Subject: Have you seen Current Dylan tour? From: GUEST,Steve Latimer Date: 08 May 00 - 12:52 PM Bob Dylan is currently touring Europe, he is coming back to North America in the summer. Has anyone seen this tour? I've seen Bob twice, Once in the eighties and it was awful. I saw him again in '97 and loved it. I'm just wondering which Bob is on the road now. He is coming back to Toronto in July and I'd like to go, but not if he's not up to snuff. |
Subject: RE: Have you seen Current Dylan tour? From: Whistle Stop Date: 08 May 00 - 01:00 PM I haven't seen him in person since the 1970s, but I think that Dylan these days is a hit-or-miss proposition. His best years are behind him, but he can still inspire -- sometimes. I read a recent interview with him in which he pretty much admitted this; he said that, touring all the time as he does, after so many years, he just can't guarantee that every show will be a good one. Sometimes his voice seems to be beyond redemption, sometimes he just doesn't seem to have a clue. I would guess that you might get a wide range of responses from people who have seen him recently. I look at Dylan like I used to look at Muhammad Ali after he came back to the ring. He wasn't the fighter he had been, and sometimes you were actually embarrassed for him. But just when you were ready to dismiss him as a has-been, he somehow managed to dazzle you one more time. |
Subject: RE: Have you seen Current Dylan tour? From: simon-pierre Date: 08 May 00 - 01:21 PM Do you mean that tour he began fifteen years ago and never stop since? He seems always on the road. I saw him in Montréal in 1996, just after his two back-to-the-roots albums and the pityful unplugged. I was surprised to hear a very good show, a good selections of tunes, and a «great» voice - at least far better than on the albums mentionned. Regarding the great quality of «Time out of mind», I would not miss that tour. Even if it is a bad show (yes, yes, I am a fan, you can beat me now). SP |
Subject: RE: Have you seen Current Dylan tour? From: Wesley S Date: 08 May 00 - 01:25 PM I saw last summers tour with Dylan and Paul Simon. Dylan opened. His band was a group of young kids in their 20's by my guess. It had a country/rock feel to it. Dylan played a lot of lead guitar suprisingly. Sometimes you had to wait until the chorus to figure out what song he was singing. He likes to rearrange his "standards". I enjoyed the show - my wife didn't. But she's never liked him anyway. Her glowing review was " he didn't sound nearly as bad as I thought he would". But honestly Paul Simon but on the better show. |
Subject: RE: Have you seen Current Dylan tour? From: GUEST,Steve Latimer Date: 08 May 00 - 02:07 PM Wesley, I loved your wife's review. Simon-Pierre, I kinda liked Unplugged, especially the selection of material. Time Out of Mind is quickly becoming one of my favourite Dylan albums. |
Subject: RE: Have you seen Current Dylan tour? From: katlaughing Date: 08 May 00 - 02:33 PM I have unused tickets for the one and only time he came to Wyoming, which was a couple of months ago. WOund up having to miss it, but everyone I know who went to it really enjoyed it. Said it was a good show, but, unless we travel to Denver, remember, we are out in the sticks and quite often *deprived*, so just about anything live is a welcome change!**BG** katstillmadaboutmissingit! |
Subject: RE: Have you seen Current Dylan tour? From: Spider Tom Date: 09 May 00 - 02:24 AM I saw him when he toured Australia last. I thought he was BRILLIANT! Yet I read reviews of the same show which went from hot to cold. Trouble is; what is good Dylan or bad Dylan. Dylan is DYLAN, you pays your money and you takes your chances. I hope I have been able to stir up any confusion. ,br . Spider Tom

Subject: RE: Have you seen Current Dylan tour? From: Terry K Date: 09 May 00 - 02:36 AM I've been lucky enough to see him three times in recent years, Brixton, Stratford (Phoenix Festival) and Hyde Park. Spider Tom, you sum it up completely - for me it's just a treat to be in the presence of such a phenomenal talent. (But I can tingle involuntarily when I see a Degas original). I also loved Whistle Stop's reference to Ali - hey, my two greatest favourite stars in one post! My £0.0083 recurring. Terry |
Subject: RE: Have you seen Current Dylan tour? From: Steve Latimer Date: 27 Jun 00 - 02:40 PM I thought I would refresh this. I have my tickets to the July 18th Toronto show. Has anyone seen him on this tour? How was it? |
Subject: RE: Have you seen Current Dylan tour? From: JenEllen Date: 27 Jun 00 - 02:55 PM Saw him last time through Pullman, and also with the Simon show at the Gorge. I'll have to agree with Wesley's wife. Not nearly as bad as I thought it would be. Just go and enjoy yourself! ~Elle |
