I know there probably aren't a lot of you who can make it to this, but I thought I'd let ya'll know about it, anyway.

I just got the info on the "cowboyographer" who will be appearing from Douglas, WY. Charley Hendren presents the "Great American West in Poetry & Song" and has been called one of the top three cowboy poets writing today. There's a bunch more about him in a brochure. Comes from a real cowboy family and sounds like a pretty good deal.

We will also have a bagpiper from Lander, WY; and are proud to present authentic, multi-generational Basque dancers from Sheridan, who have not performed publicly in several years. (This was a real coup! We've been trying to get them for three years!)

There will also be Mexican and Greek dancers.

Here's the *official* blurb. Ya'll come if ya can!

"Come celebrate the many cultures of Wyoming at the Third Annual Wyoming Culture Fest, Saturday, June 10th, at the Central Wyoming Fairgrounds in Casper! Taste Jewish potato latkes; hot Mexican corn on the cob; Greek food and more! Listen to cowboys songs and stories; bagpipe music; watch Basque, Native American, Greek, and Mexican folk dancing! Free arts & crafts for kids! $2 for adults; under 18 and seniors FREE . Wyoming Culture Fest, Saturday, June 10th, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., at the Central Wyoming Fairgrounds in Casper !"

I haven't been able to get ahold of WW, as she is not online, yet. But I think it would be wonderful if LeeJ and BlueJay could make it up, too, kind of a long stretch from Trinidad, though.

Come *Muddy* up m'house!!!

Just a little but more of an update for anyone interested. I know it may not be relevant to a lot of you, but it will give Sorcha, Bill, and Allan, at least, more of an idea of what will be happening, oxymorons and all!**BG**

This year's Fest will continue that of previous celebrations with entertainment, educational programs, foods, and free arts and crafts for children, from the many cultures of Wyoming.

Margaret Mead said, "Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed people can change the world. Indeed it is the only thing that ever has." With that in mind, members of the NCGP held the first Wyoming Culture Fest in 1998.

Its purpose has always been to provide a safe, social and educational environment in which everyone could share the rich cultural heritage of Wyoming's peoples of Native American, Latino/a, African, Asian, and European descent. Members of the non-profit human rights group also hoped the Fest would increase cooperation among people of various racial ethnic groups through promoting understanding, respect, and acceptance of diverse cultural heritages. Entertainment includes:
Casper Fiddle Club playing schottisches from northern Europe, polkas from Eastern Europe, varsouvianna dance music from Poland & Austria, highland flings from Scotland & Ireland, and quadrille step dance from France.
A Lil Pizazz dance troupe from Casper will bring the music and dance of Greece to the stage.
Colors in Unity group, from Cheyenne's Youth Alternative, will close out the morning's program with music and dance.

In the arts and crafts Children's Area, special presentations will include African storytelling with Lydiah Nganga and John Kambutu, of Casper, followed by Glenda Williams, with the Story of the Pinata and Pinata-breaking.

Native American dancing will start off the afternoon with Casper's Sharpnose Dancers, followed by
cowboyographer, Charley Hendren, of Douglas, who chronicles the American West in song and poetry;
then, bagpiper, Ray Price, from Lander, will bring a bit of the Scottish Highlands to Casper.

There will also be a rare public performance by Buffalo's Big Horn Basque dancers.
Rounding out the day's cultural presentations will be Los Jovenes, from Casper's Dean Morgan Junior High, featuring Mexican folkloric dances.

Free arts and crafts for children will include
Adinkra Sponge Printing (African cloth printing) and Kufi African hats;
Mexican click-clack toys;
Japanese fish prints and origami
hands-on Mexican paper flower and collage making
worry dolls and Papel Picado (Mexican paper cutting)
face-painting and puppets
Ukrainian egg decorating

Ethnic goods, foods, and information will be offered by various vendors including Baha'i Faith; Pan's Grove; Greek food from Kritin Cafe; breads from Delices de France; and Mexican corn, frajitas and popsicles from Gateway Ministries. The Duran family will sell Indian tacos and frybread.

The American Historical Society of Germans from Russia will feature baked goods and quilts; Arte Peru will have crafts; Wildcrafters will sell jewelry and crafts from India; and, Artifacts of Casper will offer ethnic crafts and gifts. Tonkin bamboo from Bambu, ahora! and items from the Olson Family Norwegian Goods will also be available. Soda Jerks, A Lil Pizazz, Coffee Shaman, and the Natrona County Democrats will also offer American favorites such as hot dogs, sno-cones, popcorn, and beverages. In addition, Casper's own Sydney Spiegel will offer free Jewish potato latkes (pancakes.)

