Every night around 10pm I get it down & connect to Mudcat (oops I mean the internet). I live in a large old 1 bedroom flat full of bookcases, display cabinets & other furniture. There was no room left for a real computer & table etc so I had to buy the laptop. sandra |

At least it used to be spacious until Dick Guru moved in with his drum kit, 2 guitars and endless supply of soiled underwear. The PC is in what used to be the spare room, but is now a junk room, complete with baking tray under dripping radiator. The PC lives on a small work station, with a wash-board hanging on the wall above. But don't worry, I don't play it - at least not in public. Shelley |

My 'at home' PC is in my dining room /family /music room. I'm sitting here with the piano behind me, the Casio keyboard to the left, the beloved HD28, a bouzouki, G/D melodeon, C melodeon,two violins and various other bits to blow/hit scattered around. CD rack with 400 + CDs is above the piano. My trusty old and faithful Pioneer Hi-Fi amp has just given up the ghost after twenty one years of faithful service so there's bits of CD players, tape decks and speakers lying about waiting to be joined up again as soon as the new amp arrives. View through window of garden, 2 children, 2 cats, 1 rabbit, trees and sunshine... CK oops - forgot the mic stands and rocking chair.. |

I see my carved rabbit stump in the yard and about eight liveoaks, crepe mrytle, dogwood, a big rosemary bush, and the edge of one of the fig trees. I just tore out the pittospora and redid the bed under the window so I could see! The room is peach with a fifty year old lime-green sofa and the computer sits on a long pine desk. There are pens in a jar, three lamps, an overhead fan, wrestling downloads everywere, a fax machine, and office accoutremounts all around. The den also holds a huge 100 year old pine cupboard with my record collection of about 400 albums, lots of stereo equipment, including a broken turntable which means Im not listening to anything on the turntable...the room has various oil paintings, and three bookcases which inclued my Gertrude Stein first edition collection, and my collection of mythology books. There is a huge TV and three plastic boxes of nintendo equipment which is scattered all around, usually. A magazine rack, and an exercise machine, oh and the books for the PTSO of which I am the new treasurer...my instruments and the rest of my music equipment fills the living room and my bedroom suite...is that enough mind-numbing detail???? |

Over my head is a row of clocks purporting to show the time in various cities of the world (all wrong, of course, because the engineers here are stroppy. Being a modern, paper-free office, every available surface is covered with newspapers and printouts. No cats here - which is a pity, because on my desk is a photograph of a mouse which has caused consternation among my female colleagues by emerging at intervals from the ducts that carry the network cables under the floor. The machine itself says Compaq on the front and I loathe it because it keeps crashing. At home I have a Mac PowerBook and a small psychopathic black and white cat that likes to stand on the keyboard and stick its rear end in my face - sometimes with unpleasant consequences (cf Liz the Squeak's thread on feline flatulence!) In a week's time I shall be leaving all this noise behind to move into my own office with a couple of Macs and a lot of hope to start up a business. And, by heck, it's a terrifying prospect. |

On the wall some shelves with CDs that are always growing and displacing books more and more. To my left a large library wich is actually a mess of books, CDs, Graciela's dolls, audio equipment and who knows what else. My desk is an old Radio Shack desk, steel and plywood, of those not available now. Gimenez (dog officer) lies nearby snoring loud. Julieta (unofficial female dog) sleeps outside in her nest because she suffers psichological motherhood. About 4 AM my wife asks for tea and I become a Galizian waiter. I wonder what else she would want me to become. More to the left a small backyard silent and cold in June. A medium apartment in a 10-million souls city, near the world's widest river. I am sitting in my dining room and the wall facing me is all book shelves which spill over onto the floor. The wall behind me is covered with photo's of kids, friends, family etc. The table is covered with the usual clutter descibed by most all other posters, and the walls have bits and pieces of african carvings, sconces for candles and such instruments as occasionally get put out of the cats reach. There are also;two guitars, a bodrhan, other assorted noise makers and a mandolin, tapes and c.ds in any place left over. Oh yes and cats..two, myopic, mad and with a fixation for sitting on the keyboard...but only when I want to use it.I definitely see a theme emerging here:) |

