviliged situation: to be still reasonably 'young' while the grandchild is growing up. So she thinks it pretty cool. The child itself, when it comes, will have uncles and aunties not much older than it, and may very well end up with some that will be younger. Excellent, innit? All this will take place in and around Killough, Downpatrick direction, and I'm sure there's an extra seat or two if you fancied a good old 'head wettin'. How long are you going to be around for? I might stay over for a month or two and kill a few birds with the one stone. B. |
Subject: RE: Ireland this summer From: alison Date: 12 Apr 00 - 09:05 PM sounds great Brendy, there's supposed to be a good folk club Downpatrick direction....... I'll be home for about 5 weeks, from the middle of August to almost the end of September..... basically if you can see the Sydney Olympics on the TV ... I'll be at home..... anywhere other than Sydney... slainte alison |
Subject: RE: Ireland this summer From: Brendy Date: 12 Apr 00 - 09:26 PM Great folk club, Alison. My good friend Pat Connolly was always the driving force behind the club until his very untimely death at New Year 1999.It used to be upstairs in an old stone building. I think it is moved to a local hotel since. I used to have a link to it somewhere, but a quick search will find it. B. |
Subject: RE: Ireland this summer From: parsnips Date: 13 Apr 00 - 04:26 PM hiya starting from now there are weekends of irish music every week until christmas. you should especially go to the willie clancy week.good luck |
Subject: RE: Ireland this summer From: Seamus Kennedy Date: 14 Apr 00 - 04:00 PM Alison and/or Brendy, I'll be home from May 29th til June 11th. What's the name of the folk club in Downpatrick? I'd love to go there on of the nights. ALl the bets. Seamus |
Subject: RE: Ireland this summer From: Brendy Date: 15 Apr 00 - 11:13 AM Yo Séamus: Here's the link Downpatrick Folk Club. Have a good time!!! B. |
Subject: RE: Ireland this summer From: GUEST,Antóin Date: 15 Apr 00 - 01:56 PM You've already received very good advice. If you're in Cork City; An Spailpín Fánach, South Main St. usually has trad 6 nights a week. Some of these sessions have really high class musicians such as Séamus Creagh and Aidan Coffee. The Corner House, Coburg St., has sessions a few nights every week. If you're coming to Ireland in July and August it will be the height of the tourist season and a lot of music is put on especially for the visitors and can be of a very mediocre quality and not very authentic. Killarney Town is a good example; it calls itself the tourist capital of Ireland but is the worst place in the country for Irish music. Also, be aware that traditional music, even though very strong, is very much a minority interest in Ireland, so make sure you enquire as much as possible when travelling around, and say you're looking for real traditional music and not the tourist stuff. The Bord Fáilte tourist information offices are unfortunately not always the best source of information - they may be staffed by people who have no interest in trad and you may be guided only to the "official" tourist spots. Anyway, I hope you have an enjoyable holiday and that the weather will be kind. |

Subject: RE: Ireland this summer From: GUEST,Hendy Date: 15 Apr 00 - 04:13 PM While you're in Down, Alison & Brendy (and anyone else), try Fealty's Bar in Bangor (High Street) any Friday 10pm to 1am-ish. (The name on the building is still "Ormeau Bar".) Comhaltas actually seem maintain two sites incidentally - it's worth looking at both because they contain different (and occsionally contradictory) info especially under "branches." The other site is where Noreen stumbled by accident - i.e: http://cce.irish-music.net/ and this certainly has better links. |
Subject: RE: Ireland this summer From: tremodt Date: 16 Apr 00 - 09:03 AM what will the weather be like in mid june till mid july in Ireland warm perhaps ! |
Subject: RE: Ireland this summer From: GUEST,Finn Date: 16 Apr 00 - 09:05 AM Also if you're in Co Down here is a singing session Wednesday evenings in Newtownards at a big hotel/bar called The Judge or Judges or some such. More American folk than Irish traditional. |
Subject: RE: Ireland this summer From: Den Date: 16 Apr 00 - 01:18 PM Wasn't Bobby Hanvey involved with the Downpatrick Folk Club at one time. I seem to remember that they organized a wake and Bobby played the corpse, they had a coffin and all and Bobby greeted people sitting up in the coffin wearing a shroud. I am very envious of you all going over this year I hope to make the trip next year. Den |
