My Dad (who hails from Scotland) always sang a song called Cod Lover Oil. Something about a Doctor who prescribes it to an ailing woman and she seems to get hooked on the stuff.

Anyone else heard of it?

Thanks

There's a set of lyrics in the DigiTrad Database that I'm pretty sure are what you're looking for, but it's under the name "Cod Liver Ile.

Hope it's what you're looking for.

Oh, doctor, Oh doctor, Oh dear Dr. John
Your cod liver oil is so pure and so strong
I'm afraid on me life I'll go down in the soil
If my wife won't stop drinking your cod liver oil.

I wake up in the morning, it sure is a fright
The cod liver oil flasks, Oh what a sight
And just as the kettle is starting to boil
You would swear it is whistling "Cod Liver Oil"

Oh Doctor...

That's all I know. Hope it helps.

Hey... I've got a question...

Anyone know where this song comes from? I've got it on a compilation CD, but it doesn't give any background. Is it traditional, or is it of more recent vintage?

Anyone?

I thought this was going to be "COD LIVER OIL AND THE ORANGE JUICE". A great song made famous by Hamish Imlach, about the adventures of "Hairy Mary". By the way, does anyone have the lyrics handy?

Cheers

There's a Canadian version of this in the books, and also a British one I think--probably the original. That "Dear John" is really a mishearing of the doctor's name "De Jong" [not quite sure how to spell it), which may be the real name of a real inventor of a real brand of Cod Liver Oil.

Since nobody else seems to have mentioned this, I thought I'd throw it in: 19th century patent medicines were often laced with opiates. It made the patient feel better almost immdediately, and of course there's nothing better than addiction to assure repeat customers.

So the wife in question was quite literally addicted to Dr. DeJohn's cod liver oil. It must have been pretty awful to have this happen, and not understand what was going on.

This is a Newfoundland song,of possibly Irish descent, and cod liver oil was a common tonic and still is. It did not contain any opiates. It is an excellent vitamin source but tastes awful.

It sure does taste awful

And how many children of a certain age were made to take a spoonful each and everyday. Torture. It would constitute abuse nowadays

But then he does a great job generally.

Oh yeah, it's a song that's been around a while. I also have a version by either Alan Mills or Tom Kines on a Canadian Centennial Folk Song collection. And I know Oscar Brand recorded it too sometime in the 50s.

Val Doonican on CD, jeeze , haven't seen that! Seriously, the CLO was administered with a quick follow up of the orange juice to kill the taste!! Personal experience on that one!

Used to get that on alternate mornings. Boy that OJ went down fast, usually meeting the CLO on its way back up, and both would then hit the stomach like a bucket of liquid lesd. Yecchh!

On the mornings in between we got a desert spoon of Scott's Emulsion, which slid down the throat like a liquidised slug (garden, not bullet).

Between these two, disease kept well away from us, and the only one I had was measles, so they may have had some efficacy, but I can still remember the taste, and you know what?...........IT WASN'T WORTH IT.

I *knew* I'd heard something similar -- Tim Jordan* may well have borrowed this tune when he wrote "Johnny Jump Up" in the 1940s (the lyric "hit by a car" and the modern use of "bar" as a drinking establishment tells you this is surely not trad, although many insist on crediting it as such), but Jordan spent all of his life in Cork, so that argues an Irish origin for the Newfoundland tune.

*Kevin Manley is the source (often spelled as Manly, but look at the email addy in the Cantaria link, for instance).

I'm a young married man and I'm tired of life
Ten years I've been wed to a pale sickly wife
She's nothing to do only sit there and cry
Praying and praying to God she would die

A friend of my own came to see me one day
He told me my wife, she was pining away
He afterwards told me that she would get strong
If I'd get a bottle from dear doctor John

Chorus:
Oh doctor, oh doctor, oh dear doctor John
Your cod liver oil is so pure and so strong
I''m afraid of my life I'll go down in the soil
If my wife don't stop drinking your cod liver oil

I bought her a bottle well just for to try
and the way that she drank it you'd think she might die
I bought her another, it vanished the same
And then she got cod liver oil on the brain

I bought her another, she drank it no doubt
And then she began to get terrible stout
And when she got stout well of course she got strong
And I became jealous of dear doctor John

