Subject: Courtin' songs From: big48mama Date: 15 Jun 00 - 11:49 PM I am attending college this summer working on Master's in Music and am doing my Master's Thesis on "Courtin' Songs". I would appreciate any information, stories, hits, ideas, anything which would help me in my research endeavor. Even any travelling salesman, courting jokes, (keep it PG-13 rated please). Anything about this topic. Thanks |

Subject: RE: Help: Courtin' songs From: Baba Date: 16 Jun 00 - 01:41 AM What sort of songs? Songs where the couple are happily united in the end, or delicious songs where the female being courted thwarts the undesirable male's advances, or perhaps songs with a tragic ending ... Further to Metchosin's suggestion above, try typing @courting in the Mudcat search box. It will give you all the songs in the database category of "courting". Good luck! *BABA* |

Subject: RE: Help: Courtin' songs From: Kim C Date: 16 Jun 00 - 10:14 AM I am especially fond of night visiting songs.... I guess there's an element of intrigue there! Somebody --- and now I can't remember who but it isn't Smithsonian --- has a HUGE collection of English folk songs which spans about 20 volumes and they are broken up by category. We have the Songs of Seduction CD, which has some sweet songs on it as well as some bawdy ones. I believe there is another CD in that collection that has songs of romance or something on it. I'm sorry I can't remember the company offhand. |
Subject: RE: Help: Courtin' songs From: GUEST,Mrr Date: 16 Jun 00 - 10:28 AM Am trying to recall what song has the lyric If You Do Not When You May You Shall Not When You Will, Sir. It's about a man attempting to get a woman to lie down for him, promising her he'll be really careful of her dress, and she gets all pi**y, apparently, because if he were really passionate he wouldn't care about her dress... or something... very strange song I like a lot about how NOT to court. |
Subject: RE: Help: Courtin' songs From: GUEST Date: 16 Jun 00 - 12:41 PM Kim C - I was about to post the same recommendation! It's the original Topic collection, buut recently reissued; the whole thing is great - don't think that you'll only find courting songs under Songs of Seduction tho, try all the others as well. One of my favourites, that I've known for ever, is Bogie's Bonny Belle - sung by Davy Stewart on this collection. jayohjo XX |
Subject: RE: Help: Courtin' songs From: GUEST,Guest: Doris Date: 16 Jun 00 - 01:55 PM I s'pose I should look at the DT listing to see if it's there, but I have a favorite which was sung by Harry Lauder. I understand the English thumb their noses at Lauder because his "folk songs" are not truly traditional. I like 'em anyway. The one I like goes I'm a-courtin a farmer's daughter and a sweeter gal you've never seen Her cheeks they are a rosy red And she is just sweet seventeen I put my arms around her waist to try to steel a kiss She starts in wigglin', twistin' jigglin' Then she starts in shoutin this: Oh-oh, stop your ticklin'. Jock Won't you stop your ticklin' Jock Sure ye make me laugh so hearty That I nearly choke Stop all your nonsense Just look at all the folk! Stop your ticklin', Tickle, ickle, icklin Stop your ticklin Jock. Song may go I further. I don't know. Sung in a scottish brogue.
