have brochure on this festival to be held 5-7 May at St. John's County Amphitheatre. Richie Havens will be the headliner. Was wondering if any of the Mudcatter's was going.

Dennis -- I will be there performing with my band, The Ashley Gang -- we'll be opening the show on Saturday, and playing Sunday as well. Mudcatter Harpgirl will be there as well as a festival volunteer. We'll be camping at Anastsia State Park for the weekend -- look for us!

Wish I had heard of this sooner, I may have been able to attend...I have one cassette of Gamble Rogers, how many did he make, does any one know? The one I was lucky enough to come by is 'Sorry Is As Sorry Does' on the Flying Fish label, #90362.
For those who don't know Gamble Rogers, he was a folk singer/comedian from the St. Augustine area in Florida. He gave his life in an effort to save some folks from drowning in the Atlantic Ocean off Florida's East coast. I learned of him after his demise. Perhaps some of the folks that knew him could tell the rest of us a bit more about him?

Good afternoon. I just found Mudcat thanks to my pal Tommy Bledsoe. What better way to start off than to mention the upcoming Gamble Rogers Memorial Festival we put on the 1st weekend of May in this peculiar and wonderful town of St. Augustine. I'm sure many of you knew - or knew of - this remarkable man. This October will mark the 10th anniversary of his last swim...... The website is: www.gamblefest.com The headliners this time are Guy Clark, Laurie Lewis, David Holt, Steve Riley & the Mamou Playboys, Spencer Bohren, Gove Scrivenor, etc. Also many great Florida performers (and other states). So check it out and cancel whatever plans you had made for that weekend! I have been here for 21 years - I used to operate Old Favorites Record Shop which might ring a bell with someone. And I actually currrently own Low Tide Records & Music (email: lowtide@islc.net) in Beaufort SC (my hometown) where I spend about half my town nowadays. I write a musical column there for The Lowcountry Weekly (sorry-no website yet). 1000s of LPs as well as the modern formats, so let me know what you're searching for. I'll also be at the long-running Florida Folk Festival Memorial Day weekend. Big fun. I have 2 CDs of my songs if anyone is interested. If you are someone I've lost touch with over the years, please speak up! Speaking of LPs, I once had a great one by Canadian songwriter David Wiffin and can't recall who I lent it to. If you have one you don't need, please let me know. Well, I'm eager to explore this mudcat thing so I'll shut up now.
David Dowling (Frogmore)

Where have I been? I did not know that Gamble Rogers had passed away. I saw him around 1982, in Wilkesboro, N.C. I was doing some work in the community theatre there, and helped set up for his show. We went with him to the local pancake house for late dinner/breakfast after the show. Nice, nice guy. I remember some of his songs:"Smoke that cigarette", "Use it up, wear it out, make it do, or do without", and "I got a girl, her name is Sal, and she looks like a waterfowl" . (Something like that) He said he wanted to pursue more serious writing after that year, but that was great fun. Wow...Thanks for letting me reminisce.

Gamble was a fine genuine soul searcher who really knew how to captivate and inflame an audiance. He was courtly to women and treated everyone in a gentlemanly fashion. He was a wonderful breath of warm Florida air on many cold chicago winter nights. I'm sure this warmth and dignity is what did him in. He really had no business trying to save those people the state of his own health being what it was. Just a great man. Easy as pie to chat with and really fun to lisen to. Also one of the great finger pickers of the guitar in a Merle Travis style. He was a friend in the truest sense. I feel warm everytime I think about him.

Thanks for the memories,

Luke

Besides all that, Gamble was a wordcrafter of the first order. After hearing a set from him, you could understand why, in times past, people would dress in their Sunday best and stand outside for all of a summer afternoon to hear the orator at the town Fourth of July celebration.
Any 'Catters that make it to this, please say hello to Paul Butterfield (no, but they're cousins) and his wife. He's one of the finest sound men I know. Thanks, Mary Hermance

Harpgirl, Thanks for that pat on the back. Yes, I had some fun this past weekend. Don't know where you live, but let me know if anyone there would like to book me for a concert or invite me to a pickin' party. My primary email is dowlds@aug.com I really witnessed some serious talent this year - as always.

I knew Gamble pretty well. He was a gentleman in every sense of the word. His death was a tragedy that will not be recovered from soon.
A tourist from Canada got caught in a rip tide and Gamble- who was so severly arthritic that he could not turn his head- went in to try to save him. Both men drowned.
But it was typical of Gamble that he gave no thought to himself when another needed him.
I miss him. He was a friend.