SO.....ya'll come! It IS going to be fun! Oh, and Dave and Bill? You can take home Tshirts with that rare logo of the Wyoming Culture Fest to show you really made to windy Wyo!!**BG**

Ya got my tongue hangin' out, kat, especially the fry bread and latkes! I just don't think 12 hours in a car with a 5-year-old counts as quality time. I REALLY wish I could be there, though.

Aloha,
Mark

Sure it's quality time, Mark, if you teach her new songs all the way up and back!**BG**

You would probably enjoy Sydney, the gentleman who is making the latkas and giving them out for free. He was a schoolteacher all of his life. He is in his 70's now and rides a bicyle everywhere, even in the winter here! And, he swims a lot, got some sort of award for swimming so many hundreds of miles as a senior citizen. He is a delightful person to debate with and the head of the state Labour Party. Quite the conversationalist and champion of underclasses. Just wrote a book, too, can't remember the name of it just now.

Oh, and the frybread IS delicious! I guess I could send ya a care package?**BG** Ah, well, like I said int eh other thread, good luck on the custody thing and have a good visit, even if it won't be up here.

Hey, Kat, I am so online again. I actually might come up for this and to pick up a bunch of my other gear from Wyoming. I'm sort of moving down here in waves.

I'll keep it in mind and do my best, given my equal need to make, you know, like a living and all...

WW

OH, hell, Wyo, ya don't have to work on the weekends just cause yer freelance now, c'mon up! Here's a little more on some of the entertainers to whet your whistle or entice you or somethin':

Native American Dancing: At 1:00 p.m., Casper's Sharpnose Dancers will start off the afternoon with dancing. Jim Dewey and his daughters, Amanda and Jessica, are direct decendants of Chief Sharpnose, the last warrior chief of the Northern Arapahoe Tribe. Mr. Dewey's wife Geri, a Cheyenne River Sioux, joins them in honoring Chief Sharpnose through Traditional and Fancy dances. Mr. Dewey also performs a Sneak Up Dance.
Learning and performing dances since they were children and passing the culture on to their own children, the Dewey's regularly give educational presentations of dances with explanations throughout Wyoming.

Cowboy Songs & Poetry: Following at 2:00 p.m. Cowboyographer, Charley Hendren, of Douglas, will chronicle the American West in song and poetry. Son of a cowboy and great grandson of an old-time Texas drover, Hendren was the official voice of the Cowboy Museum of the West for several years; is a performing member of the Western Music Association and the Academy of Western Artists; and, has produced an album and book of his original works. He combines old trail tunes and yodeling with contemporary songs and poetry which honor America's cowboy heritage.

Scottish Highland Bagpipes: Performing at 3:00 p.m., longtime Lander resident, Ray Price, has been playing the Scottish Highland Bagpipes for 23 years. For 15 years he was a partner in Rocky Mountain Highland Supply based in Lander that supplied Scottish gear to many of the bands in the Rocky Mountain West. His tutors have included several world class players. Price travels locally and to other communities and states to play mostly for weddings and funerals. He also teaches bagpipes and has also taught classes on the History of Scotland at Central Wyoming College.

Basque Dancing: At 4:00 p.m. The Big Horn Basque Club will present several folk dances from the Basque Country in Europe including Soka Dantza which is a combination of processional dances going from one town to the next; Hegi and Mariena dances with an individual calling out each step. These dances originate from two neighboring towns, Luzaide and Arnegi, in the Basque Country. They will also perform Lantzeko Ihauteria, commonly known as Carnival of Lantze from the province of Nafarroa . It is a ritualistic ceremony of defeating winter and allowing spring to arrive. The women in the group will perform Axuri Beltza, also from the province of Nafarroa. They will also present two variations of the Fandango and Arin-Arina. The Basque people borrowed the Fandangoa or Jota from Spain's Aragon region and have made it more intricate. The accompanying arin-arina, or fast-fast, originates from the Basque Country. These dances have been passed down through the generations of Basque in Johnson County and other other individuals of Basque descent. The Big Horn Basque Club and dance group was formed in November 1981 and is a member the North American Basque Organization. The slogan chosen for the club is "Zaharrer Segi" or "follow the old". Through the efforts of the Big Horn Basque Club the Basques of Wyoming will continue their legacy and preserve their heritage.

Ya'll come!