Chorus:
Oh doctor, oh doctor, oh dear doctor John
Your cod liver oil is so pure and so strong
I''m afraid of my life I'll go down in the soil
If my wife don't stop drinking your cod liver oil

My house it resembles a great doctor's shop
It's covered in bottles from bottom to top
When early in the morning the kettle dors boil
You would swear it was singing of cod liver oil

Chorus:
Oh doctor, oh doctor, oh dear doctor John
Your cod liver oil is so pure and so strong
I''m afraid of my life I'll go down in the soil
If my wife don't stop drinking your cod liver oil

So all you young fellows where'er you may be
I hope you will heed this fair warning from me
From sickly women I pray you recoil
Or you'll find yourself swimming in cod liver oil

Chorus:
Oh doctor, oh doctor, oh dear doctor John
Your cod liver oil is so pure and so strong
I''m afraid of my life I'll go down in the soil
If my wife don't stop drinking your cod liver oil

“Colm O Lochlainn[1892 – 26 June 1972] writes of this extremely popular song:

‘Learnt in childhood from my father's cousin Alice Deady of Waterford (Mrs. Sam Allingham).
I well remember the advertisements in old magazines for Dr. De Jongh's Cod Liver Oil. Who wrote the song I do not know.
The tune is really Irish and I have heard it put to Davis's song ‘The Grave of Wolfe Tone’.”

Subject: Lyr Add: DR. DE JONGH'S COD LIVER OIL (Bodleian)
From: FreddyHeadey
Date: 01 Jan 19 - 05:14 PM

I'm a poor married man and wretched's my life;
Six years since, I married a sickly young wife;
From morning till night she did nothing but sigh,
And the people all thought she was going to die.
Till a friend of mine called at my house one fine day,
And he saw that my wife she was pining away ;
But he very soon told her how she could get strong,
By drinking the oil made by Doctor de Jongh.

Oh, Doctor de Jongh, Doctor de Jongh,
Your cod liver oil is so pure and so strong;
I can see very soon I'll be under the soil,
If my wife she keeps drinking your cod liver oil.

I got her bottle which gave her delight,
For quickly she put the content out of sight,
Then bought her a dozen, which vanished the same;
Till I thought she'd take cod liver oil on the brain.
It was then that I noticed with wonder and doubt,
That my wife she was getting so awfully stout;
And when she got stout, well of course she got strong;
That I own I felt jealous of Doctor de Jongh.

I cooed and we courted like two turtle doves,
But lately my wife has brought home boxing gloves;
And if I don't keep just as quiet as a mouse,
We've a round, 'tis a round. I'm sent all round the house.
It was only last night that the servant girl grins,
And says "Master the missus has brought you home twins"
Two more blessed babies for which I've to toil.
I wish she'd stop drinking that cod liver oil.

There's my son little Billy he's getting so fat,
Each day like a porpoise he rolls on the mat!
And even the cat's got a coat just like silk,
For my wife says that oil is much better than milk.
I can't get a bit cooked, let me do what I like,
For she swears against cooking she's out on the strike,
And even the kettle when it comes to the boil,
It seems to be singing out "Cod Liver Oil".

Oh! Doctor de Jongh, who taught you the art?
Of using cod livers to break a chaps heart;
For if you continue I can very soon see,
Cods livers will make a short liver[s] of me.
For my house it resembles a large doctor's shop,
With your bottles it's filled right from bottom to top,
And if my wife dies and goes under the soil,
On her tombstone I'll write "Here lies Cod Liver Oil."

Wikipedia says "Cod Liver Oil" is a song about a traditional medicinal drink for many Newfoundlanders. Cod liver oil in the traditional way of manufacture was sun cured and served in bottles in its raw form.
The song was written by
Johnny Burke (1851–1930),
a balladeer from St. John's, Newfoundland.
It has been recorded by the Irish band The Dubliners and by Newfoundland folk rock band Great Big Sea on their album The Hard and the Easy.

The song is played to the melody of the traditional Irish sean-nós song "An Lacha Bacach" (Irish: The Lame Duck), as famously portrayed by Nell Ní Chróinín.