It started life as a Viglen and the monitor still belongs to that system. As for the other bits, currently unbranded case containing Power Supply, EP-MVP3G VIA mother board, AMD K6-2 500 processor, 128Mb DRAM, Unknown 48x CD ROM, Unkown Floppy drive, Western Digital 8.4Gb Hard Drive for Windows, Seagate 4.3Gb Hard drive for Linux, AST AGP Graphics card, Askey 56k Modem, Sound Blaster AWE32 Soundcard fitted with Yamaha Dauther board for good midi but with a fault on the Mic in line and a SB16 soundcard to serve as a cheap soulution to the Mic problem on the other sound card. What ever it may be, it seems to work very well for me and I don't think I will be making any further changes for a while unless someone offers me a really cheap CD writer on a day when I happen to have some spare cash. In brightly lit offices, however, I have seen 'screens' over the monitor that filter out loads of UV, or whatever that stuff is, and are more 'eye-friendly'. Other than that, pick a colour scheme other than the Windows default dark blue, and turn the brightness down on the monitor. Oh yes, and there's a phone on the desk on my left hand side. In front of me an IBM G40 screen (I'm not really a 'screen person'), to my left, at a 45 degree angle (that or thereabouts) is my 'eternally being upgraded' AST Advantage, at the moment with 166MHz and 96 megs. On top of that, a radio tuner, on top of that, my Samson 8 channel mixer and amp, connected to a pair of Pioneer CS-343's (old, but IMHO, an excellent sound), with the Yorkville bass bins of my personal P.A. (mixer and amp also). On top of that a guitar synth, and all connected through an amazingly tidy set of wiring (should I say so myself), to a cassette deck; an old Kenwood. When I come back from Ireland towards the end of the year, I'll bring back a digital 8 track recorder, much like what Michael K described in his Musical Samples' thread. Between this stack, and the screen is a Mustek scanner, and on the floor, to my left, and therefore in the corner of the room, is a decent enough HP deskjet. So basically, I have barricaded myself into the corner of the room, looking 'out' at it, behind a rather large office desk with it's attendant drawers and filing cabinets, cluttered with everything from Tax returns, contracts, stationery, and advertising bumf. Candle on a large old handmade cider bottle (empty) carefully cultivated with 15 years of wax on it's sides, and miraculously transported from Ireland to Norway without a scratch, sits on my right. Ashtray, tobacco, ripped up empty Rizla packets, cable modem, and Morrocan insence burner Four guitars are always on stands just beyond this mess; normally the Morris 9 string, the customised Washburn D92LTD, the Takamine EG332, and a beautiful wee Yamaha classical of no particular pedigree, but with the tone of it's 40 years evident. This is, of course, when no one is staying over, which is what happened over the last few days, when Séamus came up from Copenhagen to see the Waterboys. Plenty of things to do in order to get this place (my space) ticking over the way I want it, which is the reason that I'll go back gigging again next year. Whenever I want total seclusion, I take all of the afore-mentioned musical gear up to our cottage 250 km north of Oslo, and 25km off the road, set it up there and bang away to myself. My home computer isn't hooked up to the outside world and is in a spare bedroom aka "The Study" full of bookshelves, file cabinets, slides and photos,tapes and my wife's playing card collection (she collects packs with unusual court cards or with illustrations on the face of the cards). The cupboard with the photos and camera clutter is where my kazoo gathers dust between rare outings. My work computer is on a desk with the usual work clutter in a room shared with four colleagues with a "boss cubicle" (glass wall) watching over us. I have various Dilbert etc cartoons pinned up,a Greek island photo and a Pacific Island photo and one of Mrs Skiff, to remind me why I still need to work. I also have a film still from Laughton's "Mutiny on the Bounty" I used to put on the door when I had my own office. My added caption says "I'm all tied up at the moment, leave a message with..." We'd love to tuck it in the basement but want it in full view of the family since it is most often used by my 14-yr old son. He's absolutely trust-worthy but we wish to lead him not into temptation... Abot the 'puter is a lovely framed photo of Rocky Mtn National Park. To my left is the sliding door leading to the screen porch which looks out over beautiful woods- the reason we bought a ranch in the first place! I'm sitting here listening to Mudcat Radio and wishing I could be there in the folk song circle! |

