Subject: RE: Happy easter weekend....... From: SDShad Date: 20 Apr 00 - 05:03 PM Hey, -2C on April 19 might be worth it for 5 days off for Easter. So how's the job market in Iceland for folksinging network cooridnators, Skarpi? 2 1/2 days off for Easter here. The students and faculty get Friday and Monday off, but we lowly staff get Good Friday afternoon. Oh well. The best of Easter (in the Christian or Pagan sense), Passover, Earth Day, to all 'Catters, family, and friends. It's going to be a good one, I think. Chris |
Subject: RE: Happy easter weekend....... From: roopoo Date: 21 Apr 00 - 02:59 AM This Easter has started off very well: On Wednesday night I went to listen to "Messiah" performed by the local district choral society, and accompanied by 22 musicians from the Halle Orchestra. 700 people packed into Snaith Priory Church and it was magic! Last night in our local village church 23 of us sat around a table for a service of Holy Communion which was part of a Passover meal to celebrate the Last Supper. The Bishop of Doncaster presided. It was very moving. Whatever your religious persuasion - or even if you have none - I hope you have a wonderful weekend. Spring seems to have finally arrived here, (my peas are growing), and my husband out in Siberia tells me the temperature is permanently above freezing now. I hope you chocaholics all get your desires. 2 years ago I had Easter in Belgium - nyah! nyah! I love the way they decorate trees for Easter in mainland Europe, something I hope catches on here. Our local Somerfield supermarket has sort of done one as part of a promotion. There's hope yet. mouldy

Subject: RE: Happy easter weekend....... From: The Beanster Date: 21 Apr 00 - 03:45 AM Hey, Skarpi, quite the heat wave, huh? LOL At least your chocolate eggs won't melt in the hot Icelandic sun! Just a little memory...when I was little, my big brother used to tell me and my sisters this very elaborate story every Easter about how he one time saw the Easter Bunny sneaking around the house, filling up our Easter baskets. Said he was big and purple and fuzzy. I actualy believed him for many years...maybe I still DO believe him... hahaaaa Happy Easter to you Skarpi and to all!

Subject: RE: Happy easter weekend....... From: Billy the Bus Date: 21 Apr 00 - 10:57 AM Skarpi. You and I seem to be the most "outlandish" Mudcatters. You, from Iceland on your side of the world, celebrating spring, and, me from my Island, on the other side, celebrating autumn. May all between us live in peace thoughout the coming year. BTW - could someone please explain the meaning of the words "day off" and "holiday" - Am I correct in assuming they are days when one doesn't work? What a novel idea! I must see if the shop can order me one of those from the mainland....;^) And, as to food? All I have for Easter tucker is a 5lb lobster to chew my way through - it'd be boring without the (cold) hot-cross buns....;^) Aroha - Sam |
Subject: RE: Happy easter weekend....... From: Hollowfox Date: 26 Apr 00 - 04:54 PM OK, in the USA "day off" is a day when you don't go to work. Most folks have five working days and two days off in a work week. Often the days off are Saturday and Sunday. A holiday is established by legal authority, usually state or national, and may or may not involve thet closing of government agencies (post office, etc.), businesses, etc. The "bigger" the holiday, the more people will likely have the day off. More stores are closed on Christmas than on, say, Memorial Day (a national holiday to remember those who died in the armed forces). And then there are the holidays (frequently liturgigcal, originally) that ae celebrated, one way or the other, but the government doesn't declare them, and nothing shuts down. Halloween, Valentine's Day, etc. The American equivalent of the British word "holiday" is "vacation". |
