Subject: I believe it is called 'Africa Blue' ... From: Eluned Date: 08 Apr 00 - 12:01 AM ....and it is more blues or jazz than folk, but I don't know where else to ask. It was around for years as an "easy listening tune" and just as easily dismissed, until I heard some excellent female vocalist rendering it on an unknown radio station during a long late-night drive. The lyrics describe two beautiful young (black)lovers dancing together, and the words "africa blue" are in the refrain. Any takers? |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: I believe it is called 'Africa Blue' From: The Beanster Date: 08 Apr 00 - 02:14 AM Eluned, Have had no luck with this so far. Do you remember anything else about it? What year/era it's from? Any more of the lyrics? There are a few sites where you can search for a song with only lyric fragments but nothing turned up--maybe it's not a large enough fragment. Sorry I couldn't help...maybe it'll ring a bell with someone else here, though. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: I believe it is called 'Africa Blue' From: GUEST,charlton89@hotmail.com Date: 08 Apr 00 - 09:41 AM Maybe you are thinking about a jazz tune called "Afro Blue"? I think Coltrane covered it. I can't remember any lyrics other than afro blue in the refrain. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: I believe it is called 'Africa Blue' From: Sorcha Date: 08 Apr 00 - 10:08 AM "Afro Blue", recorded by Coltrane in 1963, written by Mongo Santamaria, available for purchase HERE . Didn't find any lyrics, except the ones here,, and I don't think they are the ones you are looking for. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: I believe it is called 'Africa Blue' From: Eluned Date: 23 Apr 00 - 01:19 AM thanks, Guest charlton, Sorcha; No, that is definitely not it. Guess I'll have to listen to a lot of Jazz stations for a while to find it again. The one thing that stands out is that the chorus or refrain describes a young couple, dancing through a beautiful starry night, full of the future. It's a lovely image. Thanks for trying, though. It probably dates back to something like the 60's, when my father was alive, so it was really a shot in the dark asking here, but one always has to try, doesn't one? |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: I believe it is called 'Africa Blue' From: dwditty Date: 23 Apr 00 - 11:54 PM "Afro Blue" was written by Oscar Brown, Jr. and M. SantaMaria. It appears on the Brown's Columbia release "Sin & Soul" which has been released on CD. Oscar Brown is probably my all time favorite. His lyrics are unbelievably tight. Highly recommend this CD for this song as well as many others. Usually categorized under Jazz vocals. I'm leaving in a few hours so I don't have time to transcribe. You're better off getting the CD, though. Enjoy. DW PS. Also look for the vinyl recording - Oscar Brown, Jr. "Tells It Like It Is" - another great one.(try ebay) |

I had resigned myself to never finding this song again, and you know how it is when the loveliness of a song strikes you, how it can't be forgotten, yet you've only heard it once. Thankyou, thankyou! I will go check it out at Borders; If they have it, I can test-listen to it on the spot. This is hopefully the song I have been seeking. happyhappy! |
