Subject: Lyr Add: Match Box Blues (Blind Lemon Jefferson) From: Earl Date: 29 Jan 98 - 06:01 PM MATCH BOX BLUES (Blind Lemon Jefferson) Up on the river, mama, walk down by the sea Up on the river walk down by the sea I got those tadpoles and minnows all in over me
Standing here wonderin' will a matchbox hold my clothes
Lord, lord, who may your manager be?
I wouldn't mind marryin', but I can't stand to settle down.
Well I'm leavin' town, cryin' won't make me stay
This is all I have for "One Dime Blues":
I'm broke and I ain't got a dime (3x)
You want your friend to be bad like Jesse James? (3x)

I've got complete "Document" BLJ recordings, and it's interesting to me to have any lyrics. Very often I couldn't understand his words. I've got some complete "Document" recs of pre-war blues singers. If you need I can send you some Tommy Johnson's, Charley Patton's, Son House's lyrics. Best wishes! Ruslan. Russia. |
Subject: Lyr Req: Blind Lemon Jefferson From: pinky451 Date: 28 Jan 00 - 07:40 PM Hi - I've been lurking for awhile and I like the mudcat! I now have a real need for your expertise. I need lyrics for some BLJ songs that my friends will (hopefully) be performing at a BLJ festival next fall. Through your search engines I got 4 songs. We're now looking for "See that my grave is kept clean", "Corrina blues", or anything else you guys have or can point me to. Thanks! Pinky |
Subject: ADD Version: Three White Horses in a Line From: Amos Date: 28 Jan 00 - 08:44 PM "Please see that my grave..." is the same, I think, as "Three White Horses In a Line". From memory, the words are: THREE WHITE HORSES IN A LINE Well it's three white horses in a line (3x) Gonna carry me to my burying ground. Did you ever hear a hearse come by (3x) And know, Dear God, you' bound to die Now there's one kind favor I'd ask of you (3x) Please see that my grave is kept clean. May be other verses I don't know, though. A. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Blind Lemon Jefferson From: pinky451 Date: 30 Jan 00 - 05:11 PM Thanks Amos! Any/all information helps! Someone elsewhere said that See-See Rider(?) was the same as Corrina Blues. Anyone else out there have any leads for me? Thanks in advance! Pinky |
Subject: Lyr Add: CORINNE CORINNA (from Cab Calloway) From: Amos Date: 30 Jan 00 - 05:45 PM There are clumps of similarities but I do not believe the two are the same. Like a lot of Delta blues verses migrated from one song to another and were frequently adjusted -- try looking up the line "river was whiskey" in the DT and see how many different blues use it, as an experiment. Back in 1731 some songster wrote an ode to Corinna, Pride of Drury-Lane, For whom no Shepherd sighs in vain; and various talents have been poursuing the perfect Corrina ever since. Dylan's version has become kind of a standard even though it is much slower and more citified than Blind Lemon's. Here is Cab Calloways 1931 rendition, much livelier. CORINNE CORINNA (from Cab Calloway) Corinne, Corinna, where you been so long? Corinne, Corinna, where you been so long? Ain't been no loving since you been gone.
Oh, Corinna, where'd you stay last night?
I met Corinna way across the sea,
Corinne, Corinna, what's the matter now?
Good-bye, Corinna, it's farewell to you. |