I've got a comfortable black leather chair to swivel around and adjust the volume of my stero at my right elbow usually delivering NPR or one of the many CD's or tapes stacked. Behind me are: a great closet; the bed; TV on the dresser; two lamps, one of which my Dad won in an horseshoe contest 45 yrs ago; an antique table once my grandma's; a watercolor of a New England street scence complete with a bay and boats for sailing; an old mahogony hope chest; a music stand; a few guitars; my exercise bike;my rose colored carpet is showing wear around the PC; and my upholstered chair once the provenance of Lotte Lenya. My view out the windows from my chair is tree tops. I'm on the second floor of a colonial house set high on the property. Two cats visit frequently only one has any PC skill. |

At home we now use Hardiman's laptop in a room surrounded by the oddest wallpaper which we cannot remove because we rent.... imagine Audubon bird prints. OK, but there are only four prints, repeating endlessly all around the room, in an approx. 12-inch tile pattern with 3-inch green bands where there would be grout. The pattern is so busy it makes one reel, no matter how much one may love birds. For the rest of the place, see a thread I will post in a week or two about our general environs, titled something like "Praise and Hardiman Virtual Houseparty." BTW Amos, who happens to be out of town, is way ahead of us. See his bbc profile, where he is seated at his computer. All that is missing is the cartoon bubble of all his stories and other flights of fancy, over his head. A parish Hardi and I visited had a cute members' photo wall, BTW-- each person had posed with an object that had great personal significance to them... I am imagining some of you Catpals now, and what you would have in your photo.... I suppose in our family's case, that would show us in the midst of all those birds, buried up to our necks in instruments, sound gear, and sheet music, with words and chords flitting about... oops, the drugs are kicking in, gotta go enjoy the antihistamine rush.... ~S~ |

I can't remember if he's been to my digs since I moved in there or not (and being the sweetie of the sister of my X2B, he might have, as I still have very good relations with everyone ELSE in that family). Also he (AllanC) lives only a mile or 2 away. But if I did have him over, it was before I joined the Mudcat or at least before he knew I had and I knew he was in it, which I only found out fairly recently. |

Computer at work (where I am now) is on a desk in a long skinny room with everything sideways in it, too many books, too many "file piles" (I *hate* filing). Computer adornments: A Darwin fish, pictures of my twins and my mom and of myself as a child, a Mugatu, an Enterprise in a snowball thing, an Eiffel Tower, a Statue of Liberty brandishing a jalapeno pepper (parent company in NYC), a mouse (to remind me not to send those scathing emails), a lizard, a little Ceylonese elephant (for kids to play with if they come here), and a really nasty picture of my X2B to remind me of why I fled. A picture of a colleague's child who was even more preemie than mine and is doing OK. Scattered about: Coffee cups (I drink that awful decaf a lot). Little reminder cards. A lady Waldo (of the Find Waldo) and an American flag are stuck onto my pen holder thingie. A black armband with a jolly roger on it (leftover from some layoff-goodbye party) is wrapped around my computer base. Old and new catalogs of what we publish. On the wall, many many annotated maps, my work-related certificates, and my Who's Who plaque. Yes, I am in the Who's Who of Professionals, quelle idée. At home: the computer sits on an old desk with the drawer stuck in it upside down to serve as a keyboard tray. It has the twins' artwork on it (caterpillars made out of egg carton parts and things like that), an old beanbag frog from my adolescence, a pile of CDs that never seem to make it back into their jewel cases, piles of diskettes, work-related papers. The desk is in what the landlord called the dining room, which I call the far end of the living room or, sometimes, the twins' playroom as all their stuff is kept at that end of that room. I probably mudcat 4:1 at work:home, since at work I have a hard Internet connection and at home, only a modem. Tut tut. Will deny all if I have to... |

