Will be in the area this fall and was wondering if anyone knows if Burlington VT has a good folk/acoutic scene going on. Live shows, open mikes anything acoustically connected would be great. Thanks.

The Burlington Coffeehouse has been offering a weekly open mike for years now, although I don't know where the current location is. IME, it is heavily weighted toward the aspiring singer/songwriter. Borders does acoustic music from time to time, as does Barnes and Noble. The weekly newspaper to get is "Seven Days" for schedules. There are a couple of get togethers in the Rutland area, one at a local lounge every Thursday, and one in the Methodist Church on the 1st and 3rd Wed of the month. I am sure there are others, but they're often hard to track down.

There's a bluegrass festival this weekend, June 30-July 2, 2000 in Essex Junction (just outside Burlington) at the Champlain Valley Expo fairgrounds. We've been to it a couple of times, and it's real nice but real far for us.

It's called "Vermont's Bluegrass Family Festival" and will feature J.D. Crowe, Northern Lights, Lonesome River Band, and many others. For information, call [phone] or [e-mail].

The University of Vermont is there, and downtown has a few clubs and trendy little sidewalk cafes, so I expect you'll find some music!

I can't believe none of us mentioned the Champlain Valley Folk Festival, which is one of the finest around. Aug. 4,5 &6 this year, with the usual incredible lineup, including Tom Russell and Finest Kind.

The Burlington Coffee House has a very nice space above the Rhombus Art Gallery. It's just off Church Street, on College. I saw a great concert by Lucy Kaplansky the last time I was there. Just before going to see Lucy, I saw the Highland Weavers playing in an Irish bar across the street.

There are also frequently folk-type concerts in the auditorium at City Hall and at the Flynn Theatre. Sometimes, the larger clubs like the Common Ground in Winooski (about a mile from Burlington) will have performers like Greg Brown.

The Champlain Valley Folk Festival has long been my favorite small festival. I'm really excited about this year's line-up. As bigchuck mentioned, the dates are August 4-6.

I think Doc Watson and Jack Lawrence are going to do another concert at the Flynn sometime around Columbus day weekend.

I don't live in Vermont any more, so I'm not really in touch with what's going on there now, but there used to be several sessions in and around Burlington, and I know there is now a monthly Irish session in downtown Montpelier that Sarah Blair started. Susan A-R plays in a weekly session (I think) in Montpelier too--you might want to leave her a personal message since I don't know how often she's checking in to the Mudcat these days and she might miss this thread. She probably knows more about the current Burlingon scene than I do, too. You could also contact Patrick McCullough at Contracopia ([e-mail])--he puts out a monthly contra dance newsletter and is involved in the folk scene. I bet he'd have some idea of what's going on musically too.

There used to be a lot of music in Burlington, both concert-type stuff at the Burlington Coffeehouse & other venues and sessions. I bet there still is. Good luck!