I actually caught him turning it on the other day. He stands on the on button, then watches the printer wheel and band spring into action. he also tries to stop the paper from feeding through, by hanging onto the other end of the paper with his teeth. Perhaps he is printin messages whilst I am out, I don't know, but He has a fixation with it. He also plays with the answer phone, and jams up the outgoing message play back, which has my voice on it. I think he must play it several times a day to hear me whilst I am out. Or he plays it to his buddies to show them how daft his owner is. Who knows what they get up to when you are out. We did manage mice in the past. I do have Cat ( daughter's nickname) so I suppose that counts. At work I am sat at a desk with a window looking across Sheffield - Although I have to get up to see more than sky and another part of the building. The piles of paper on my desk vary dependant on on how far through a project I am. I am a dreadful filer. On the shelves beside me I have postcards of a Rembrant self portrait, Joseph Wright's experiment with an air pump, Adrian Gormley's Field for the British Isles, Bluebells in a wood near us and the local moors. I also have Cat's latest school photo which she hates as usual. I have a fresh cup of tea which my erstwhile colleague has just made me. In the background I am listing to calls comming into the help desk and my manager having a meeting at her desk just to see if anything will effect me. At home the computer is the the spare room. Rather chucked in as it is still a fairly new addition. We have an old wooden chair and and my old desk from when I was young. Cat is agitating for a proper chair. The walls are covered in book shelves with books piled rather higledy pigledly. I think Tim has reorganised them again as I see all his Irish books are together. The floor and the desk are covered in various pieces of Cat's school work which I am going to tell her to tidy up, soon. From the window I look out across the tops of the houses and to the steel works in the valley . Sometimes you can hear the furnaces crackling when wet scrap meets the hot metal. Then you look out onto the opposite hill across the valley with the cars passing on the bypass. Sometimes I just sit in the dark listing to the steel works watching the lights of the cars, catching some of the domestic sounds while waiting for the computer to reach its conclusion. From: roopoo Date: 21 Jun 00 - 05:01 AM A 10 foot by 12 foot room, "the study", in my approx 110 year old red brick house in a Yorkshire village, and overlooking the main road through the village...and one of the pubs. The computer shares the room with ceiling to floor bookshelves, the central heating boiler, dartboard which is now used as a pin-board, an L-shaped desk (with computer on one bit and partly crammed with my craft work storage boxes on the other - I wish it was L-space too!), and my doughcrafting paraphernalia and worktable. Quite often there is a shaggy black and white sheepdog type sprawled in the doorway, if I'm "doughing", or trying to get round my feet at the desk. We don't just get dust in our computer - it's dog hair and flour too! mouldy |

We added 12' to the main floor, jacked the roof (it was a flat, slanted tar roof)up level, added a second floor and a gable roof. We put two bedrooms, my office such as it is, a bathroom, and a living room on the second floor. It is lofted to the main floor. We started this several years ago. If I ever talk about doing something like this again, I hereby authorize any Mudcatter of at least 6 months seniority to stab me in the eye with an icepick..................LOL. Big Mick |

We started this one over twenty-five years ago, it's really small and we still haven't finished it. We used a lot of salvaged material and your factory stairs put me in mind of our bath tub and some of our doors. They came out of an old Convent, in fact the standard joke here, when we first moved in, was that it was probably the first time that Mother Superior's tub didn't have a virgin in it. |
